Palácio dos Leões

This is also the place where the governor of Sao Luis stays. Ofcourse the tourists are allowed to visit the museum part only. I was shocked to have a guided tour in English. And it was a good one. Lots of interesting pictures at the place.

The official Maranhão state Governor house, where he also works. Originally it was a French Fortress named Saint Louis Fort, where the name of the city started. The museum located inside the building was closed for renovations.

As an English speaking tourist that doesn’t speak Portuguese, it was really nice to have a free tour that explains about the palace but also a little bit about São Luis. Also, I want to pass my thanks to the intern guy who gave the tour. I believe he was the only one who could speak English, we enjoyed his tour and hopefully the Palace can hire him as an employee. I forgot to ask for his name but our conversation was fun and I learned that he likes Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey if that would help to identity him. Brigado!

The “Palace of the Lions” is the Governor’s mansion in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. The location has been the home of this state’s governors since the French ruled in this area back in 1612. The current building was constructed around 1766 & has been reformed several times since then. It’s located in the historic town center, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Parts of the building are open to tourists and they have guided tours. You have to wear booties not to damage the floors & carpets. The guides are pretty knowledgeable and the tour doesn’t take that long, so if you’re in the area, I’d definitely recommend it.

Very informative tour and lovely old building

Free guided visit takes around 30 min. Nice place to fetch water and use a very clean restroom. Do not miss it in your visit to the old town.

Beautiful place to see the sunset. Great scenary to take pictures o to take a coffee with someone that you love.
