Palazzo Guglielmo, Vignacastrisi, Puglia, southern Italy - Explore & Book

"Facing an impressively fortified church, Palazzo Guglielmo occupies Vignacastrisi’s former mayoral mansion. Its huge wooden doors open onto the small town’s main piazza and harbour a wonderful secret: a rambling, high-ceilinged palace, complete with a vast orange grove and a courtyard garden that’s shaded by tangled fruit trees and dotted with outdoor sofas. Friendly and helpful owner Mauro has converted the house into a very special hotel, with stylish rooms and 3 self-catering hideaways and a wonderfully laid-back feel. It’s ideal not only for couples but for families too, and even those with young children will feel at ease here. The pool is flanked by orange trees, sunflowers, birds-of-paradise, mint and lavender, all wafting scent over the water as you swim. There are elegant salons, a roof terrace with a bubbling hot tub, and plenty of nooks where you can lose yourself in a holiday read. Delicious local produce is served up at lunch, dinner and the plentiful breakfast buffet, and there’s a choice of restaurants within walking distance. Make use of the free bikes and potter around Puglia’s rolling landscapes, or head to the dramatic seacliffs and turquoise waters of the Salentine coast, just 3km away. Highs A wonderful secret-garden feel; you’ll think you’ve stumbled across a long-lost treasurePretty Vignacastrisi, with its unspoilt, stuck-in-time ambiance, is ideally placed for exploring the Salento peninsula, yet well away from crowded resort towns such as Otranto There are regular cooking classes, wine tastings and poolside barbecues - ideal for foodiesSpacious rooms, all with bathtubs, and many with beautiful arched ceilings and sitting roomsA warm welcome combined with fantastic attention to detail (homemade cakes at breakfast, stacks of books on the area, carefully chosen antiques) Lows With only 10 sunbeds to lounge on, there isn't enough space for everyone by the pool when the hotel is full (their delightful sister property Palazzo Circolone in nearby Poggiardo has a more spacious pool setup)The local coastline is rocky; you’ll have to head towards Otranto (30km away) for sandy beaches, though you can swim nearbyThe roads down to the hotel's car park are very narrow. Some guests prefer to park near the square insteadNo in-room TVs - a conscious decision to avoid disturbing the tranquillity (but there is in-room WiFi)It can take a little while for the water in the bathrooms to heat up" - Abigail Blasi

We stayed in a spacious suite called Fante, located in the courtyard of the property. The suite consisted of a sitting room, a separate bedroom, and a large bathroom with a toilet, shower, and jacuzzi. The mattress was quite firm – ideal for some – but if you prefer a softer bed, it’s best to ask for an extra topper. There was also a wardrobe, minibar, and good Wi-Fi.|A definite highlight was the private outdoor seating area, perfect for quietly reading a book or enjoying a drink.||Each morning, we enjoyed a generous breakfast on the terrace with fresh products – a great way to start the day.|A nice extra: you can help yourself to drinks and snacks 24/7 and just write down what you took – very relaxed and trusting!||Outside, there’s a whirlpool by the pool and plenty of sun loungers around it. The large garden is beautifully landscaped, with cosy spots to sit and unwind.||The hotel also has a spa area with a small jacuzzi and a steam room. As a guest, you can use it for 45 minutes free of charge. Unfortunately, during our stay, the jacuzzi wasn’t working – which was a shame.||Free bikes are available, which is handy since there’s not a lot to do in the immediate area. You can also rent two electric bikes, but be sure to check the batteries beforehand – one of ours died after just 20 km.||Pool towels are provided, and beach towels can be rented.||We found the BBQ night less successful: the food was served too quickly, which made it feel rushed. The meat was a bit dry and got cold fast. We also didn’t enjoy the dessert (tiramisu).|On the other hand, the pizzeria within walking distance is a real gem! It was very busy – always a good sign – and even the locals eat there.||Parking is free on the square in front (usually with plenty of space), or on a private spot at the back. The latter is accessed via a narrow alley, and the exit is even narrower – something to be aware of if you have a larger car.|The location of the Palazzo is very peaceful – ideal for anyone looking for relaxation and quiet.||In short: a lovely place for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle, with lots of comfort and genuine hospitality.

Our stay at Palazzo Guglielmo was absolutely outstanding. The hotel, room, facilities, location, food and amenities were first class - totally faultless. However, what stood out the most was the wonderful, attentive and warm hotel staff. They were truly incredible. They went out of their way to book activities for us, organise taxi's and even drove us themselves to where we needed to go when a taxi was unavailable. The facilities were gorgeous - especially the pool and the spa. The pasta making class was amazing, the pizza night was stunning and the wine tasting and boat tour they booked for us was just perfect. We can't wait to return year after year. Excellent value for money - no hidden costs, which meant we could fully relax and enjoy our stay. You can really tell how much they care about the customer experience. A truly wonderful experience. Thank you!

A wonderful place, we returned ten years after our first visit on honeymoon and it has got even better. The hotel sits in a typical southern village behind a large wooden door which opens up to beautiful gardens. Our room Ria was spacious with a lovely sitting area to the front. ||Breakfast is an informal but tasty buffet with a mix of foods including amazing homemade cakes. We tried the pasta making course amazing value only €5 and enjoy it cooked for just €10 with plenty more food. The pizza and BBQ evenings were lovely. A free spa pool and steam room adds to the experience. ||The magic of this place is it's wonderful relaxed and laid back pace, lovely pool and warm friendly staff (and excellent value minibar!). We will be back.

The hotel is set in a beautiful and peaceful Italian garden. The rooms, are clean and well kept. Staff are lovely and very friendly. Would highly recommend the pasta making course. Breakfast is made freshly everyday and we enjoyed the cakes Rosa’s baked. We had a fantastic stay and would definitely return.

We love Palazzo Guglielmo and that's why we keep coming back. Our latest visit was the first for a few years and everything is as good as it ever was. Mauro and his wonderful team manage to create a super-relaxed atmosphere: luxurious and informal, with attention paid to every detail. The hotel itself and the garden and pool are stunning. The breakfasts are amazing. This area of Salento is wonderful - beautiful towns, lovely coastline and warm, clear sea.|If in any doubt, don't hesitate, just go.

What a magical place. We had a wonderful time. The Palazzo is so dreamy with it's beautiful gardens and laid back approach. It felt like we were guests at a friend's house. All the guests were super friendly and the place was great for children. It was enclosed and great space for the kids to run around and make friends.

Lovely stay in a sleepy town. Staff incredibly helpful and wish we stayed longer! Rooms are huge and it has a massive garden. A gym, spa and pool. Free to take bikes for the beach. Everything we wanted being away from a big city to unwind!

This hotel was so awesome. Located in a really cute town close to the water (30 minutes from Otranto and 40 minutes from Lecce). The grounds are genuinely stunning and the room was really nice. Great amenities too - be sure to do the free spa experience! The staff are fantastic and they plan themed dinners a few nights/week. We wish we’d had more time here!
