We had two days in Matera and saw many cave houses, cave churches, cave museums. On the second afternoon we opted for this museum of mainly paintings. We enjoyed it a lot. The art was beautiful and the building itself beautiful too with good views. A good contrast to the stone and caves on the surrounding area.

Stunning building inside and out, with a stellar collection of paintings, including many by Carlo Levi. They alone are worth the price of a ticket.

There are some interesting things on display here but we found it quite difficult to find our way around the exhibits abdominal explanations are not always easy to find. The building itself is light and airy and pleasant to walk around. On the day that we visited, newly weds were having their photos taken abdominal it mams a good setting. The exterior is interesting too.

One of the must-visit museums in the area. The first and third floors are temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, and the second floor exhibits a collection of altarpieces, portraits and Matera local landscape paintings. The great thing is that the access is free for art students. Next to the museum is a good spot to shoot night views of sassi.

Beautiful collection. Upstairs, the colourblock rooms make the paintings even more enjoyable and downstairs the Carlo Levi collection is superb. The building itself is also very pretty, with great views.

Palazzo Lanfranchi is a beautiful historic building in Matera and represents the most important expression of seventeenth-century architecture in the city. Originally used as a seminary, Palazzo Lanfranchi was built in 1668 at the behest of Bishop Vincenzo Lanfranchi, according to Tridentine dictates. The construction project of the building was entrusted to the friar Francesco da Copertino who, in 1672, completed the complex also incorporating pre-existing structures, still today an integral part of the scenographic facade of the building. Palazzo Lanfranchi today houses the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata, inaugurated in 2003. Together with the Ridola Museum, it is one of the branches of the National Museum of Matera.
