7 Luxury Trains with Next-Level Dining Cars

"If Europe has the Orient Express, India has the Palace on Wheels. The luxury train, first introduced in 1982 (it got an overhaul in 2017), is, quite literally, a railroad mansion, with decor fit for a maharaja, and a series of services designed to make the journey live up to its high price tag. That includes the cuisine on board. The train’s two restaurants, Maharaja and Maharani, serve up regional Indian dishes in regal surroundings embellished with hand-carved furnishings and colorful wall lamps, intricate floral tapestries, and mahogany paneling. Sumptuously draped curtains and crisp linens add to the royal aesthetic, though both dining cars have panoramic windows on both sides, to ensure you enjoy the breathtaking views with your meal. On the menu, the focus is mostly on Rajasthani specialities given the Palace’s route through the desert state. Offerings change daily but always feature the star ingredients of local cooking: Rich ghee and sweet jowar (sorghum), nutty bajra (pearl millet), and earthy lentils, all rendered in mouth-watering dals and curries. There are plenty of meat choices, too, from mutton saagwala to tandoori chicken. Guests can also expect North Indian and Mughlai classics, as well as continental, Thai, and international options, which are alternated throughout the trip. Can’t take the heat that often comes with Indian food? Fret not. The chefs—some of India’s best—will happily adjust the level of spices and salt to your request. The bottom line though: Everything tastes—and looks—phenomenal. Tickets start around $5,820 per person for an 8-day journey in a deluxe cabin during the low season."

The 23 Best Places to Go in India in 2023

"After a temporary halt due to COVID, two of India’s most luxurious trains are set to return to action. The carriages of Rajasthan’s Palace on Wheels, launched in 1982, once belonged to maharajas and nizams. The eight-day journey starts in Delhi and takes you to all the best sights of Rajasthan, from the palaces of Udaipur and Jaipur to the nature and wildlife of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, before heading to Agra for a glimpse of the iconic Taj Mahal."

1 luxury tourist train in the world in Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2024. The itinerary is very well‑planned you visit many iconic destinations in Rajasthan and Agra without the hassle of moving hotels or arranging local transport yourself. The food was well-prepared, with a good mix of Indian and continental options. Dining in the elegant restaurant car was a special experience in itself.

Palace on Wheels: A Journey Beyond Expectations If you’re looking for the most luxurious, efficient, and immersive way to experience India’s rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes, Palace on Wheels is an absolute must. Before embarking on this journey, I had an entirely different image of India in my mind, but this trip completely transformed my perspective. From the moment we boarded, we were transported into a world of regal elegance. The Palace on Wheels is not just a train; it’s a moving heritage experience that showcases the best of Northern India in a way that no other mode of travel can. The meticulously planned seven-night itinerary covers destinations that would normally take over 24 days to explore by conventional travel. This efficiency allowed us to maximize our time, soaking in the majestic fortresses, awe-inspiring palaces, intricate stone carvings, and stunning marble sculptures that blend South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Eastern influences. The level of service was truly impeccable, exceeding all expectations. From the owner—who is a royal descendant—to every single staff member, their dedication to hospitality was unmatched. General Manager Sanjay Nischal, along with Bhawani, Ramphool, Ustav, and Jitu, provided top-tier service with incredible knowledge and professionalism. Their attention to detail and commitment to guest satisfaction were beyond impressive. It was clear that they take immense pride in showcasing India’s best culture, history, cuisine, and warmth. Originally, my plan was to visit India briefly, primarily to see the Taj Mahal. However, Palace on Wheels completely changed that plan. The experience was so incredible that my entire group and I are already planning our return to India—this time, with an even longer itinerary. We trust Palace on Wheels to not only deliver but to surpass our expectations, showing us wonders beyond our imagination. This is by far the most well-organized, comfortable, and luxurious way to explore Northern India. If you want to witness the true beauty of India in a seamless and enchanting way, Palace on Wheels is the only way to go. I highly recommend this journey—it’s an experience that will stay with you forever.

We’ve traveled on luxury trains before, but nothing compares to the Palace on Wheels. The charm of its vintage design, the delicately spiced Rajasthani meals served in its ornate dining cars, and the balance of rest and exploration made this journey exceptional. We walked through 17th-century forts by day and returned to our private cabin It’s not just a holiday—it’s a grand, immersive passage through India’s royal heritage.
