The positives: Nestled among the trees, PPR has a calm and relaxing atmosphere despite being quite busy. One of the things I appreciated most was that it didn’t feel geared toward any specific nationality of guests, which created a genuinely welcoming environment for everyone. The rooms are a little dated, but still comfortable and functional. There was a good area to snorkel (which we didn’t utilise so can’t comment on the quality of the reef ) and away from boat traffic.
However, the main downside for us was the food quality. During our stay, we found that the meals here didn’t compare well to those at Palau Royal Resort (PRR). For example, the pizzas which were priced similarly in both places at around $25, were heated-up frozen retail pizzas in PPR, whereas at PRR the dough tasted freshly made and the overall quality was noticeably better. Another advantage of PRR is the wider variety of dining options just outside the resort, which adds welcome flexibility for longer stays.
Another inconvenience is the check-in and check-out times. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and check-out at noon, whereas PRR had the same check out time but offered a more reasonable 2 p.m. check-in.
In terms of the gift shop, we were quoted a different price for an item (which did not have a price tag) than what was keyed into the til at the end - we decided not to argue about it but certainly left a sour taste.
We also found the staff here somewhat distant and less warm than we have experienced in other destinations such as Hawaii, Fiji, and Tonga. The level of hospitality didn’t quite meet expectations - for example, no one assists with luggage upon arrival at the lobby. You will have to unload from the taxi and take it to reception yourself. Another was when our food came and I asked for chilli sauce, the server went on to take orders from other tables, make drinks and serve those tables before coming back to clarify the type of sauce we wanted before heading to the kitchen. Later, I politely ordered milkshake and there was no acknowledgment to the order.
Overall, the hotel has a peaceful setting and comfortable rooms, but the food and service levels leave room for improvements
