As the name suggests, the Palazio Il Caveliere is an example of a old mansion turned into a quaint B&B with historic character – not uncommon in Sicily. In this case the family still lives in the Palazio and rents out about half of it to travelers. My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in mid-September, ‘17 while we explored the Baroque gems of the area. It was a very comfortable place to use as a base. It is located at the northern part of Via Umberto the main street through the town. It is a 15-minute walk to the central area, with several restaurants and shops along the way. The hotel offers no parking of its own, but generally it is possible to find a non-pay spot somewhere along the street. ||||Due to a mix-up in our reservation, the first night we were put in the deluxe suite instead of the more standard room we had booked – the suite was a huge classic room with beautiful painted ceiling and decorated with family antiques. It had a picturesque view of St, George cathedral higher on the hillside opposite the hotel. The bathroom was likewise large and attractive, though the retrofit shower was a bit small. The next two nights we were in room 3, a smaller room on the same floor which overlooked the central courtyard. This was still very nice, attractively decorated with a comfortable king bed, two night stands, a desk with mini-fridge, and a recessed armoire (no safe), and a large bathroom with shower only. The a.c. was quiet and effective, and the wifi was strong and fairly fast. ||||Both rooms were on the upper floor of the palazio and required transporting luggage up the stairs because there was no lift. There were other rooms a half-flight down, but at least one of these had no exterior windows, In fact, since each room in the Palazio is different and some may be windowless, we suggest you enquire before booking as to your room’s features.||||Breakfast was served in the Palazio’s central room, which was a delight with high painted ceiling, antique furnishings, family portraits on the wall, and an excellent view of St. George Cathedral. The offerings were extensive and quite good – fruit, yogurt, pastries, meat & cheese, cereals, coffee.||||We enjoyed our stay here very much and recommend it to those who like smaller, more interesting hotels.
