3 Best Day Trips from Portland, OR | Condé Nast Traveler

"Don’t be surprised if you’re overcome by a bit of sensory overload when walking into this hugely popular frozen treat shop . The walls are hot pink and neon green, with what looks like chocolate dripping from the edge of the ceiling. The menu is a series of similarly photo-heavy posters arranged around the walls. It’s hard to wrap your head around all the options—there are just so many, from ice cream to monstrous bowls of chile-topped fruit salad and every combination in between—but those visual clues do come in handy when trying to decide. The palatas come in an array of flavors ranging from classic (strawberry), to creative (rice pudding), to less common in the U.S. (nanche, which is a sour-sweet tropical fruit). The ice cream selection is similar. Do you want to play it safe with cookies and cream? Or do you want to be a bit more adventurous and go for the smoked milk, cheese curd, or rose petal?" - Danielle Centoni

Google
Love this place! Delicious good little treats to eat & a great variety to choose from. A little pricey but you do get great tasting stuff! I think everyone should try this place @ least once.

Fahad Salim

Google
This ice cream spot offers a great variety of flavors with a nice texture! Some of the flavors are quite unique and not commonly found elsewhere. Personally, I absolutely loved the Dubai ice cream that one of the staff members suggested (she was incredibly kind!!). I will definitely be returning!

Daniel Arellano

Google
Service is getting slower each year. There is no urgency whatsoever from employees to get customers out the door. This place is worth stopping by only if there’s no line otherwise be prepared to wait 45 mins for a simple order

Agustin Palmas

Google
This place really is great. The ice cream is 10/10, the prices might be a bit high but it's local hand made ice cream not Baskin Robbins. The one thing to work on would be some of the staff. They are not always welcoming or friendly.

Google
Omgoodness the variety of flavors is amazing!!!! I got Horchata and hubby got mazapan and both were amazing❣️🥰👏🏼

Jasmine Olalde

Google
Best ice cream place ever! They have a wide selection of flavors, and the prices are very inexpensive. They make all their ice cream in their shop! If you have not had ice cream here you are missing out!

Ana Garcia

Google
Plenty of options here for your sweet tooth. Must try the churros!

Ella Giberson

Google
Went in 8 minutes till close and the girl that helped us had the best customer service. She was very enthusiastic and had us try dang near all the flavors. Absolutely loved our experience and the ice cream was great!

Yelp
The fruit ice creams and popsicles with it without chiles are my favorite. The raspados do not match Sonoran taste expectations. The line could be long but it's truly worth the wait. It's all about the ice cream and paletas.

Yelp
Been here twice and each time has been a disappointment. Got a diablito, honestly didn't even taste good, was mostly ice and nothing else, ended up tossing it. My boyfriend got a raspado de fresa, literally was mostly a mountain of candy on top and minimal liquid, 97% ice chunks. Also each of these are "mediums" and were like almost $8 each. Small value and mostly ice, not interested. Definitely my last time trying this place out, there are definitely better ones all along Salem and Woodburn.

Yelp
Long lines but moves very quickly. So many amazing options to choose from. We got some paletas for baby and wife got a shaved ice mango chamoy. I got a milkshake and it might've been one of the best milkshakes I've had. Perfect consistency, large portion. You can choose your flavors and I got pistachio and coffee. Can't really see all the flavors till you get close. Would be nice if they listed them all somewhere on the wall.

Yelp
Fast service. Creamy fruity ice cream. They also have snacks. We went here after eating tacos.

Yelp
Randomly stumbled here and I'm so glad we did! Visiting from Seattle will make this our go to stop every time we come to the outlets. Large variety of options and it's worth the wait. Fair prices and big servings!

Yelp
We have been coming here for years. A really great Saturday or Sunday is to stop and have a dinner at any of several good restaurants and then stopping here for ice cream or any number of other treats...I will admit that I have only had the ice cream but the other treats look great. There is a wide variety of flavors that you are not going to get in most other ice cream places and so far I can say everything I've tried has been at least "good" and usually great. Tonight I was kind of old school and had pistachio and vanilla...both great (the Pistachio reminds of of a pistachio ice cream from the very lamented "Pat Mitchel's" in the Binghamton NY area...another place that made all of their ice cream in house and so good we've waited in line outside in the snow in an upstate NY winter for almost an hour!). We live about thirty minutes away but I think it is easily worth the drive from Portland. The staff is very friendly and competent. The ice cream is fantastic!

Yelp
Great ice cream shop. There always seem to be a line but you can get any dessert you want here. Ice cream, milkshakes and snacks. The area seems interesting/sketchy but I would risk my life for a good dessert. Service can be slow but they are super friendly.

Criss S.

Yelp
This ice cream shop is a gem. Their ice creams are homemade. They have a variety of flavors, all influenced by Mexican flavors. My two favorites were gansito ice cream and horchata ice cream. Gansito ice cream reminds me of my childhood. The gansito is a Mexican cake covered with chocolate filled with strawberry jelly; imagine all of that in ice cream. The horchata is rice water; delicious. The horchata Ice cream has flavored rice, and you can taste the rice and cinnamon. When you get to the paleterias, asked them to give you an example for each!!

Yelp
I feel like I'm in Oaxaca and the best exotic ice cream I can find! Excellent customer service too! My fav ice cream is Rose Petals, mamey, nance, guanábana y los diablitos y gazpachos de frutas! Omg the "leche quemada" (burned milk) ice cream is the best!

Vik P.

Yelp
Great selection, friendly people that work there, good location I got a popsicle and strawberry shake. Both of them are below average in taste. They didn't come cold too. Dirty, people stand in Line too close to each other, slow checkout process- you have to wait an average of 3 mins once you get to cashier

Yelp
Ice cream is good. Love you can same if you are in decided. The fresas con crema are delicious (strawberry n cream) I believe ice cream is homemade and have good variety. Service is not great. Most of the workers are younger girls and are not to friendly or fast. It does get very busy so plan on staying for a long time. I will continue to visit as Ialways do because its good. However..I do wish they would, created a faster friendlier atmosphere.

Melanie P.

Yelp
The best Mexican ice cream I have ever tired. It worth coming here although it can be far to some people it going to be good. Be aware that the line is always pretty big but the prices and good is rewarding.

Yelp
I have visited here many times since they moved to downtown Woodburn area. I have never heard of them until they moved to this side of town. My other half tells me it have resemblances to ice cream parlors in Mexico. As you enter the shop, it clearly puts off a Mexican culture of decor. I have been here at least five different times, and the place is always busy (which is a good sign). Ice cream is always made fresh there and the quality flavor showcases that. Since they produce their own ice cream flavors, the selection reflects upon that. You will find unique flavors like tamarind, rice, walnut, and even cheese (yeah, really! and my girl loves the cheese one). And they also have the classics such as strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla. I personally like the strawberries & cream one, and also the caramel one. I have also tried their fresh milkshakes as well. Essentially, you pick which ice cream flavor you want, and they transform it into a milkshake. Same great tasty flavor in a drinkable fashion. They have great quality flavors here; you can tell it's fresh every time. Aside from the great tasting ice cream is their price. Their price is great compared to other ice cream shops. For under $2.00 you will get a large scoop (not those tiny small scoops you get elsewhere). Great value and great quality - total win!

Yelp
I like the variety of options we can get here. From raspados, to ice cream, diablitos and even tositlocos. I can never walk out with just one thing. I usually end up getting either a diablito or tostilocos (you have the option of going with the classic ones or you can use hot cheetos or takis). You're even allowed to sample multiple flavors without feeling bad. And you'll definitely want to try some of their more interesting flavors like chamos, queso, or even tamarindo. I like to add chamoy to almost everything I get there because it is delicious and amazing. My biggest caveat is probable how busy it is and how odd the way their lines/ropes are to keep people in line. But overall it isn't too bad. Definitely stop by if you're craving some Mexican sweets.

Yelp
We love this place! Is like being in Mexico, homemade ice cream, and they have everything, shakes, strawberries and cream, raspados, ice cream, banana splits, diablitos, etc. Everything is delicious, my two favorites are the raspados and the pistachio ice cream. They have like 6 girls working at the same time and they're all so nice and patient, they let you try all the samples you want and explain to you what everything is. We go there every time we come to Woodburn, and we can go to Woodburn just to come here. Prices are so affordable also!
google avatar

Yelp
Love love love this paleteria! It's a place you must stop at if you're in Woodburn! The variety of options are endless and I'm sure the whole family will enjoy. My sister and I are lactose intolerant so we love getting their water based ice creams. My mom doesn't like sweets too much so she gets a diablito loaded with chamoy and Chile se polvo & as for my dad he loves a ice cream loaded onto a big waffle cone while my other sister heads straight to the paletas! Everything looks so fresh and delicious and the prices are just right for a great treat.

Eric E.

Yelp
Great Ice Cream Shop in Woodburn, they have all kinds of different ice creams and sundaes and etc... They have some very strange flavors like Rose flavored ice cream. So definitely give it a try and try some of the different flavors you won't find elsewhere.
google avatar

Milen F.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this place. Everything is good quality. They have an amazing array of flavors, but most of all, I now know of a place that has authentic raspados! Totally recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
El Paisanito is a real treat, and a mandatory stop on any summertime visit to downtown Woodburn. The ice cream flavors are virtually limitless, from American classics like Cookies & Cream, to more unusual flavors like Pistachio and Pine Nut -- or the many authentic flavors of Mexico. I have the most experience with the frozen paletas, and rate them very highly. Whether it's rich flavors with cream mixed in; real fruit paletas like Mango, Pina, and Watermelon; or my personal favorite, Pepino con Chile (Cucumber with Chile powder) -- at only 36 calories, it is a refreshing treat that will fit any diet. We were just there today and were excited to see that they had expanded since our last visit -- a move that virtually doubled their retail space. If you are in Woodburn on a hot day you should stop in and take a variety pack of paletas home with you.

Yelp
A great treat with favors that just dance on your tongue. Excellent service. It is our second time to enjoy the ice cream store.
google avatar

Kim O.

Yelp
Amazing flavors, so many choice and so little time. Had the Carmel and coffee flavors, "baby scoops" and they were awesome. Hubby had the pistachio and elote, surprisingly great! Piñón, rose also good. All the way around awesome experience! Well done!

Silvia M.

Yelp
food there is great although the customer service is not.. they just don't care and they do whatever they want so disrespectful. one of the girls had blonde and black hair in a pony tail and is short. she's the rudest out of all the employees never going back again

Kimberly R.

Yelp
I would give less the one star if I could. We went in the store and waited to be help. We'll looking around no one came to help us. We ask the cashier if we had to pay first before we order. She said she could charge if we had a receipt.we repeated the question. She said we needed a receipt. We asked where we get a receipt from. She rudely said over there. The other girls who had just been standing around finally walked up to us . We asked a simple question about the flavor of the ice cream. She said she didn't know yell at the other 2 who also didn't know. The customers service was terrible and the work were slow. We were the only people ordering and there was 3 girls.

Yelp
Best ice cream shop in town!! Diablitos are amazing!! Unique ice cream flavors. Super friendly staff!
google avatar

Vonny A.

Yelp
This place needs to train there new people that they hire !!!! They messed up on both my stuff then asked to change it and they said "it's going to come out the same" what kind of service is that I don't recommend this place especially if they hire new people!
google avatar

Rita J.

Yelp
This Mexican ice cream parlor brings back fond memories of vacations in Mexico. They offer delicious ice cream flavors like cajeta, nance and mango, with free tastings. They have a wonderful selection of ice cream, as well as paletas and aguas frescas. A perfect sweet end to a meal at nearby Tule restaurant.

Jorge C.

Yelp
True foreign flavors. They have milk based icecream and water based flavors. A bit of a line but that takes nothing from the experience and in their control, they do however give good customer service to make up for it Wich is even better.
google avatar

Ellen R.

Yelp
This was a great mom's and pops ice cream shop. It gets pretty packed in here. Lots of different choices when it comes to homemade ice cream and then you can also get frozen dip bananas, to fruits drinks, and also hot cheetos with some cheese sauce on it! It's a great stop when your there in the area hit it up.
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
The only store that puts a focus on mainly ice cream in all of Woodburn. If you can't get your hands on a paletero or ice cream truck for ice cream, this is the place to go. They have several unique flavors many of them are flavors you see in Mexico.
google avatar

Joel R.

Yelp
This was my last time going here I received the worst customer service honestly all the girls serving have a hostile attitude ... I was pregnant and was craving ice-cream and I had called in advance because they were closing in about 15 min and spoke with I believe the owner or the manager some guy answered the phone and he said it was fine that he would let the crew on duty know that I will be stopping by and when I got there they had just put the closed sign and customers were inside still getting served and one girl runs and locks the door and I wasn't able to get inside I was waiting at the door for about 15 min in the cold rain and pregnant I was trying to get their attention to let them know that I had called and all they did was ignore me and laugh honestly this is the worst place I am never going back. They still had customers ordering and all I wanted was a scoop of ice-cream that I was craving...they just decided to ignore me and laugh!
google avatar

Eden C.

Yelp
Artisan popsicles from a wide range of flavors that won't disappoint. I have been to this place since they opens back in 2011.
google avatar

Paris D.

Yelp
Love this place! Every time I go I am always the only white Gringa but I am always treated nicely. And their ice cream and other cold treats are out of this world; and all for an amazing price too! It's a shame it's so far away, but I always come by when I'm in Woodburn! Thanks for being great!

Paige K.

Yelp
This is the Disneyland of frozen treats! If you are ever in Woodburn shopping, this place is with the trip to the downtown district!

Blunt Reviews T.

Yelp
This place has really good stuff but the staff is soooo slow and don't really have customer service skills. The frozen chocolate covered bananas would be better if they didn't dip them on the spot and used different chocolate because they taste weird and crack so basically you have chocolate shell in pieces and a frozen banana when you leave. If the girls were friendlier and quicker this place would be a 5 star place.
google avatar

Nikee W.

Yelp
They have crazy homemade flavors like Elote (Sweet corn), Mango chile, Avocado and Mexican Caramel. It reminded me of a local Mexican Salt and Straw. All the girls working we really sweet and didn't mind all my questions. They also had milkshakes, popsicles and lots of fruit based treats. Sometimes they are cash only, sometimes they are not and they are closed from October-ish to March-ish.

Maleny M.

Yelp
the ice cream is unique!!! but their customer service is trash and their employees need to learn how to smile! they need to eat some ice cream and cheer the ffffff up!!!! they always look so mad and customer service is everything! they need to work on that
google avatar

Flora R.

Yelp
The paletas a SO good. Many of the fruity/berry flavored treats come from local growers. So far, I've tried the raspberry and blackberry paletas. By far, the blackberry is my favorite fruit bar.
google avatar

Aurora D.

Yelp
I was in Woodburn for the weekend and came in here with my friend who is obsessed with their diablitos. Although I wasn't planning on getting anything, I walked out with a scoop of coffee flavored ice cream and an horchata. It was amazing!!! Last time I had ice cream like that was in Mexico. I haven't even found a place in the Bay Area with such authentic ambiance (maybe if I go to LA). The ice cream cone and horchata were each $1.00. With prices and ice cream that amazing, I'm going to drive from Eugene way more often to try all their flavors.
google avatar

Sasha P.

Yelp
I am lactose intolerant and this place is a great place to go when I have a sweet tooth. They have lots of sorbet flavors & all homemade. They have bits of fruit in all of their soft serve which is nice. The diablitos are a little spicy but irresistible. Customer service is always good.
google avatar

Fernando R.

Yelp
These place is bomb love the paletas with fruit in them, also the diablitos an ice cream is hella good.

Gina M.

Yelp
Employees are always very rude. I literally waited 15 minutes to be helped because they kept on skipping over me. The ice cream is good but they honestly have horrible employees.

Lynn C.

Yelp
The paletas are delicious. Our favorites are coconut, lime, and strawberry. Honestly delicious. Very fresh and clean flavors. For an extra treat getting the chocolate covered coconut or strawberry is a treat.

Melissa J.

Yelp
Me and my husband used to love this place. The ice cream had a very distinct taste not like others. Also loved supporting small business. The workers are very friendly but the thing that did it for me though was picking long strands of hair out of my ice cream on two different occasions. The first time i thought you know it happens but the second time really was the last straw.
