Pakkhús is exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble upon when road tripping through Iceland. Langoustine is the reason. Just order it. Baked or grilled, it truly doesn’t matter. It’s soft, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth tender, unbelievably fresh, and so flavorful it’s almost ridiculous. After our first visit, we were completely hooked and on this trip, we went twice just for it.
There’s something about sitting in the warm dining room after a long day on the road, eating food that tastes like it was pulled from the sea that morning. Using fresh ingredients from the Vatnajökull region, Pakkhús builds its menu around local seafood, lamb, and fish - you can taste the difference in every bite. We have tried the soup, smoked salmon, duck & pork, tuna steak, Skyr Volcano, and the chocolate brownie, and every single dish was just… so good. Not fussy. Not overcomplicated. Just incredibly fresh and done right.
Some restaurants are good in the moment. Pakkhús is the kind you replay in your head days later. It’s the meal you compare everything else to. Warm and welcoming, there’s a comfort here that goes beyond the food. It feels thoughtful. Intentional. Like every detail matters. And that’s why we keep coming back.
One thing to know: they don’t take reservations, so come early if you want a table. That said, even if there’s a line, the wait isn’t bad — and it’s absolutely worth it.
