30 of the World's Most Spectacular Spirals

"Hidden in the center of Venice, unknown to most tourists, is a spiraling “snail” staircase that winds up the tower-like facade of a historic palazzo. It was so unique at the time it was built at the very end of the 15th century that it’s responsible for naming both the palace it’s attached to and the entire branch of the Contarini noble family that lived there. Secluded in the middle of the sestiere of San Marco, the palazzo’s crowning feature is the large interior flight of winding stairs that spirals up into the sky, named the Scala Contarini del Bovolo. “Del Bovolo” translates to “of the snail” in the Venetian dialect, referring to the spiral shape of the scala (staircase). The winding tower was so popular, the “bovolo” name became forever attached to not only the palace but also the Contarini family, one of the founding families of Venice, who had the spiraling facade built to showcase their great wealth. Though it’s not far from the Campo Manin, the staircase can be quite difficult to find. It’s located on a small backstreet that requires navigating Venice’s notorious maze of narrow alleyways. It is worth the effort. The scala with its attached arcades spirals 90 feet high, combining elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Byzantine styles. Visitors can climb to the top of its 80 steps, from which there is a beautiful view over the rooftops of the city.  The architectural gem is depicted in Jacopo de Barbari’s famous bird’s eye view of Venice, painted in 1500 (now held at the Museo Correr). The storybook staircase also made a prominent appearance in Orson Welles’ 1952 adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

🏛️ Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, Venice The views from Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo are absolutely breathtaking — you really have to embrace the climb to experience them! The spiral staircase is stunning and unique, and it’s definitely something worth doing while in Venice. A small but unforgettable highlight of the city. There are no nearby facilities, nor no toilet facilities that are available on site for the public either. So we had to make our visit pretty quick. Would definitely recommend a quick w'e break before climbing or visiting here. So you can embrace the beauty of it all. I

we thought it was just a building- theres a gorgeous FASHION museum up there. we spent a while with the amazing worker named Mary. she was kind, helpful, friendly and talkative. she helped us through the exhibits, telling us about each thing. usually i wouldn’t need a guide, but she truly showed us the magic behind each piece!!

Its cool. Its in a very unassuming tight location. We didn't bother paying and climbing so we stood outside the tall black chain link fence and got as good of pictures as possible. 10mins (plus the anytime awesome walk to and from) to see it. Then you can say you saw that old twisting tower from the Rick Steves Venice 🇮🇹 video.

7 euros for climbing the tower but absolutely worth it! Might look high but can be climbed within 10 minutes. Stairs are in a spiral.

It was ok. You can get some views of the city and there was a small exhibition. If you only took a photo from the ground looking up you won’t have missed much.

Very photogenic spiral staircase linking two parts of an ancient palazzo- not too bad a climb and great views from the top. Tucked away down a tiny alleyway just off the main drag - you wouldn’t know it was there unless you were looking for it! Beautifully lit up at night

The gondola is one of the most iconic symbols of Venice, offering a timeless way to experience the city's enchanting canals. Traditionally handcrafted from wood and painted black, these elegant, flat-bottomed boats have been used for centuries as a primary means of transport through Venice’s narrow waterways. Gondoliers, often dressed in striped shirts and straw hats, expertly navigate the labyrinth of canals with a single oar, sharing stories or singing as they go. While no longer essential for daily commuting, gondolas remain a cherished part of Venetian culture and are popular among tourists seeking a romantic and scenic ride through this unique floating city.
