The Best Places to Visit in December, From Banff to Belize | Condé Nast Traveler

"At Frankfurt’s Palmengarten I experienced Winterlichter (Winter Lights), an open-air seasonal installation running Dec 9–Jan 14 that features light installations and video art and makes the botanical garden a festive nighttime attraction." - Matt Ortile

Vast, almost otherworldly botanic gardens. Fascinating any time of the year if you have any interests in plants and botany. I went in autumn and the park was radiant with autumn colour. I went round clockwise from the Palmentgartenstrasse side and the think this was best. Started with nice lake views then onto the butterfly house and then the mind boggling greenhouses with various climate controlled zones.

Took my girlfriend on a date here and would happily return for more (both to the girl and the garden). The ticket price is well worth the experience, and I’d strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking to escape the cityscape into a lovely area of natural beauty. My only complaint was that it was so popular that many other people had the same idea I did, resulting in some over-crowding in a few of the areas. But overall, it receives 5 stars from me and a desire to return to lose myself there in the future.

The palmengarten was absolutely stunning and well taken care of, lots to see and the atmosphere is amazing. Its a great place for all ages, they have an awesome play area for the kids too. I just wish there were more toilets but other then that the place is a must see

The lichter fest during winter is a worth while activity along with family. Options for some quick bites or a quick dinner are there. Be early to get parking. Price is pretty reasonable considering that you are in center of Frankfurt City.

Google
Beautiful garden, it's so soothing to walk here. Families with kids, couples and groups enjoyed the mood. Next time we'll visit them on weekdays because the crowd was huge. We anticipated amazing butterflies but there weren't many.

Google
Excellent botanical garden! Very large, with a wide variety of ecosystems. The tropicarium ranges from the Himalayan mountains to the deserts of South America. Above the waterfall there is a nice city view. In the underground grotto, there are aquariums with fish and plants from all over the world.

Me and my fiancé were in Frankfurt for a few days and the gardens were recommended by several people on Reddit. It cost €9 per person to enter and as we visited on a Friday, we almost had the place to ourselves. It was very quiet. As we visited in November, there wasn’t much to see in the gardens however there are several buildings housing tropical plants, ponds, waterfalls etc. One of them is full of butterflies which was wonderful. Well worth a visit, we loved it.

Google
I visited the Palmengarten in Frankfurt am Main today 🌿 Such a peaceful oasis in the city. I really enjoyed wandering through the diverse plant collections, enjoying the lush greenery and the little hidden gems such as the charming ponds with fountains. The vibrant colors of the flowers were a delight and it was the perfect escape to connect with nature ❤️❤️❤️

Yelp
I visit botanical gardens wherever I travel and I'm so glad I had a chance to visit Palmengarten! The grounds are beautiful and the plant variety across varied climates is really spectacular. From the deserts to the sub-arctic and everything in between, the gardens have it. Expect to spend four to five hours to get the full experience. The cafes are good and I stopped for a coffee and pastry, which were delicious.

Yelp
Beautiful gardens in Frankfurt. Great place to feel like you're out of the city, but it's in the city, just feels quiet and peaceful. Lots to see in the green houses and you can go kayaking in the pond which is cute.

Yelp
This is probably one of the most fantastic places I've been too, and it was very much similar to the Buchard gardens in Victoria, British Columbia. While botany, is not my expertise, I couldn't help myself notice of how interesting it was to read and learn about all the plants, flowers, leaves, seasons, harvesting etc etc. I could have easily spent the entire day, studying each and every species of plant in great detail, but my children's impatience, cut the trip short by half. What a magnificent display of all the plants that were kept and maintained and how they are harvested thru out the course of the year. I'm glad we were given a map to navigate thru the park, otherwise we would have been long lost. Another fun part of the tour, was the boat ride in the little lake/ pond that I think was 5 euros. Or maybe 10 euros for the family. A great spot to visit.

Yelp
Pre-covid review Loved our time here! We had a free day to spend in Frankfurt and decided to jump on the hop on/off bus and tour the city. We stopped at a few museums on the way & Palmengarten was on my list!! We didn't get to spend as much time here as we'd have liked, but got to walk throughout most of the grounds. I got to see lily pads that were flipped over, I've never seen that before! They were huge lily pads! The grounds were gorgeous! Lots of flowers throughout. Loved the bamboo forest! They had a lovely greenhouse also! Huge fountain! The day we visited was pretty quiet and we didn't see too many people there. It's not a huge garden area and you can see everything within 2 hours. It's a bit tucked away from the main street and we had to walk a few blocks to get out. Also, the entrance wasn't the easiest to find. Definitely recommended! Tip: There is a museum club where you can visit a bunch of museums for 1 price. Palmengarten was on the list!

Yelp
With a 36-degree C day in front of us, we decided the Palmengarten might be a good place to visit for shade and water views. It's an easy one-transfer S-Bahn ride from FRA airport. The size of the place felt similar to the Botanical Gardens in my home area of STL. We discovered beautiful and well-cared-for garden areas, a butterfly house, and shaded resting areas. It was a great spot to spend a few hours.

Yelp
Beautiful place to visit if you enjoy botanicals. It was pouring rain when we went. The flowers were gorgeous, and there were many different greenhouses representing all of the climates of the world.

Yelp
A lovely place to visit, even in winter. The app is very informative, and tells you what's in the different buildings (eg bromeliad, arctic), where different sculptures are, where points of interests for kids are, etc. In the summer, it would be great to visit with children. I saw play grounds, water play, Minigolf, and a railroad loop.

Yelp
I think the Palmengarten might be the best botanical garden I have ever been to. When I went to Frankfurt, I definitely did not know that something they would be known for is their botany but they absolutely should because the place is fantastic. The tickets were quite cheap in general compared to other botanical gardens, but if you are a student, it's only €3 which is simply unheard of. Here are some of my favorite bits of the Palmengarten: - I now think that every botanical garden should have a butterfly garden. It makes so much sense. One of the ways key ways to have biodiversity is butterfly pollination and having this garden would be a great way to explain this phenomenon that makes our planet what it is today. Regardless of the scientific reasoning, it just adds to the eventfulness of the botanical garden, and this one was no different with the Palmengarten as it had many different species of butterflies all within a small area. Makes it extremely vibrant. - The butterfly cocoon display in the butterfly garden was absolutely amazing. You are able to see all the different species of butterflies slowly come out of their cocoon and it's interesting to see how each nest differs based on the different species they are. - The amount of indoor spaces in the Palmengarten is mind-blowing. The separate their areas based off of which geographic areas the plants would natively live in. And because these areas are in very physically close proximity to each other in the indoor spaces, its a fantastic way to get a quick and in-depth comparison for how each place differs from one another. - The amount of wildflowers growing here is absolutely incredible. There's this field somewhat near the back that you can tell the Palmengarten didn't design for it to be covered in these vibrant wildflowers, but it is which just gives the garden so much more personality and character. - Did I mention how cheap the tickets were to here? - Also Frankfurt is sunnier than I had expected, so on a beautiful day, the plant's color just looks this much more vibrant. Overall, absolutely fantastic experience and I genuinely cannot wait to come back again!

Yelp
Toller Garten, vor allem hat mir das Schmetterlingenhaus gefallen :) Als Student der Goethe Uni ist der Eintritt auch sogar kostenlos.

Yelp
Loved it! It's huge! I went in the winter but it was still very nice! Can't wait to go back during a different time of year. I got wonderful pictures of the flowers that were the seasonal ones which were Chrysanthemums. They had a few tropical greenhouses which were cool and warm, so perfect breaks from walking around in the cold :D

Yelp
Palmengarten is such a lovely thing to do in Frankfurt. It can be a little tricky to get to. There is a subway station nearby, but you may need to transfer lines once or twice, depending on where you're coming from, and you will still need to walk a couple of blocks. The entry price is pretty reasonable, at 7 euros per adult (at the time I'm writing this review.) There are multiple exhibits, including indoor greenhouses full of plant species from around the world, including cacti, and of course, palms. There are also lovely outdoor areas such as the rose garden, and the lakes and waterfalls. It's pretty easy to walk the whole park fairly quickly, but there are plenty of places to sit and rest and enjoy the views too. There were lots of ducks and geese (including a couple of babies!) and tons of colorful plants and flowers all around. We went on a gray day, and the sights were still lovely-- plus, it wasn't too hot, and the gardens weren't too crowded. This is a really peaceful place to visit. Plus, it's been around since the 1800's, so there's a lot of history here!

Yelp
Open daily at 09h00 the Frankfurt Botanical Garden (Palmengarten) covers a lot of space in Westend-Süd, but between areas under construction and too many open areas in between the various buildings it feels as though better curation is necessary to compete with truly world class collections. Certainly interesting for its take on the tropics and desert, particularly for those who may not have visited either climate, May 2019's Citrus exhibit was largely a waste.

Yelp
I love going to botanical gardens, and this was no exception! There is so much to do and see, even in the middle of winter! All the plants are clearly well taken care of and very well labeled. There are several different green houses to explore. Of course there is the large Palm greenhouse, But there are also green houses that have sub and Antarctic plans, and a series of interconnected green houses that include plants from rainforest and deserts. If you want a special treat, you should visit on a Monday or a call ahead to visit one of the desert green houses that seems to hold very rare and delicate plants. If you have children, there is a playground which looks absolutely delightful. There are many different toys that they can play with. Including what seems to be a small mini golf area and a contraption to manipulate the flow of water. In the summer, there is also a small train that runs around. I can't wait to go again!

Yelp
I was skeptical about visiting this place but one of my friends managed to convince me to give it a try. I'm amazed at how well maintained this place is. The restrooms and, the park itself are clean. I felt safe. There are many beautiful species of plants and, a few animals. There is a train and, spots that kids will enjoy. This was a truly pleasing experience. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
WOW! So glad I went by myself so I could take my time strolling. I stuck to a plan of staying to the right and did a counterclockwise circle through the park. I was only halfway done when I checked my map & saw I had half more to go still. Woohoo!! Went at about 11am today, Saturday Jul 14,2017. Not busy at all. Even if it was busy I imagine it wouldn't be too bad as it's such a large area. It wasn't too hot or sunny a day so the greenhouses weren't unbearable. Still pleasant to get back outside though. Will recommend to friends & coworkers.

Yelp
schönes Gebäude, schöne Pflanzen, ein schöner und ruhiger Ort, um einen Nachmittag zu verbringen. Ich würde es jedem empfehlen.

Yelp
A great place to visit whilst in Frankfurt. There is a lot to see here, and visitors need time to see everything. Quite fascinating information to be read in the Tropical House, filled with plants from different climates. It takes some getting used to.

Yelp
Very nice place, highly recommended to tourists and people who live in the area. Very nice

Yelp
I absolutely love gardens so this was first on my list of Frankfurt places - and I was not disappointed. Beautiful gardens and a peaceful setting to stroll and enjoy. The greenhouse are worth the visit alone with their variety of habitats and plants. I spent about 2.5 hours here but you could have a shorter visit. The dahlia area was spectacular in late September and I'm sure that earlier other flowers must be amazing.

Yelp
Everything you thought you would find in a botanical garden is here, large glass houses with various climates housing exotic plants from around the world, a rose garden, band stand, narrow gauge railway, lawns, walkways, children's play area, boating lake, restaurant and plenty of opportunity for an ice cream too. Events and shows are held on a regular basis, the autumn firework display is worthy of note. A great place for a great day out.

Yelp
Palmengarten is a very well maintained and easy to navigate botanical garden. With rotating and seasonal exhibits, it's easy to make multiple visits. Wide open spaces mean you don't have to feel crowded even when the park is busy and there are a few cafes tucked in various corners of the park for a relaxing hot or cold drink. Top Three Highlights: 1.) Reasonable entrance fee 2.) Easily accessible by public transit 3.) Greenhouses open year round

Yelp
One of the fav places in Frankfurt! Can't tell when it's better to go, spring summer fall or winter, okay maybe spring :)! Those palms cactuses loovee! During spring/summer you can also take your picnic blanket and enjoy the day there Soo pretty. On one lake you can also rent a pedalo - funny experience:). It's a heaven for photographers and instagramers :D.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about this experience! The gardens, the wildlife, and cafes are a treat work the walk! A definite must see in Frankfurt

Yelp
I love "my" Palmengarten in every season and every time of the day, I show it off to everybody - I really do come here with all my guests because it is just a beautiful place to hang out, go for a walk, have ice-cream or a pick-nick, play minigolf and discover exceptional arrangements of plants and flowers...
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool place...lots to see so set aside at least a few hours. Lots of walking on stone, hills and steps. Don't miss the rock garden area and the tropical garden (very warm in there!). €7 euros for admission. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Lynn T.

Yelp
The Palmengarten is the perfect place to while away an hour or a day, all for 5 euros. The roses are lovely, and if you are lucky enough to be in Frankfurt in late July and August, the dahlias are just spectacular. There are two cafes on site, so there's no need to leave the premise if you want a cappuccino or a sandwich. There's a lovely, peaceful lawn with plenty of metal lounging chairs if you just want to hang out and read a book.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the Frankfurt palmengarten!! I've been here three times and it never disappoints. Beautiful glass houses filled with plants from all regions of the world. It's a perfect escape from winter. You can sit in the climate controlled rooms and imagine you are in a tropical paradise. One building houses seasonal exhibits which are also quite impressive. Highly recommended coming here.

Yelp
Oops. Forgot to leave review for this place. It's beautiful, serene, and lots to see. You cannot rush and hopefully come on a beautiful day as you can explore this place for hours so bring your comfortable shoes, layer up, and enjoy. I rented a boat and went on the water lake. The fish swimming right up next to you is an awesome experience after you get over how many there are flapping wildly around you. You'll never feel rushed or wait long for anything and leave feeling completely zenned out.
google avatar

Yelp
Great day outdoors when the weather is good. Try not to come on a rainy or windy day, though there are some indoors exhibitions and plants, but the highlight of the visit is walking around the amazing and beautiful gardens, seeing the animals (who are not kept in cages like in a zoo), enjoying the water lakes, with or without renting a pedal boat, and taking a million pictures with the great scenery. Entrance fee was VERY reasonable. a great place to hang out in if you like plants or have small children. definitely a fun half a day.

Yelp
great place to be! best in spring while everything is grouing. so many colors, so many flowers! must see
