The lobby’s polychrome windows with leaded glass look out onto the canal, where the hotel’s private dock is situated. Palazzo Abadessa, Venice, Italy - Explore & Book

"Step back in time. Surrounded by gorgeous antiques, paintings, superb authentic ceilings, damask walls and marquetry floors, you'll feel like an honoured guest of a historic Venetian family as you're warmly welcomed by the palazzo's charming staff.Tucked away down the snug Calle Priuli alleyway, in the bohemian Cannaregio quarter, fronted by a secret walled garden, this was the private mansion of the Priuli family of Doges, and dates to the late 16th-century. The Rossis bought it in 1975 as their home and, after a quarter century of loving restoration - seeking out the perfect period detail, the finest pieces of furniture - opened it as an intimate hotel. Marisa (as she is known) grew up in a Palladian villa "surrounded by beautiful history", then ran several factories in Vicenza, inviting clients to the Abadessa (the 'Mother Superior') for weekend breaks. Now she, and her son Simone, love welcoming cultured folk from all over the world to stay in their elegant palazzo hotel. Highs The location: beside a quiet canal, with the option of coming and going by private water taxi from the palace’s own red-carpeted jetty, only a 15-minute walk from the airport waterbus, and 3 minutes to the Ca'D'Oro vaporetto stopThe huge ground floor ballroom with tall stained glass windows to the jetty; and the equally grand 'piano nobile' above, connected by a unique horseshoe staircaseThe sumptuous bedrooms, with authentic 17th-century frescoes, 18th-century furniture, silk-lined walls and massive Murano-glass chandeliersNothing is too much trouble for the staff, as we reaffirmed on a recent visitThe large walled garden where you can enjoy breakfast Lows Breakfast is the only in-house meal, though they can order in for parties and conferencesThe property focuses squarely on its heritage, some will prefer more contemporary surroundingsSome of the rooms are small and low-ceilingedOnly a few of the rooms have bathtubs, though all have ensuite showers" - Cathy Teesdale

My husband and I enjoyed a 4 night stay in the Deluxe Vista Giardino room. It was a delightful treat to be considered "one of the family" by the ebullient front desk clerk Gaston upon our check in. And we truly felt like family during our visit. We arrived early and easily from the airport on the Vaparetto to the Fondemente Nove stop. The Hotel was in a sweet neighborhood right off the bustling Strada Nova. Gaston had our room cleaned as quickly as possible for us and we were able to check in literally as the staff finished the last touches. Every question we had was answered kindly and thoughtfully. The room was exactly as pictured and clean and very comfortable. It was cleaned daily and the ambience of the entire hotel felt like we were back in time during the merchant of Venice. Breakfast was home made and lovely, with fresh latte's upon request. The evening desk clerk Fernando was also very helpful and made a great recommendation to visit the restaurants and bars on Fondamenta Dei Ormesini. The atmosphere there in the evening was lively and warm with really great cicchetti (small bites of food that you traditionally order with a glass of wine). It was walkable to the Jewish quarter - I recommend doing the tour, if you are into Venetian history, wether you are Jewish or not (I am not)- and the Basilica San Marco and Doge's Palace. The palazzo was a perfect place to have as a central "home away from home" and to experience all the great feels of Venice.

This is an ancient building with all the comforts of a 4-5 stars. Service is decent and breakfast satisfying. The best rooms are on the second floor so book in advance. The location is great, just 15 minutes walk to Rialto bridge and 20 minutes to San Marco square. The garden is wonderful and a true piece of history. If Venice is your destination, try this hotel.

Wonderful stay at the Palazzo Abadessa I stayed at the Palazzo Abadessa Hotel with my children, and we had a fantastic time. My children were especially happy – the entire staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and polite. They made us feel truly welcome. The hotel's location is also perfect: very central and ideal for exploring the city. We would return anytime and highly recommend the hotel!

Be careful with this place. They will offer you “free upgrade” at check in then try to charge you next day. Saw it happen to two others arguing at check in then tried to sneak it on us by saying it would be easier to carry bags there (they didn’t help us carry bags up the stairs in an attempt to sell) Rooms are tiny and AC / Wifi doesn’t work. Breakfast is gross. Staff tried to collect city tax three times even though I showed I paid. Better options all around for the price.

Charming old hotel with lots of “typical Italian” decorations. Great if you want to really go for that look aesthetically! The manager was literally so wonderful that it made me leave this review. Would recommend based on his personality alone.

I know this is very subjective and many would not agree, but this is how I imagine a quality hotel. It had friendliest staff as we were there and the historical palace is just magical. You can touch history here... Wait until you discover the garden! Yes, the green and very quiet garden was the suprise of the year that I did not expect in Venice. The hotel is away from the busy street yet you can reach Rialto quickly. Breakfast was great. Loved the interior!

This was our first trip to Venice made even more wonderful by our stay at Palazzo Abadessa. I could cite the superb location, a haven of peace and tranquility, yet only 100m from the main thoroughfare and Grand Canal; the elegant tasteful interior, lobby and rooms; the serene peaceful garden where we enjoyed breakfast and drinks throughout the day and evening; the generous and tasty breakfasts; but more important than all this, all true nevertheless, was the unwavering attentiveness and politeness of the staff. I simply cannot fault their wonderful welcome and care. Thank you to all. Stuart & Sue

Yelp
This small but quaint 16th-century-mansion-turned-hotel is a nice place to stay when visiting Venice. The rooms are nice, the bathroom is quite roomy, and the hotel dining room is extraordinarily elegant. On the downside, if you're visiting in June or July, the air conditioner struggles mightily to combat the humidity of a Venetian summer day. At breakfast, there was no silverware and I looked pretty strange eating my cereal like a cat. Nor did any employees bother to ask if I any diners needed silverware. But the breakfast was impressive. If you arrive at the airport late, as we did, it's an arduous half-mile walk with suitcases from the motorboat stop to the hotel, so be prepared. The directions posted to their website are extremely confusing. But of course, Venice is a maze. Try these instead. 1) At the airport, follow the signs for Water Transport. 2) Arriving at the airport dock at the bottom of the escalator, head for dock 12 and buy tickets at the nearby window for the Alilguna motorboat (15 Euro each). 3) Get off at the first stop (Fondamenta Nuove) even when the ticket sellers tell you erroneously to disembark at the second stop. 4) Take the Salizzada degli Specchieri and proceed straight ahead, passing through the courtyard known as Campo dei Gesuiti. 5) At the end of the courtyard, do not cross the bridge but instead, make a right on the unmarked street which is actually Fondamenta Zen. 6) Walk about 30 meters (100 feet) and take a left on the bridge (even though the hotel website says "pass" the bridge). 7) Cross the bridge and stay straight on Calle Zanardi and Ruga dei due Pozzi (although you'll jog to the left once) and walk until the path ends at a wall. 8) Take a right on Fondamenta Priuli and then make an immediate left over the bridge. You'll see the stained glass of the hotel and the sign soon after.

Yelp
I mean, how often can you say you spent the night in a 16th-century palace! Found this gem on Expedia, offering a sweet deal for a weekend in October. My two priorities when booking a hotel in Venice: price and distance to the vaporetto station. This hotel checked both of those boxes. From the Ca' d' Oro vaporetto station, you walk a short distance to the Stada Nova, which is a busy street, filled with great shopping and restaurants. From there, you head down one of the narrow alleyways, a couple of turns and bam, you're there! It's SUPER convenient! It happened to be sprinkling most of the time we were there, so it was great to be able to access the vaporetto and shops so quickly! It's also walking distance to the Fondamente Nuova station, so it's easy to catch the vaporetto to Murano and Burano! As you enter the hotel from the walkway, you're welcomed by a charming garden area and the entrance to the lobby. Inside, Murano glass chandeliers and period decor take you back in time. The staff was awesome! Check in wasn't until later in the afternoon, but they held our bags as we went off to explore. The room itself was a bit small, but really, who cares when you're out and about anyway. I had booked us a special package, so we were greeted with a bottle of cold prosecco when we arrived! Perfect way to start the trip! Loved everything about this place; truly a unique experience. The road adjacent to our window did get a bit noisy at one point in the night and the room was a little stuffy, but overall, it was a great stay. You really can't beat the location, price and service :) Grazie mille!
