Hotel al Sole was a very pleasant stay for our first time in Venice. Make sure you get good directions how to get there. Even though it is not far from the train station, it's easy to make a wrong turn as a lot of the Venice streets and alleyways look alike.
From the moment we entered the hotel, Gabriella greeted us kindly and was very professional. She got us checked in and gave our room key, which was an actual key not a card. The giant key added to the old world theme that we found at Hotel al Sole. Keep that in mind if you prefer new and modern. You won't find that here. The room continued this motif with what I assume to be original architecture (columns) in the walls. The bathroom did not have a bidet much to our surprise as every other hotel we stayed in in Europe had one. Depending on where you're from, this may or may not be a problem. Unfortunately, our room did not have a good view. Our room (Classic Twin style in the back of the first floor) overlooked what appeared to be a storage area and was very unappealing (Room 118). Despite the view, the location of the room was nice as there was an outside staircase at the end of our little hallway that lead right to the courtyard and to the front lobby.
We did not go into the dining area in the evening, but we were able to make breakfast. It was pretty basic. Hard boiled eggs, meat, fruit, juice, coffee. Nothing too exciting.
As I stated earlier, the front desk staff was very polite. Gabriella was very helpful and even booked a reservation at a nearby restaurant where we received a free drink for staying at Hotel al Sole. Also, Riccardo at the front desk was quick to recommend places to go and popular places to hang out.
All in all, not a bad place to stay. Again, it has a very old style feel to it, but is a pretty affordable stay in Venice and close to the train station.
