On the Grid : Palmer Burial Ground

"Surprisingly more tranquil than it is morbid, Palmer Burial Ground offers a permanent place of rest for some original Fishtowners and has been called one of the “quaintest, quirkiest cemeteries in Philadelphia.”" - The Heads of State

Crowded but quaint. Rest in peace to all who lay here. A very nice cemetery and is peaceful to walk in.

I believe Palmer cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Philadelphia. There's a lot of history there! Has old, loose & uneven cobblestone walkways, so be careful. I was lucky to catch it open today. I don't remember seeing any hours posted.

Had to jump the fence to get in with my trusty step stool. Not exactly a place to celebrate but I am very grateful to the caretakers of the cemetery and the volunteers that make sure the veterans have flags on their graves

This cemetary is hidden in a neighborhood and is very old in the fact that alot of people that are burried here were the ones who founded fishtown and kensington. There is revolutionary war heroes located here and all diffrent war vets too. Theres lots of tall old trees on the grounds and lots of diffrent types of grave markers with statues and all sorts of crypt looking grave stones!

Now, the Palmer Cemetery isn't as nice as say St. Louis in N'Orleans or Pere-Lachaise in Paris (actually, what is as beautiful as that?), but it really is a cool cemetery. It's not that big, but it does have some nice stones. And then there's the markers that are just small wood crosses, which look man made and probably are, with the names carved into the cross wood. I imagine that these are there because that's what the people could afford. See, if you live in Fishtown, you get a free plot in Palmer Cemetery! Awesome, I've already picked out my spot, so no one take it. It's near the corner where the ground rises up to a small mound. Nice! But, yes it really is a neat place to walk around or through on a brisk fall day. Maybe even have a picnic like the good old days.
