On the Grid : Curry Kitchen

"Don’t worry about missing this tucked away storefront on Fulton- your nose will let you know you’re in the right place. Curry Kitchen is a small but mighty Indian restaurant in town. Service is warm, friendly and helpful, and every dish is customized to your preferred spice level. This isn't an Indian restaurant where they'll hold back. Order it spicy, and you'll be sweating at the table into your bottle of Kingfisher. Try all of the things at the daily lunch buffet, and soak it all up with the fresh-baked naan or roti- some of the best in the city." - CreativeMornings Grand Rapids

Not as Good as It Used to Be We visited Palace of India during our recent trip to Michigan, having had a great experience there two years ago. Unfortunately, this time the food and overall experience didn’t live up to our previous visit. Last time, the owners personally took care of our table, and the food was exceptional. This time, while the food wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as great as we remembered. We started with Paneer Tikka and asked our server if we could get Nimbu Pani (lemon water), which isn’t on the menu. At first, he said it wouldn’t be a problem, but after speaking with the cook, he came back and told us they didn’t have lemons. This was confusing since they served lemon slices alongside the Paneer Tikka. It felt like they were making excuses, which didn’t sit well with us. For the main course, we ordered Dal Makhani, Malai Kofta, and Matar Paneer. Out of those, only the Dal Makhani was really good. The other dishes were okay, but nothing special. We also ordered the bread basket, and to finish, we had an order of Gulab Jamun, which was decent. Overall, Palace of India is still a good spot in Grand Rapids, but it’s not as impressive as it was two years ago. The food quality seemed to have dipped, and the service was a bit inconsistent. Hopefully, they can get back to the high standard we experienced during our first visit.

Amazing food! Would definitely come back. Service was good & quick!

Google
I only had an appetizer, paneer barbecued with onions and peppers and a Marsala tea. A perfect and filling lunch with good heat, flavors and portion. Service was attentive and cordial. They were able to answer my questions about finding southern Indian in GR. Guess I’ll need to road trip! Perhaps slightly more attention to updating folders that the receipts come in—they seemed so old and worn and the tables given a new paint job. The brilliant blue napkins were stunning however. I will be back.

Google
Great food! I got the veggie dish with peas and mushrooms in a tomato based sauce; I usually get the aloo Gobi but would highly recommend the latter. My girlfriend got one with shrimp and like many other peoples experience there were only a few shrimp in the entree (although they were pretty large shrimp. We also ordered 2 apps, a beer and nann bread. I was very full when I left and the bill was $58... Pretty standard with my dine in experience at Indian restaurants.

We’ve visited multiple places in Western Michigan and this place offers the best food that we’ve experienced at an Indian restaurant. The service is absolutely absolutely wonderful very attentive and friendly. Had to get the food is hot fresh and the place is clean!

Google
Wow this place is awesome! The best Indian food I’ve had in the state of Michigan. Great prices, great portions, great vibes. Our server was attentive and not pushy. I cannot wait to be hungry again so I can come back.

Khaled Hussain

Google
The servers are horrible, can’t speak English and cheated on food. The lamb biryani had only four piece of meat. The food was old and when I raised the issue with food, they wanted to charge additional for doing the order properly. Food was old and looked like they used the leftovers from other customers.

Google
Thought they were AYCE before heading there. Headed there and the doors to the entrence said “Lunch Buffet 11:00 AM-3PM”. Went in and was told they don’t do buffet. Would be nice of they fixed that preventing people from wasting their time heading there.

Yelp
One of my favorite Indian restaurants ever. Just like my grandmas cooking- highly recommend.

Yelp
What an overall great experience! Service at Palace of India was above and beyond- we were WELL taken care of! There was a nice list of beers to try, which we were happy with. We accidentally ordered way too much naan but it was so good I don't regret it at all. I had the lamb tikka masala and it was the best tikka masala I've ever had! Absolutely amazing. It also made for great leftovers! I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I Got Food Poisoning from Palace of India. My first and only visit to Palace of India ended horribly. The service was decent and I got my water refilled regularly, so that was nice. Everything appeared to be clean, the decor was kind of cute, and they even had the same Indian song play on a loop in the background to add to the aesthetic. For West Michigan this is authentic for an Indian restaurant. Despite the water refills and music, the experience was unenjoyable. The reason would be the hot temperature of the restaurant. On the hottest weekend of the year, this restaurant was a balmy 85 degrees inside with no ventilation. You would think the restaurant owners would want their diners to be comfortable. (Or at the very least want the food to be prepared in a safer temperature.) I guess the servers refilling my ice water was them acknowledging the hot temperature. Or maybe they wanted us to feel like we were actually dining in the hot country of India. After all, that country is closer to the equator than Michigan is. Either way, it was hotter in the restaurant than it was outside which probably played a factor into how the food was prepared. The food itself was not amazing and they charge extra for rice (signs of greediness?). My qualms, however, are not with this restaurant being greedy but are with the after effects of eating the subpar and over priced food. Why? Both myself and my dining partner received food poisoning. Now I have come fill-circle to the heat issue. I am no health inspector, but I'm guessing meat needs to be prepared a special way so it is not rendered poisonous to the individual consuming said food. I started to feel queasy a short time after leaving the restaurant and later that night I puked. The food did not taste amazing going down, and it was rancid coming up the second time. Over all 0/5 stars. I don't think I can leave a 0 star review. I would not recommend. Please enjoy this photo of my toilet because that is where the food ended up.

Yelp
Palace is my favorite Indian restaurant in the GR area. Located downtown, there is lots of street parking around, and the interior is authentically Indian. As a vegetarian, I order this restaurant for delivery quite regularly, but I've also dined in. They offer a limited amount of alcohol, so just know this isn't a hot cocktail spot. I love to get their paneer tiki masala. It's creamy, mild, and has flavorful peppers and onions along with paneer cheese. The portion size is generous and I always have leftovers. Their naan is maybe their ultimate specialty; and truly sets them apart from other Indian cuisine restaurants in the area. The cheese naan is heavenly, extremely decadent. The garlic naan is lighter, and equally delicious. The samosas and vegetable pakora are excellent appetizers to enjoy with friends. I love the different sauces included. Mango lassi is a classic here- especially recommended if you order a spicier meal. *if ordering out, be sure to select a side of rice with your meal. It is not included otherwise.

Yelp
SO AMAZING! Highly highly recommend any of the vegetarian dishes. Best Indian food I have ever had

Yelp
A friend and I recently met for lunch at Palace of India and had a great experience. I hadn't dined in there for quite awhile and had forgotten how nice it is inside. The chairs are high backed and comfortable and the dining area was really clean and very spacious. Our server was super polite and helpful with recommendations. We ordered the kadhai chicken and the paneer makhani, as well as a side of garlic naan and my friend also got some methi paratha. They serve beer and wine which is nice if you'd like a drink with your meal. They used to have a buffet but I didn't see it when we visited in August of 2021. The food was all fresh, hot, and delicious! I liked the paneer makhani with its creamy and savory sauce. I had hoped for a little more paneer, but the sauce was so tasty on its own. I love the fluffy rice that is served with the entrees. The garlic naan was piping hot, garlicky, and charred just enough. Pricing is typical of other Indian restaurants in the area, and this place is pretty close to my house so I will definitely be back!

Yelp
This is my favorite Indian place in town. I've tried many of their dishes and all of them are so flavorful, delicious, and the meat is always tender. I brought several people here who "didn't like Indian food" or were scared to try and they all loved it. There is food for your less adventurous or your Indian food lovers. My favorite things here are the the tandoori chicken on the bone, lamb vindaloo (SO SPICY), chicken pakora, and Rogan Josh. You seriously cannot go wrong with anything you order. The staff is always friendly and the restaurant is always clean. You can usually bring larger groups with no problem and I've never had a wait. If you like Indian food, you must come here.

Yelp
Great choices. Delicious food w balanced spicing. GR Indian favorite. Great service and effective.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite spots in GR for Indian food! We only tried the lamb tikka masala and palak paneer (our favorites) with a side of butter naan, then were asked if we wanted rice. I guess rice is an additional cost and not a part of the meal - which I would have loved to know before opting into it. Or maybe seeing if we could order less since we aren't super huge fans of rice but still like to enjoy it (hence 4 stars instead of 5). But hands down, this restaurant did a great job with my two favorite dishes and the flavor (the lamb was soooo tender - I just wish there were a few more pieces of protein and that there were more pieces of paneer, but the size of each chunk was bigger), the service, and portion sizes were great! We were seated promptly, provided waters and beverages in a timely manner and didn't have to wait too long for our food to arrive. Our waters also never were below half as someone was constantly coming around to make sure that we were taken care of. A wonderful experience for delicious Indian food.

Yelp
Food was ok! But staff was rude! Got the buttered chicken and got a got a full plate of rice. Was spaying and staff demanded card didn't take cash! Will never be ordering from this place again!

Yelp
Absolutely DEE-LISH! I came here later-night with my hubbu and we were taken by surprise with the absolutely delightful spices and smells of the Palace of India! Now I've been to many establishments which offer indian, sri-lankan, indo-chinese inspired dishes and I grew up eating the cuisine, but oddly enough I really like to order Malai Kofta first anytime I visit a new Indian restaurant! I must say I WAS IMPRESSED with the unique take on the flavor of the curry for this dish! It was much sweeter and buttery compared to other local favorites I've had, which tend to be more similar to each other. Palace of India really sticks out! Though the prices here tend to be a bit more than competitors in the same food-genre, the difference is worth paying for with the flavor, portion and quality of the tastes. I will definitely revisit based off the food enjoyed alone, but the ambiance of the restaurant is also quite nice and the staff is attentive and polite. If you need a good place for curries, this is a GREAT place to try! Trust me. :)

Yelp
Great wait staff and speedy service. Food was delicious. We ordered the vegetable samosas, lamb biryani, chicken curry, and garlic naan. Would recommend all of it.

Yelp
Loved the food. Fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. We had the palak paneer and channa masala

Yelp
Once again wish I could give half a star. I was caught between three and four stars for this review, but decided to round up for the convenience and price. Pros: - buffet - fairly cheap for what you get - located in a good area - not too busy Cons: - quality of the food is not the most amazing. Taste wise was okay, but nothing to write home about - dessert section was almost non-existent (only two choices I think, at least the time I went)

Yelp
Customer service was amazing they were super busy that day we went kinda felt rushed but overall food and service was amazing and I'll be back

Yelp
Palace of India packs in just the right amount of flavor and spice. The colors, taste, and portions have me leaving the restaurant full, warm, and happy! If you're new to Indian food, I would recommend the classic combo of either rice or naan with your choice of curry. I personally love chicken tikka masala, but the butter chicken curry at the Palace is exquisite. Something I always order at an Indian restaurant is the Tandoori chicken. I've had bland Tandoori chicken, but luckily Palace of India does it right every time! Dine in or takeout, Palace of India will treat you right. Want something new for dinner? Check it out!!

Yelp
We loved Palace of India! First of all, the food is amazingly delicious! We ordered 2 vegetarian appetizers and 2 vegetarian entrees with plain roti. It's become a favorite spot of ours over the years!

Yelp
The food was amazing, right when I walked in I could tell it was finna be good. The owner was amazing and absolutely a banger and highly recommend. The dinning is great and seating is very nice and good service!

Yelp
This was our first time at the restaurant. Service was quick and it was close to the medical facilities downtown. We hadn't been to this restaurant before and only afterward realized that we weren't asked how spicy we would like our meal.... and ended up getting quite bland food. We stopped by on a visit to a local university and will likely give them another try as we love Indian food and they are open until 10...

Iman T.

Yelp
Food is mediocre! Service is okay. Ambiance not so good! Has a funny smell and extremely hot. Not type of air conditioning provided. Feels like a sauna. Took my food to go. Was not about to eat in a sauna ! Sorry will not be going back!

Yelp
One of the best Indian restaurants in town! Yummy! The food is always whether in person or delivered. I'm a regular and they know me by name!

Yelp
We were very disappointed. We arrived about 5:10 on a Sunday. Our server took quite a while before coming over to greet us. He took our order for wine & appetizers and dinner. He brought out our wine and appetizer about 20 minutes after taking the order. We enjoyed the wine, salad and Appetizer, but after we finished - we waited for our main course, which never came. He did come over and tell us it was coming a couple of times. The last time he told us it would be out within five minutes. This did not happen. We paid for the food and drinks that we enjoyed, but we decided to leave at 7 o'clock. We were there for two hours and did not get dinner. The restaurant was less than half full...so it's not like they were too busy? We did notice others getting their dinners ( even though they arrived after us ?) We'll never eat there again.
google avatar

Hassan S.

Yelp
Been here twice, once for take out and once as a work dinner. The first time we came I thought the food was fine but I couldn't get over that they charge you extra for rice, never seen that at an Indian restaurant, and beyond that the size of rice was suppose to be for two, but we had to skimp on the rice to make it work for two. So I made a point to never come here again but came as a work dinner which work paid for and the saag paneer and other dishes were really good. If you're okay getting hustled for small portions of rice then not a bad option to eat here, if you don't want to pay extra for rice that doesn't feed the amount of people promised then avoid Palace of India.

Saurabhi P.

Yelp
I would highly recommend this place!! They have the best matar paneer I have ever tried. I could eat that and their naan everyday!! Even if you are not a vegetarian please try it. The dal is also great as well as their mutton. The mango Lassi is super creamy and delicious. The staff is also nice. And the place is clean and well maintained.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful little family joint. The service was excellent and food quite delicious. Their vegetable samosa was incredibly tasty (and a bit spicy!). We got to try quite a few things (we went as a larger group): butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, chicken vindaloo, lamb rogan josh, palak paneer, and aloo gobi. All the dishes were quite flavorful and tasty. Their cheese and garlic naan were also well-made. The mango lassi was top notch. All in all, a great meal!

Yelp
This is honestly not my favorite restaurant but it's not terrible either. They are located in a really good spot, so I've been there numerous times, but I'm never blown away by the food. This last experience I had from my delivery order was weird. I didn't know I needed to order rice as extra. Usually entree dishes come with rice automatically at other Indian restaurants, so I didn't think to order rice. I had to make my own rice. The dish (bhindi masala) was fine, but extremely salty...almost unbearably so. I'm just not in love. It's sufficient, but not exemplary Indian food to me.
google avatar

Yelp
Taste is fine. I refused to eat rice but the sever gave me it and charged me. Also, he asked me to try drink. I though it was free but he charged me.

Yelp
We stopped by Palace of India for lunch and were really happy we chose to eat here. There was a lot of variety to decide from, and you could mix/match your favorite sides! The food was flavorful and represented good value for money. Everything is cooked and prepared in front of you in their open kitchen. Our experience at Palace of India was great. Service was fast and efficient, the only thing they are lacking is seating!

Henry P.

Yelp
Great food and a family business they have the nicest kid working the counter and taking your orders. Highly recommend the butter chicken so Tender.

Yelp
I absolutely can not believe it has taken us 6 years of living in Grand Rapids to try Palace!!!!! It was outstanding!!!!!! The food was flavorful and meats were beautifully cooked and tender - spicy vindaloo was actually fairly spicy, we were so happy with the meal - even the kids were digging into the lentils they were just that good - the lamb samosa was extremely generous and packed full of meat - but the vegetable samosa was the appetizer star of the show, just so much flavor - definitely not a bland potato dish. The fam is already planning our next delivery meal :D!!!!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
The butter chicken and chicken korma were amazing, as well as the keema samosa. Rich flavors and beautiful presentation. Very quick and friendly service. This will be my go-to Indian restaurant any time I come to town!

Michaela C.

Yelp
My favorite Indian cuisine in town. They are so hospitable and the food is amazing. I absolutely love the Pudina Chicken Tikka!

Brendan C.

Yelp
I thought they forgot the rice. Turns out rice costs extra?? And you order it separately. The cost of rice is like $0.05/serving and should be included given the price of the whole meal.
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
First time here for me. We went for Sunday lunch buffet. The dinning room was very nice and clean. Everything was very well prepared and none of the meats dry like some buffets can be. The tandoori chicken was perfectly cooked. Fresh naan was brought to the table also. One of the better Indian buffets we have been to.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Sons favorite place to go when we are in Grand Rapids. Everything is so good. And the staff are amazing too
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
They make you pay for rice. Wtf? Every other Indian restaurant has rice come with the entree. It's not like Palace of India charges you less for an entree because it doesn't come with rice. Makes no sense. Food was fine otherwise.
google avatar

Jenn W.

Yelp
After getting the shaft from Gita Pita last night, my delivery options weren't very vast. Luckily Palace of India was open. I think getting my order cancelled from Gita Pita was the best thing that could've happened, the food from Palace was fantastic! Paneer Tikka Masala is my go-to dish and theirs did not disappoint. Really nice portion size and great flavor. Ordered it with garlic naan and it is a great combo. I also ordered the Vegetable Samosas and Keema Samosas. I ordered the Vegetable just in case I didn't like the Keema, but that wasn't necessary. They were both delicious, but I think I preferred the flavor of the Vegetable. Each order comes with two very large Samosas. I'm not sure what the sauces were but I ended up dipping mine in the Tikka Masala sauce......so good!
google avatar

Evan S.

Yelp
There are a few good Indian places in GR but this is my favorite. Mostly because the service is so good and the people are so nice. It is a bit on the expensive side and that's the only negative. I wish the rice came with the main dishes instead of being a separate charge. But it's plenty of food and I'm more than willing to pay for the friendly and expedient service.
google avatar

Tiana T.

Yelp
They do buffet TO-GO! While I have a longer lunch, I don't particularly like the amount of anxiety a sit down restaurant provides. This is also particularly since there are a few comments about They have a great selection and as long as you ask, they will provide naan. You just may have to wait a minute or two. The butter chicken was really good, not life changing but really good. I also really really liked the chicken biryani. It was a great alternative to plain rice that I could just eat by itself. This also offers quite a few quality vegetarian and vegan dishes if you have a mixed crowd.
google avatar

Erica P.

Yelp
Very clean establishment. The food is amazing and authentic. Perfect for a fancy date night. Meals are pricey but portions are big. Definitely enough to split or have leftovers.

LaVelle E.

Yelp
1st time there! Food was great and the staff was friendly. Ordered several different dishes and all were delicious. I didn't try any drinks or tea. I will be coming back again soon. Not large portions. They have a lunch menu and Dinner menu as well.
google avatar

Ivana L.

Yelp
Really great food!! Got the butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. The cheese naan bread was a huge hit here! Best naan bread I've ever had!! I will be back.
google avatar

Chellvie M.

Yelp
I'm thinking Indian my coworker is thinking Asian and then we come to a common ground and say Indian it is. So boom, we end up at Palace of India and we were seated immediately! The food was really tasty! I thoroughly enjoyed how tender the chicken pieces were in the chicken curry! The butter nut chicken was pretty tasty as well, but the curry was my all time favorite. The price for their lunch buffet was so reasonable I had to do a double take when looking at my bill! If you're in the Grand Rapids area and you're looking for good food, give the Palace of India a try. I recommend them! The only con I had was my spoon wasn't clean, it had leftover food on it, but thankfully I didn't need it! Other than that, check them out!
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
Stopped in for the lunch buffet on a Saturday, on the tip that they had lots of vegan options. It was dead around noon, so I didn't have to body-check anyone to get to the buffet. There was a tad to turnip dish, a nice dahl, a deep fried potato (sort of bahji-like) dish, and a sad salad dish (iceberg lettuce and cucumber, with traces of arugula). The turnip and dahl were certainly delicious, but the rest was forgettable. It would have been nice for some more vegetable-heavy dishes, as they were one, other than that crappy salad. For $11, I certainly was full, but I can't recommend it to vegans who might want more variety and more vegetables. Okay spot.

Yelp
As young adults entering fine dining we were treated with over the top service and comfort without even mentioning the food. As new comers of the restaurant we were ima pickle in to which to decide for our satisfaction, letting this know to the server was like reliving anxiety as if they almost had a Palace of India "starter kit". As the food started getting served in less then the parking meter 15 min time, we were excited for dinner on Ekadashi. For low prices and new flavors, the appetizers already wowed our taste buds.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I decided to go out and try a new restaurant last night and chose Palace of India at the recommendation of a friend. It was a very busy night in GR due to it being LaughFest so we went a bit early in preparation for a wait at the restaurant. Upon arriving, we were surprised to find only 2 other tables seated, with the rest of the dining room empty! This was odd with how busy the town was. Nonetheless, we sat down and began browsing the menu. Eventually we decided on what to order. We placed an appetizer order and soon after, our dinner orders of Curry Chicken and Goat Pickle. As we waited for our appetizer, we had a chance to talk and enjoy a bit of time relaxing. After a while, we began to wonder where the appetizer was. About 25 minutes after ordering, the appetizer and our meals were brought out at the same time. This wasn't exactly what we had planned, but it wasn't too bad, as the service for drinks had been good and we did not feel as though we had been forgotten. As for the food, everything was hot and delicious! However, the curry portions were very small for the price, which additionally did not include rice. We ordered a bowl of rice to share but were pressured twice about needing more rice or bread (which would have cost even more). As for the spice level, this is not for the faint of heart! We both enjoy spicy foods and these dishes were quite hot. While they are stated to be customizable in spice, this did not seem to be the actual case. Overall, the experience had some flaws in it. Because of this, it would not be my first choice of Indian food in Grand Rapids.

Yelp
This restuartant food is not that good, Owner isnt friendly and doesnt know how to greet people; horrible experience! We ordered catering for our friend wedding! It turned out to be a nightmare! Owner was so rude!

Yelp
As mentioned in other reviews service is slow. Also inept. Were sat pretty quickly then asked what we'd like to drink before we were even given menus. My dining companions order Mango Lassi and the waitress returned ten minutes later to say they were out of those. Then she brought the menus after we had to request them. We ordered and then waited, and waited, and waited, despite it not being very busy. Dinners finally arrive (before the drinks, which were tea and water!!!) and they get one of the orders wrong. The waitress appears to assert that's what one of us ordered. Nope. No one did. Finally about 15 minutes later the correct order arrived. I had the matar paneer. The peas were rock hard, and over cooked. I ordered medium and got mild. All around disappointing experience.
google avatar

Murali Krishnan N.

Yelp
1 hour delay, low portions, pricy, arrogant staff, and mediocre quality. Reason for low grade service as per the worker, they prefer white people only at the restaurant and unfortunately more Indian showed up due to long weekend. Racist!!! Such a terrible place, please add a tag line that "Indians are not welcome, or come at your own risk with poor service"!!! There were many people leaving after waiting for minutes and not getting attended for seating. I can't believe how this place got such a high rating, there were quite a few people as in my situation who got fallen for the high ratings.

Yelp
Probably one of the most entertaining bar I have ever sat at! The food was honestly mind blowing. They made me feel like family in 5 min of being in the door. Love this place!!
