Palazzo San Giovanni Amalfi Coast

This hotel offers a great view in a quiet area some distance away from the crowds in Amalfi. The room was very big and clean but we were unlucky with the location, next to the breakfast area so very noisy in the morning. Breakfast was good but needs a few more options. The yogurt and the peaches tasted delicious! You can certenly eat the breakfast with a view here. The internet has not gotten better like some reviewers had hoped for. Wifi is very slow or barely working. Cellular connection is also low to non. The hotel is high up in the cliffs above Amalfi, which definitely has its charms. We enjoyed the challenge of carrying our 35ish kg luggage up (and down again) more than 1200 steps from Amalfi harbour. It nearly tok one hour and some sweating was included. Check out time is very early compared to many other hotels (10:30). In general we liked our stay here, and would come again, but some improvements can be made.

A very fresh and bright room with an amazing view. The room was super clean and had an excellent kitchen area too. Breakfast was continental buffet style with some cooked eggs as an option - delicious pastries & coffee. Can’t fault this hotel although access from Amalfi town was tough during late afternoon with not enough buses and little concept of queuing! Taxi fare was extortionate although in part due to fees the drivers have to pay each time to enter the town. The town Council should do better for tourists and those working in the tourism business.

Excellent stay at this hotel. One of the best hotels I stayed in my Italy trip. Rooms are completely renovated and looks great, just as the pictures. View to the amalfi coast is absolutely stunning. The hotel staff is very helpful, especially Francesco was a great help, understanding and very pleasant to talk to. The only thing to remember, carry light bags as this place is quite a walk from where the buses drop you off. Since we were a big group, and had a lot of luggage, the hotel staff was very helpful with that. Breakfast didn’t have a lot of option, but still they got fresh bread everyday and the almond cake was delicious. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful, the staff are so incredible friendly and Ida (presumably a manager) was very attentive, informative and welcoming. She gave us information on the steps from Postone to Amalfi, which don’t get me wrong we’re extremely tough and there was lots and lots and lots of steps, however it was quite a rewarding hike down and into the town. She also told us about the ferry from Amalfi to Positano, which we also did. The cost for one person one way was €10 and I would say the timings aren’t as frequent in the evening, however this was also a lovely activity to do and it meant we could see the Amalfi coastline. Heading back up to the hotel was a little difficult, taxis were €60 which we didn’t want to pay for a twenty minute drive. The bus is a great option, however make sure to plan your journey as they only seem to come every 3 hours. We ended up walking back up the steps to the hotel, this was definitely a tough walk, and we had quite a few breaks. In total it took us 35 minutes which wasn’t too bad. The bathroom was immaculate, with a lovely shower that was easy to use. The beds were very comfortable, and the rooms were all equipped with air con. Overall a wonderful stay, and a place that I would definitely recommend. Hopefully we’ll be coming back again in the future.

The view was absolutely amazing. The staff was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was delicious and fresh!

Everything here is amazing: the view, the rooms, the staff. The hotel is located high in the hills, so there is some stair climbing to be done until you reach it. So if you're the hiking type, or just someone who likes to walk a lot, you're going to love the experience. Otherwise the place is accessible by car as well. I would definitely love to return in the future

The views from this hotel were stunning and the restaurant next door was superb. However, the hotel's location is very far from Amalfi centre and difficult to get to. It's about a half hour drive and taxis cost 60 euros one way. I feel like other reviewers left this out - had we have known how difficult transportation was to and from this hotel, we would not have booked it. The village where the hotel is located is super small and there is not much to do at night. It would be nice if the hotel arrange shuttle service to and from Amalfi. The hotel owner also wasn't very helpful in helping us with transportation. The owner gave us bad directions to the bus (which is a 10-15 min walk) and failed to mention we have to buy bus tickets from the supermarket prior to boarding the bus, otherwise they would not let you on. As to the room, they were very clean but the bed was super hard and uncomfortable. Also, the free breakfast was not great and consisted of stale croissants and pastries bought from a grocery store. There is also "hot tub" on site, but it was gross and smelled weird. I'm not sure why this hotel got such great reviews. Overall, the hotel had nice views but would not recommend staying here.

Hotel review|Palazzo SAN Giovanni Resort - Pontone, Amalfi Coast.|Firstly I would not call this a resort more like a serviced up market b&b.|It is set in the amazingly stunning hills of Pontone above the Amalfi coast. The view is nothing short of spectacular, and the rooms are beautifully decorated in traditional Italian coastal decor. The location is quite away from the main town of Amalfi but only a 10 mins drive down the mountain. You can walk up from Amalfi but it is about a 30 min hike up A-LOT of stairs! Roads are very very narrow and at times difficult to negotiate. |That being said…Whilst we were there a young local man lost his life after the bus he was driving ran off the road, this in turn closed off the road and access to the hotel for 3 days . There was a few bad reviews circulating because people couldn’t access the hotel. This is not the hotels fault! We even had to drive up to Scala and scale down the 300 stairs! Not sure exactly how many but there was a lot! ||*BED - Hard 3/5|*PILLOWS - Great 5/5|*FOOD - 4/5 typical European breakfast, pastries, cold meats, cheese, eggs, fruit yoghurt, all tasty all plausible|*AMENITIES- 2/5 No Milk provided, I had to go and ask, was told we can’t keep milk in the rooms it would go off! (I can’t think of too many hotels where long life milk isn’t provided), No Coffee or sugar a couple of tea bags and that’s it. Mini Bar supplies $$. Shampoo only. |SERVICE- 4/5…needs a better concierge service and English speaking/understanding host.||PROS- |•Stunning Views- Great off the beaten path motel style accommodation. Beautifully appointed, decorated and clean.|•Good Service, although 1st gentleman not overly friendly, nice though. 2nd gentleman we met was super friendly and helpful. English wasn’t great all round.|•It’s very traditional…. it’s an adventure!|•Great walking tracks for those that love to walk/hike!|•Quite a few very nice restaurants and bars dotted around close by, the local town square which you pass through to get to hotel is quaint. Has a little bar/restaurant/general groceries.||CONS-|•STAIRS To get into the hotel you have to climb about 25 uneven stairs. And follow a cobblestone pathway for a few minutes to get to the hotel. The manager did come down and meet us at the car, however only took 2 bags up for us (we had a few and he took the lightest ones😆) we had to drag the rest and our tired selves up the hill.|The whole place is built into the side of a hill!|•PARKING- big issue, They have parking spots below (Council owned) for 15€ pn ($25AUD), you pay the hotel in cash (?) and it only gives you parking until 9am the following morning, NOT reserved so DO NOT pay for your entire stay. They have another parking spot (which states onsite and we thought was some kind of valet at booking upon rereading it does state self park) at 20€ pn but it is located 300m away. Bus from Amalfi is available however there is a fair walk from the stop to the hotel. CAB/Hire Car…50€ each way!!! Absolute Rort!!! (Nothing to do with the hotel though!)|•Drain smell from bathroom…easily fixed by placing water in the bidet and sink and placing towel over shower drain, had to keep the door closed. It’s out of their control. |•Wifi very slow||Would I Recommend?- YES I would, but with apprehension. If you are fit and healthy and have good strong legs and knees it an absolutely spectacular part of the world!|Would I stay here again?- NO I would not…purely because we did not, at all, like the stairs and/or The Amalfi coast.
