The 7 Best Hostels in Rome (Updated 2025)

"I liked the stylish décor — black, red, and white communal areas with artwork and chandeliers in the private rooms — and the convenient short walk to Termini station. Dorms are basic and beds aren’t amazing, but there’s an on-site café, a large kitchen, very affordable rates, and a nice touch of a free glass of champagne on arrival plus social events like wine & movie nights." - Matthew Kepnes

This was honestly one of the most boring and misleading hostels I've ever stayed in. The only good thing about it is the location it's really close to the station, which made getting around easy. However, the list of downsides is long. There was no soap in the rooms, and you have to buy towels because they don’t even offer rentals. Basic amenities were lacking, which is unacceptable for any hostel. What’s worse, much of the information both online and displayed in the hostel is just false. We actually planned our travel dates around "wine night" thinking it would be a fun, cheap social event but it doesn’t even exist. Total letdown. To top it off, the vibe was uncomfortable. The guys in my room were heavily drinking in the room, which I’ve never experienced in a hostel before. It didn’t feel safe or social, just awkward and messy. Honestly, just avoid this place. There are definitely better, more honest options out there. I could go on about what was wrong, but you’re better off staying somewhere else.

My friend and I had booked this hostel for 4 nights, however sadly due to terrible cleanliness and an overall unhygienic living space, we cut our stay here short by two nights. We have stayed in over 10 hostels in the last three weeks during our travels and to say this was the most expensive one with have stayed at, it has been the worst by far. Basic cleaning practices and standards are not kept here. Firstly, we arrived at the hostel to check in at 12pm. We understood that we would not be able to get into the room until 3pm so they could turn over the room. However, were we told upon arrival that the room was ready which we thought was brilliant so we could settle in. As soon as we entered our room we were greeted with a foul smell similar to fermented cheese (not an exaggeration). As soon as I opened the locker closest to my bed there were a pair of filthy socks left inside by the people before us exuding what smelt like toxic fumes. At this point it was clear the room had not been cleaned properly as there were clumps of hair on the floor next to my bed as well as random dried spillages on the floor. I went out and asked the main desk if they had any disinfectant or spray so we could give our lockers a clean over, which is when I told them about the socks. They said they would send someone. It took a while for someone to arrive so my friend took it upon herself to get some Toliet roll and remove the socks herself as they stunk so bad. When the man arrived to clean it up, the staff were laughing about it and later on two other staff came into the room randomly to look at the wall and mentioned the situation again to us and laughed. We didn’t mind this too much at this point as mistakes happen and things get missed. However once we went to the Toliets it was clear that the cleaning standards were terrible. In one of the toilets there was a black moldy paper sign next to the Toliet saying what you can’t put down the loo. All the toilets and shower cubicles were disgusting, from random stained liquids dripping down the walls to them just rotting and rusting. Drains were full clogged with hair visible. The sinks and taps were covered in stains and were rusting. Hairs all over the sink all the time. Some of the toilets were stained at the bottom with poo. A mop bucket with dirty water was always sat in there making it smell delightful as you can imagine. When you walk into the bathroom itself, there is a horrible muddy foot towel on the floor which wasn’t changed whilst we were there. The showers themselves would every now and then blast you with piping hot water no matter how cold you had the water set. The bedding was a paper thin throw with an itchy material and provided no warmth to you during the night. Finally, once we went to inform the desk that we were going to leave early, not once did they ask any reason as to why. I understand we could be leaving for personal reasons however, it would have been nice to know they are bothered about improving their business. If you aren’t squeamish or bothered by uncleanliness this would be okay for you, if you are it would be worth paying the extra 10-30 euros for the next best place. Overall, it leaves a lot to be desired.

you get the bed, and that’s about it… I had the worst shower ever here. Without exaggeration the water would go from ice cold to scalding hot ever 5 seconds without moving the handle. I ended up just finishing the shower freezing so that I would not get burned, there was no setting that would make the water simply warm. The area is also sketchy, but at least close to the train station. I would give it two stars from my personal experience, but I saw other reviewers complain about things that the staff claim they were “working on”. The WiFi, for example, was TERRIBLE. Could not use it in my room. In another review the staff said they would fix this, but they did not. Bathrooms were also dirty. They smelled, there was dirty mop water by the sink, and bugs in the main sinks. The “modern decor” is only in the common areas, the rooms and bathrooms are bare. I do not care about that but it shows more about the guest experience. Another example is the kitchen. No basic things like instant coffee or even essentials like cooking oil. Staff were not welcoming or helpful when it came to questions either. Edit: notice how the “Palladini team” responds to every negative review saying that they are disproportionate and in some reviews they even say they ask Google to remove them. Look at the wide range of views, most find the WiFi, bathrooms, safety, etc unfavorable just like I mentioned. Also, how professional of you to blame your customers for your faulty maintenance issues when you are the ones responsible for making sure simple things like the showers work properly. I didn’t bother going to the staff because they were unhelpful to my other concerns.

I stayed at this hostel in Rome recently with a group of friends, and while the staff was friendly and the location convenient, we ran into several serious issues that made our stay uncomfortable and concerning. First, the air conditioning went out twice during our stay. On the first day, it shut off around 4 PM. We were told it would be fixed in 30 minutes, but when we returned at 2 AM, it was still off. It finally came back on around 3 AM. Then, on our last day, the AC went out again while we were out to lunch. Although we were checking out, new guests were unable to check in because of it they were just sitting in the lobby waiting. A neighboring business told us that AC problems happen there often, so it seems to be a recurring issue. On top of that, there are some questionable policies. You either have to leave your ID at the front desk for the entire stay or pay €5 to keep your room key. (we just arrived in the country, why would we have 5€ on us? Leaving an ID for three days felt uncomfortable and potentially not even legal depending on the country’s regulations. You also have to pay for a towel, which would’ve been fine if we had known in advance. The most concerning part of our stay was the day we returned to our private room and found the AC turned off and the window wide open. We had left personal items out, including our passports, assuming no one else would access the room since only we had keys. When we asked the front desk, they said they had come in to “clean.” But our room wasn’t cleaned at all the trash was still there, nothing had been touched. When we pointed that out, they said they just “take out the trash,” but clearly that didn’t happen either. We were very uncomfortable with the fact that someone entered our private space without doing anything and without notifying us. After that, we requested that no one enter our room again. Overall, while the staff was nice and tried to be helpful, the recurring AC issues, strange policies around keys and towels, and lack of respect for guest privacy were disappointing and at times, concerning. I would recommend checking recent reviews before booking especially if you’re staying in the summer or value personal security and consistent amenities.

This might be one of the worst hostels I’ve stayed in ever. First of all, staff was unhelpful when we couldn’t find the actual hostel and told us it’s just in a “building.” They did not tell us you had to ring the bell or anything so we were walking in circles for 20 minutes. Then we come back at night and we had to pay in cash for a deposit for the KEY? Then they took our passports hostage for no reason. The room itself is ok, clean so that’s not too bad. However the quality is so awful the curtain rod literally fell off in the middle of the night and I had dry wall and paint over my bed. Please reconsider for the price you’re paying for this accommodation.

I can partly understand the bad rewievs here, but my stay at Palladini was very good and as expected. The staff was friendly and heplfull - yeah they were acting professionall and not more, but this is what I am expecting from a Hostel in the capital of Italy with 100 of check ins and outs everyday. When I had any questions everybody was helpfull and the check in and out procedure was very easy, thats all I need personally. The room (4 bed) was also as expected, the bed was also already made so I could just store my stuff and explore Rome - really good! I also liked that there are not only bunk but also single beds and you can choose if you arrive early. My room was also equiped with a functional air condition and a window to the backyard which we left open at night without disturbance. Close to the hostel you can have breakfast, snacks and other meals and services very cheap and reach the Colusseum and the metro fast. There are some points of improvement: The bathroom was fine, but the shower was a litte hard to handle as the temperature swapped and you had to be carefull. Also there was no door for the shower so the bathroom may get wet a little and it smelled a bit muddy. Nevertheless The room was cleaned daily, so it wasnt that much of a problem. Its also a bit pricy but that may also be because of the time I visited (Day of the Republic of Italy) and Roma itself. I can't rate the events and the kitchen as I did not use or participated in them. In Conclusion: If you are looking for a hostel close to Roma Termini for a short time and with a helpfull service and OK rooms this is yours, I would come again. Thanks to the helpfull staff!

Pretty good! The rooms were really relaxed and comfy and I made some friends here. I stayed in a 4 bedroom share so it was a little more money than a larger room I'm sure. Well worth it to me.

Stay there just for an over night , i love the strategy of the location is very convenience, walking distance to most of the main tourist attraction. Just like 500m away from the Roma Termini station. The room is clean, spacious, comfortable is worth for the price, however the living room is bit awkward, it's doesnt matter to me. I would love to come back because of the great convenience location.
