Before we arrived we requested a "quiet non-smoking room". When we arrived the much-praised Valentina allocated us a ground floor room looking over the canal at the front of the hotel. Next morning we were woken at 5.30am by a motor delivery boat, very near and noisy, and then by other boats sporadically (making sleep impossible) until we got up at 7.30am. I went to reception and started to say I wanted a room change, but the receptionist knew exactly what I was going to say and finished the sentence for me! We were switched to room 110, overlooking the garden, which was much better. ||This hotel has an enviable location and a flamboyant extrovert decor. We go to Venice every year. At first we used to want a hotel near Piazza San Marco, but that area is heaving. The San Polo area is charming, small shops and cafes, but near the Grand Canal.||We stayed at Palazzetto Madonna several years ago and liked it a lot, though it was quite expensive. It has gone downhill since then. The fabric is not as well maintained as you would expect for a 4* hotel (see photo of our bathroom). It is difficult to make oneself understood by the breakfast staff, they are bossy, young and inexperienced, difficult to get their attention even if you get up and stand outside the kitchen door, and the food ordered may take 20 minutes to arrive, even if they are not particularly busy.||I would say the hotel was once 4*, but these days is more of an expensive 3* in an enviable location.
