7 Luxury Trains with Next-Level Dining Cars

"If Europe has the Orient Express, India has the Palace on Wheels. The luxury train, first introduced in 1982 (it got an overhaul in 2017), is, quite literally, a railroad mansion, with decor fit for a maharaja, and a series of services designed to make the journey live up to its high price tag. That includes the cuisine on board. The train’s two restaurants, Maharaja and Maharani, serve up regional Indian dishes in regal surroundings embellished with hand-carved furnishings and colorful wall lamps, intricate floral tapestries, and mahogany paneling. Sumptuously draped curtains and crisp linens add to the royal aesthetic, though both dining cars have panoramic windows on both sides, to ensure you enjoy the breathtaking views with your meal. On the menu, the focus is mostly on Rajasthani specialities given the Palace’s route through the desert state. Offerings change daily but always feature the star ingredients of local cooking: Rich ghee and sweet jowar (sorghum), nutty bajra (pearl millet), and earthy lentils, all rendered in mouth-watering dals and curries. There are plenty of meat choices, too, from mutton saagwala to tandoori chicken. Guests can also expect North Indian and Mughlai classics, as well as continental, Thai, and international options, which are alternated throughout the trip. Can’t take the heat that often comes with Indian food? Fret not. The chefs—some of India’s best—will happily adjust the level of spices and salt to your request. The bottom line though: Everything tastes—and looks—phenomenal. Tickets start around $5,820 per person for an 8-day journey in a deluxe cabin during the low season."

The 23 Best Places to Go in India in 2023

"After a temporary halt due to COVID, two of India’s most luxurious trains are set to return to action. The carriages of Rajasthan’s Palace on Wheels, launched in 1982, once belonged to maharajas and nizams. The eight-day journey starts in Delhi and takes you to all the best sights of Rajasthan, from the palaces of Udaipur and Jaipur to the nature and wildlife of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, before heading to Agra for a glimpse of the iconic Taj Mahal."

Palace on Wheels: A Journey Beyond Expectations If you’re looking for the most luxurious, efficient, and immersive way to experience India’s rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes, Palace on Wheels is an absolute must. Before embarking on this journey, I had an entirely different image of India in my mind, but this trip completely transformed my perspective. From the moment we boarded, we were transported into a world of regal elegance. The Palace on Wheels is not just a train; it’s a moving heritage experience that showcases the best of Northern India in a way that no other mode of travel can. The meticulously planned seven-night itinerary covers destinations that would normally take over 24 days to explore by conventional travel. This efficiency allowed us to maximize our time, soaking in the majestic fortresses, awe-inspiring palaces, intricate stone carvings, and stunning marble sculptures that blend South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Eastern influences. The level of service was truly impeccable, exceeding all expectations. From the owner—who is a royal descendant—to every single staff member, their dedication to hospitality was unmatched. General Manager Sanjay Nischal, along with Bhawani, Ramphool, Ustav, and Jitu, provided top-tier service with incredible knowledge and professionalism. Their attention to detail and commitment to guest satisfaction were beyond impressive. It was clear that they take immense pride in showcasing India’s best culture, history, cuisine, and warmth. Originally, my plan was to visit India briefly, primarily to see the Taj Mahal. However, Palace on Wheels completely changed that plan. The experience was so incredible that my entire group and I are already planning our return to India—this time, with an even longer itinerary. We trust Palace on Wheels to not only deliver but to surpass our expectations, showing us wonders beyond our imagination. This is by far the most well-organized, comfortable, and luxurious way to explore Northern India. If you want to witness the true beauty of India in a seamless and enchanting way, Palace on Wheels is the only way to go. I highly recommend this journey—it’s an experience that will stay with you forever.

We chose the PoW for my birthday trip to India as it covered all the main sights we wanted to see without having long periods travelling in a car/coach. It is an excellent way to travel; each day you wake up at a new destination. We opted for the private tour option to have our own car and guide. The unexpected bonus of this was having our own personal attendant from PoW accompany us on all our excursions. Vishnu provided outstanding service in a multitude of ways - from road crossing to coat carrying and his gentle sense on humour was much appreciated. We missed him sorely on our trip out in Delhi after leaving the train; I had to remember to tell my husband to mind his head on low doors! A shout out to Sohan looking after us in our carriage - cold beers post excursions much appreciated and the balloons in room for my birthday - a lovely touch. The guides for the excisions were all excellent and having the private tour meant we could go at our own pace. The Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary was a highlight for us. The guide there was extremely good at spotting birds at getting his telescope set up for us to have a good view. I have dropped the trip one star for a few things which could be improved upon. Karaoke is not for everyone and should not under any circumstance be compulsory - there are two dinning cars have one for those who would like a quite meal. The food service was patchy and slow at times. Maybe a trolley with the course options coming out together rather that a waiter carrying one option at a time? Our experience was so much improved when King took over looking after us. He was also the best singer at the karaoke. The compulsory shopping stop got a bit tedious; it would have been nice to have been asked what we were potentially interested in buying rather than having to go to set shops. Would have liked to have seen some leather work and enamel jewellery rather than scarves and carpets again. The private tour option paid off as we could bail on the shop when we wanted to go. Overall it was a really enjoyable trip and I would recommend the PoW for the itinerary and the ease of travel.

Forget crowded tourist buses! The Palace on Wheels lets you explore Rajasthan at your own pace, indulging in luxury every step of the way. It’s ‘Royal’ Palace on Wheels !!! Truly a remarkable experience. Right from the Boarding the train until the final departure; “The Royal Era is something we have witnessed”. To begin with the charismatic Mr. Bhawani Singh the jewel of Palace on Wheels, He really ensures that all of the guest on board feels like King, Queen & Prince …And he does it with ease. His Energy, his compassionate & approach is unmatched; you cannot even experience it in a 5 Star Hotel. Because here travelers are not mere guest but they are “Royal Guests” and he proves it. I want to express my gratitude to Mr. Rajkumar, Gajanand ji, and Kunal for their individualized attention during our stay; it has truly improved the experience. His entire team not only works extremely hard but also seamlessly delivers the comfort of a royal experience. The cuisine is served with such delicacies and subtleties as it must have been during the Maharaja's time, thanks to the efforts of Mr. King, the F&B manager, and his chef. And meeting the Honorable Bhagat Singh Lohagarh Sir, the man who conceptualized this entire experience, was the most lovely aspect of the trip. His Energy, his Aura such grounded & humble human being; so much to learn from him. He makes sure that all the guests on board feels like ‘Maharaja’s & Mahrani’s. Thank you is just small word compare the experience that you have all given us. Wishing you more power & success!!

"Traveling with family on the Palace on Wheels was a bonding experience we'll never forget. The spacious cabins were perfect for comfortable family time, while the planned activities kept everyone entertained. The kids loved the elephant ride in Jaipur, the puppet show in Udaipur, and the camel safari in Jaisalmer. A wonderful way to create lasting memories with loved ones!
