30 of the World's Most Spectacular Spirals

"Hidden in the center of Venice, unknown to most tourists, is a spiraling “snail” staircase that winds up the tower-like facade of a historic palazzo. It was so unique at the time it was built at the very end of the 15th century that it’s responsible for naming both the palace it’s attached to and the entire branch of the Contarini noble family that lived there. Secluded in the middle of the sestiere of San Marco, the palazzo’s crowning feature is the large interior flight of winding stairs that spirals up into the sky, named the Scala Contarini del Bovolo. “Del Bovolo” translates to “of the snail” in the Venetian dialect, referring to the spiral shape of the scala (staircase). The winding tower was so popular, the “bovolo” name became forever attached to not only the palace but also the Contarini family, one of the founding families of Venice, who had the spiraling facade built to showcase their great wealth. Though it’s not far from the Campo Manin, the staircase can be quite difficult to find. It’s located on a small backstreet that requires navigating Venice’s notorious maze of narrow alleyways. It is worth the effort. The scala with its attached arcades spirals 90 feet high, combining elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Byzantine styles. Visitors can climb to the top of its 80 steps, from which there is a beautiful view over the rooftops of the city.  The architectural gem is depicted in Jacopo de Barbari’s famous bird’s eye view of Venice, painted in 1500 (now held at the Museo Correr). The storybook staircase also made a prominent appearance in Orson Welles’ 1952 adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The gondola is one of the most iconic symbols of Venice, offering a timeless way to experience the city's enchanting canals. Traditionally handcrafted from wood and painted black, these elegant, flat-bottomed boats have been used for centuries as a primary means of transport through Venice’s narrow waterways. Gondoliers, often dressed in striped shirts and straw hats, expertly navigate the labyrinth of canals with a single oar, sharing stories or singing as they go. While no longer essential for daily commuting, gondolas remain a cherished part of Venetian culture and are popular among tourists seeking a romantic and scenic ride through this unique floating city.

It was one of our main stops in Venice, and I would say this is a hidden gem of the city. The entrance costs €9 per person, and €7 is the reduced price for people under 26. I believe the view from the top is definitely worth the price.

Hidden away off some narrow lanes, you'll find this little gem. It is quite spectacular with a small but neat garden at the front. Spiral staircase takes you to the top where you will have some nice views of the skyline. It's not so high and is surrounded by other buildings so don't expect to see sweeping views but it's nice nevertheless.

Our first afternoon in Venice, my wife took me to this gorgeous place. The gates were locked. Years later, my cousin brought me here and the gates were open. We walked to the top and enjoyed the view across many terracotta tiled roofs to the domes of the Basilica di San Marco and the Torre dell'Orologio/Clock Tower. We looked down, too!

A hidden architectural gem tucked away in a quiet corner of Venice. Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is famous for its elegant spiral staircase—the “Bovolo,” or snail shell—and offers one of the most unique views of the city. Climbing to the top is a peaceful escape from the crowds, and the panoramic rooftop view is absolutely worth it. Beautiful, photogenic, and full of quiet charm—perfect for those looking to discover a lesser-known side of Venice.

A cheaper way and without queues to look at the Venice from above than tower in San Marco square. Although the tower is not so high and might dissapoint some people. There is also a gallery inside which visit is included in the price.

One of our favourite spots to visit in Venice and it was quite nicely tucked away from the crowds. The stairs are really easy to climb and the view is pretty nice but you don’t see any water if that’s what you’re looking for. There’s an exhibition attached to the ticket next door but we much pretty much saw everything in a few mins as it’s not very big but details some history of the building and restoration. We had to wait 10mins as we arrived a little early and the QR code is activated by your time slot. There was no need to queue and it was nice to wait on the bench in the shade.

We felt the history climbing the stairs and enjoying the view. It is a short but fun experience.
