How to Visit Matera, Italy

"Set in a 20-room property that mixes old and new, the hotel pairs contemporary furnishings with treasured antiques; I’d relax in the oversized suites, head to the rooftop for a drink with a spectacular view, or book a massage at the underground spa." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Palazzo Gattini Luxury Hotel (Matera, Basilicata) 9 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Practically everything in Italy is old. But there’s old like the Sistine Chapel, and then there’s old like the ancient cave dwellings in the southern village of Matera: dating from around 9,000 years ago, they’re quite possibly the earliest human settlement on the peninsula. Carved into the volcanic hillsides, the Sassi of Matera are the main attraction here — so it makes sense that the best hotels in town incorporate some of that native stone right into the architecture." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel is steeped in history. Built in the 15th century and in the family until the early 1900’s. Went into disrepair until a man purchased and did a remodel that is STUNNING. The staff were amazing. They were so friendly and helpful.||Location, location, location. Couldn’t ask for better. Their rooftop bar had a commanding view of the Sassi and old town.||Breakfast was very good as well!!

Fabulous luxury hotel. Terrific location. Room 210 has a large patio with a defensive turret in the corner, a private outdoor spa, and a fantastic view of the sassi. The view is the same as the hotel bar. Easy parking outside of the historic area in a parking garage with coordinated hotel transport.

Watch out - Make sure, you have to have a confirmed room facing the valley, with sun and light. The so called 'junior suites' facing the cathedral are dark, lugubrious and not worth the money, sorry! The staff tried with arguments that in this boutique hotel "all rooms are different"... no kidding, our traveling companions got a 'junior suite' with a view, light, sunrise and sunset + terrace and plunge pool... The 'junior suite' that was given to us had an air of "being used". It is nice with staff that are service minded, but in this case it turned out to be to the point of silly in their efforts to be friendly.... no thanks, it is unnecessary!

Absolutely unacceptable for a five-star hotel. When the bill arrived, it already included a 15% “optional” service charge — printed in black and white, as if mandatory. The waitress immediately told me with a smile that it was “optional” and that she could go back and redo the bill without it… as if this little charade were perfectly normal. That is not optional, that is pressure. I actually felt forced into it — and I almost let myself go along, just to avoid the awkwardness. This is not hospitality, it’s manipulation. This is Italy, not the US. Tips are voluntary. Forcing them on guests and then pretending to offer a way out is both rude and insulting. For the first time ever, I refused to leave any tip at all — not out of stinginess, but because I refuse to reward such dishonest behavior. A five-star hotel should make you feel welcome, not tricked. Instead, I walked away with disappointment and mistrust. I hope other guests will speak up, because only by sharing these experiences can such practices stop

This hotel far exceeded expectations. Our suite was 304; it was large, beautiful, with a balcony overlooking the caves/ravine and a huge soaking tub. The staff were so helpful and friendly, and the food at breakfast and dinner delicious. They gave us recommendations for other restaurants which were also great. It is in a wonderful location within the old town (no cars), but they have a parking area about 20min outside the city and send a van for pickup. We would highly recomment Matera - it is a very interesting, walkable (slippery cobbles in the rain), historic town and there is a nice hike down to the ravine and up to the caves. We had a guide for the town - arranged through the information center; she was very knowledgable, helpful and fluent. The town is much less touristy than other places in Puglia; I'm glad we spent three nights there.

Google
Outstanding hotel with staff that go above and beyond, you will not be disappointed if you stay here, rooms are clean and bright, the public areas smell fantastic and the staff are at another level and I have stayed in may hotels for both work and holidays! Nico from the restaurant came to my aid, sorting me out post knee op after over enjoying the history of the town. Thank you again!!
