This place is amazing. I am glad that I was able to make it here. This was refuge for Minneapolis's favorite son, Prince Rodger Nelson. Here is where he recorded some of his hits, hosted some legendary parties (yes culminating in the serving of pancakes), and even lived for a period of time.
Parking here is free, which is a plus. I took the VIP tour, which was a bit pricey, but I was like what the hell. They have some tight security that will let you know when you are somewhere that you should not be or leaning on a wall.
I visited here while I was on my way to the airport, so I had all of my luggage with me. I was graciously allowed to check my luggage in at the gift shop. They had tags specifically made for that purpose, so that is a regular occurrence there I believe.
They do not allow cell phones on the majority of the. Starting off the tour, they give you the ground rules and then secure your phone in a Yondr pouch so you can not use it.
The tour includes visits to Prince's office, the editing room, recording studios A and B, a room full of his shoes, the Galaxy Room, a kitchen area and rooms themed after certain Prince albums including Sign of the TImes, Diamonds and Pearls, and of course Purple Rain.
The areas are well laid out and very organized. There are a few films that they have you view along the way and there are some interactive activities such as a photo op in studio B, playing on Prince's ping pong table in Studio B, listen to isolated instruments on Prince tacks (When Dove's Cry), listening to unreleased music (Cheesy). They promised that there will be some new Prince music released in the future from his vault. You will find an ample amount of restrooms available along the tour, so don't worry about that.
My tour guide, Margo, was amazingly awesome. She was funny, energetic, respectful, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. She was perfect for the job and I was glad she was my guide. The tour is guided, but after each stop is explained, the guide leaves the visitors to explore the area own their own for a bit.
At the second to last stop on the tour, they free your phones from the Yondr bags and you are free to take pictures and videos for the remaining part of the tour. That second to last stop, begins at the room dedicated to the artist formerly known as Prince's room, just behind the When Doves Cry door. Behind that door you will find a huge concert venue with a bunch of Prince memorabilia including a couple of cars, a bike, a motorcycle, and a couple of pianos. They play a short Prince concert of the screen on the stage. It starts off electric and is really pumping. The place starts off dark, but eventually things settle down and they turn the lights back on.
The tour, which lasted about 2 hours, ends at the NPG club which is where Prince hosted many parties. They have a few lounge chairs and high top tables with chairs there. It is a very cool place with a few photo ops. There is where you will find a snack bar with light snacks and drinks.
Before you exit, you will pass a large rest room area and of course the gift shop. The gift shops has t shirts, vinyl albums, magnets, umbrellas, hats and other memorabilia available to purchase. The entire staff, from the security, to the receptionist, to the gift shop staff and of course the guides are very friendly. They were all awesome. I loved this tour and highly recommend it. It is a must visit while in Minneapolis.
