How to Visit Lake Como, Italy — Luxury Hotels and Fairy-tale Towns Included

"For a palatial vibe right in the center of Como, Ghachem calls Palace Hotel, run by the Villa d’Este group, one of his favorites. “Cross the road and you're on the water. The hotel is located within walking distance of most restaurants, shopping, and most activities, including the ferry terminal.”" - Travel + Leisure Editors

Located about a 15 minute walk or 7 minute cab ride from the train stations and across the street from the hub of action in on Lake Como, the location can’t be beat. But don’t be fooled by the facade, it’s quite impressive but once your inside is quite ordinary expect the dining room where they serve breakfast which actually matched the outside. As with most hotels in Europe, the rooms are smaller than what North Americans are accustomed to. But they’re clean and comfortable. The staff a friendly and helpful. From a location place, and budget friendly (by Lake Como perspective) you could do a LOT worse, but if you want la dolce vita there are other less convenient, more grand hotels in town.

We recently stayed at his fabulous hotel and can wholeheartedly recommend it. The staff make you feel special and treat you like family - special mention to Diana on the front desk for sorting us out with a room after we had checked out (we got stranded in Como with the thunderstorm and associated flooding and landslides - missed our flight home as a result). The location is perfect for sightseeing around Lake Como and the transfer from both Milan airports take around an hour. I'm more than happy to give the hotel 5 stars...

We stayed four nights at the Palace Hotel. The hotel is old but the rooms and bathrooms have been renovated and are adequate. The lobby area is dated and sparsely furnished but the reception staff were so friendly and welcoming you don’t notice the decor. We requested a lake view room with an unobstructed view and wow it was perfect. I sat at the very large window and watched the boats come and go. We had amazing sunsets every evening. The buffet breakfast was served in a beautiful room and the food selections were bountiful and delicious. The Ceccato bar, located just in front of the main hotel, is the perfect spot for lunch or cocktails. All hotels in Italy seem to have the same bathtubs. They are very deep and very slippery with nothing to hold on to. As a petite woman, it was very difficult to get in and out. Fortunately, we have learned to bring our own tub mat to prevent falling on the slippery surface. A hotel we stayed in another city provided a nice rubber mat and it was greatly appreciated. This hotel is the perfect location for touring the town of Como or taking the not to be missed boat ride.

I booked the Palace Hotel in Como based on the photos and description, but it was a major disappointment. The hotel felt far less grand than advertised. At check-in, there was no valet or bellman to assist with luggage, and the reception area looked sterile and unwelcoming. The elevator to our floor had a strong odor, like damp, decades-old carpet, which set a poor tone right away.||The layout of the hotel was confusing, with inadequate signage to guide guests to the rooms or elevators. Although our room had been recently renovated, it was extremely basic and lacked the charm or amenities one would expect at this price point.||The only positives were the spacious grounds and the convenient location across from the lake and within walking distance to the main square. However, overall, this was one of the least favorable hotel stays we’ve had in all our travels—and certainly not worth the $600+ per night rate.

The hotel was in a central location. The breakfast was great however the rooms were dusty. They need to improve on their cleanliness. The highways were dirty. The dining area was very clean.

The facade and location lure you in, but the inside is just good and doesn’t match the grandeur of outside.|It’s clean, the staff are very good. The rooms are smaller than most North Americans are accustomed to, but are decent sized by European standards.|If you want la dolce vita, there are better options, but The Palace Hotel is, by Lake Como standards, budget friendly and in the best location.

Stayed here for 4 days. Nobody can beat this location. Incredible hotel and its amenities. The staff is super courteous and generous. In fact we had a small health situation during our stay and the reception desk staff were super helpful even at the middle of the night! Thank you 🙏🏼. Loved every bit of it. The breakfast is outstanding and specifically Alberto and his team delivered awesome service. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are planning to be in the middle of Como with easy access to everything.

Google
Hotel is in a good location but the entry hall and interiors are generally very-dated and gloomy, with a disappointing 80's feel for a 4* hotel in the center of Como. Rooms are slightly more modern having been renovated, but the rest of the interiors lets it down. Definitely not a high-end luxury establishment. Breakfast buffet was very good though, and the dining room had more character and style. We will. not return and would not recommend it considering how many options are available in Como.

Yelp
We stayed at the hotel April of 2023 . Unfortunately our belongings kept disappearing from our room. A pair of Prada reading glasses and my husband's apple ear pods. When we checked the location of the EarPods we noticed that they were almost 20 miles from any place we visited while in Como. The hotel management found our property that was taken and distroyed from our room and did not take any responsibility for what had happened.

Yelp
Do t stay at this hotel. The service we were given by the hotel was very poor and I didn't even hear from anyone in the hotel after I checked in. The rooms are not as explained as they showed in photos and on the website. The location of the hotel it says is at the heart of Como. They were right about this, music blasting, busy road right out the back, marina behind. This hotel cuts you short and I recommend not staying here!

Yelp
Stayed here during our recent trip to Lake Como at the end of March. Perfect location across from the lake & staying in room 231 gave us a wonderful lake view. Night time views were the best!! Staff was friendly. Breakfast every morning from 7-10:30a was great, with a wonderful selection of offerings ranging from scrambled eggs, prosciutto, a variety of breads & toast with jams, Italian pastries, cereal, fruit juices, fruits, & a variety of cold cuts, including my favorite...smoked salmon!!! Of course breakfast wouldn't be complete without café, with choice of espresso, latte, or cappuccino. The decor from the reception lobby to the conference rooms like where breakfast was served were super fancy, making me feel as if I was eating back in the Victorian days, with fancy chandeliers & such. Our room was nice, comfy double-twin/king bed & pillows, and a really nice shower with rainfall shower head PLUS a wall wand which came in quite handy on days when I didn't want to wash my hair or get it wet! The water pressure was great & hot water was always plentiful & came quick. There was also a handful of English-speaking channels in the TV, which was nice. And I think it had HDMI hookup if we wanted to watch stuff from our electronics. So why the minus 1 star? Well, it might seem silly but it's my review & my reasoning. 1) I had called one afternoon requesting an ice bag/pack for my sister staying the Jr Suite next to us after she had stubbed her foot in the furniture. That request never was fulfilled. 2) We had bought a bottle of Toscano wine & asked if we could drink it out in their terrace, but we were told the manager probably wouldn't allow it, but rather we would have to do so in our room. At least they provided a cork screw bottle open for us. 3) When we were checking out, they tried to charge us €25 for the unopened/unused bottle of Prosecco that was in our room when we checked in. We had to tell the front desk guy that the bottle was still in the bucket after being asked "why did they put it in your bill then?" Perhaps that's a question to ask your staff, but we didn't touch that bottle the entire 3-4 nights we stayed there. So, pay attention to your bill when checking out!! Yeah, it was a pretty nice hotel, but not sure is stay again. Especially with other locations around the lake. It was a great view, but we paid for that!

Yelp
Very cold AC, staff is outstanding, and rooms are very large and clean. Location overlooks lake. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Super great happy hour drinks and great appetizers. And the sunset and lake views are beautiful!
