"Many aspiring travelers love to start their road trips with a bang. However, if you’d rather start your vacation with a Bing, you’ll need to head to the Siouxland to visit the home of Palmer Candy Company. For more than a hundred years, Palmer Candy has been making Bings, a regional chocolate, nougat, cherry, and roasted peanut treat. Like a phoenix, or a very gooey chocolate, the history of the Bing was birthed in flame. Family patriarch Edward Cook Palmer moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1878, after his Michigan home burned down, and he bought a wholesale grocery business after arriving. Originally specializing in fruit, but by the 1900s, the company diversified into candy. The 1920s were a time of candy bar experimentation, and the origins of the Bing are murky. But in 1923, a member of the company had the inspired ideal to add a nut hash to the top of their nougat and chocolate candy ball, and the Bing was born. Originally produced in maple, vanilla, pineapple, and cherry, it is the cherry Bing that is best known today. The Bing proved so popular that the company eventually focused all its efforts on the candy business, and the fruit company closed its doors in 1969. Bings were originally sold individually, but by the 1960s, inflation had doubled the price of most candy bars from five to 10 cents. As inflation threatened to increase the price of the Bing further, the Palmer company decided to offer more Bing for the buck. The unusual shape of the Bing meant that it would be too big to fit in a vending machine if enlarged, so each package would instead contain two Bings. The product was renamed the Twin Bing in 1973. The change was a hit, and the two familiar mounds of chocolate became a grocery staple, even celebrating its 100th birthday in 2023. Today, the company is still owned by the Palmer family, and every Bing is still made by hand, making it likely the biggest selling hand-made candy bar in the world. Although you can purchase them at convenience stores across the upper midwest and into the Rocky Mountains, it is at Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe where you can get the fullest Bing experience. You can purchase Twin Bings, King Bings (three lumps!), and a variety of flavors, along with other bulk candies produced by the venerable company that account for much of its revenue. A small museum recounts an Oompa Loompa-free history of a working candy factory, and matching Bing gifts are available, from earrings to salt and pepper Twin Bing shakers. None" - ianlefk

While we all may hold some special memories tied to the sweet purchase of some sweets, we may not all have had the chance to visit a genuine candy store. Complete with bins filled with lovely confections, a gleaming case of assorted flavored truffles (sugar free available) and a well stocked specialty food market (spreads, cheese, oils, pasta), Palmer’s Candy has something special waiting as a treat, gift, or just wanting to pick up a little something to make an ordinary occasion a special one. Protip: Elevate your lunch sandwich with some delectable spreads found here: Pepper Peach Jelly and Cinnamon Pear are just a few of the options.

What an amazing place. The people are so friendly, the store is immaculate, the parking is good, and... the candy and chocolate are amazing! Please stop in if you are in the area. It really is a special place. I also like the history of this company and knowing that some places can survive.

My husband has loved Twin Bings since he was a child. We were road tripping from Texas and stopped in! Great selection and awesome customer service. Definitely worth the stop!

We spent$105. on candy. It was all good except spent $6.90 for chocolate covered peanuts with carmel. They are so hard you can't even bite them. The service was outstanding. Next time I will ask for a sample.

Such a fun, festive shop! Hundreds of different types of candy as well as a huge selection of fresh nuts. Delicious handmade chocolate treats are impossible to resist. There is also a gourmet food department with an assortment of cheeses, sauces, dips and mixes and all kinds of cooking gift ideas. You can put together a gift basket for any occasion. The friendly and helpful employees are always close at hand to assist with anything you need. You can also check out the history of Palmer Candy as there are photographs and old equipment on display.

Love stopping at Palmer Candy. My favorites are the orange slices, and now they have them in dark chocolate! And you always have to grab their famous Bing candy bar.

🍬🍭🍥🍡🍬🍭🍥🍡🍬🍭🍥🍡 Love keeping traditions and historical places going. Extremely busy on a Saturday afternoon. Parking could use an overhaul. Like anything overpriced at this point in the nation.

Yelp
I had read about twin Bing candy and I had never had it before, so I had to swing buy to buy some! I ended up buying some, and more. I ended up buying ~20 lb of frosted peanut butter pretzels, which were on sale due as they were "seconds" aka slight manufacturing mistakes. Still delicious though! There's smaller quantities on sale too if you don't want to go all in. There's a museum-type area in the back where they show the old candy machine that fueled the original candy shop, and a TV showing how the candy was produced. Of course, the production is now modernized. There's a large bulk section for candies, and a candy counter. The service I received in the shop was impeccable. If I'm ever back in town, I'll make sure to diet a bit before returning to this shop. It is excellent.

Yelp
Wow! What a trip back in time this is. Such a fun store to explore. The old equipment from the original factory make it feel like you're visiting a museum. I've loved Twin Bings since I was a kid so it was interesting to learn the history behind them. Monica was so kind and answered all of my questions. The assortment of candies new and old is unparalleled. Love the way they've preserved the old time candy shop feel. Even down to the tiles on the floor. Very cool place.

Brandon C.

Yelp
Yes, I do recommend this business! I just adore the Palmer Candy Co. It has the old time candy shop experience most people don't get to enjoy these days!

Chrissy G.

Yelp
The ambiance of the place is antique and well preserved. I enjoyed walking through and reading the plaques about the different machinery used throughout the years in the factory. I was hoping for a little better handmade selection and remembered twin bing was a pretty big deal and mass produced. I spent probably an hour or more in the store looking at all the products and history. I loved the room with the localy sold goods and wares. I purchased a handful of things for gifting season coming up. All in all a spectacular visit I plan to repeat when work brings me this way again.

Yelp
Love going here to get super fresh local made candies. Always friendly staff and super helpful.

Allen S.

Yelp
Palmers Candy has an excellent selection of memorable candies from yesteryear. Excellent staff. They also have the Twin Bings

Emily Q.

Yelp
Very fun stop in Sioux City. Staff were friendly and helpful and the selection of food, candy and chocolate was amazing. It isn't a long stop, 45 minutes will be enough but an easy place to get into and out of if you need something to do. All ages will enjoy it.

Fox E.

Yelp
So many great foods and desserts in America, all of them are in the Palmer your hand. These, though, are a shelf stable snack that I don't really enjoy too much. They make chocolate covered raisins and peanuts and stuff, and both Barbi and I think they taste a little bit too American, and not our favourite. Still a good company though.

Cheryl S.

Yelp
Fresh candy! Gotta have a Bing (or two)! Lots of unique choices! Chocolate covered peanuts are amazing as well! Your sweet tooth will be happy! Can't go wrong here!

Michelle S.

Yelp
Not much to do in Sioux City Iowa however this was a nice surprise. My husband and I didn't get a lot of candy but what we did get was good. Some was sugar free with peanut butter and chocolate!

Lyn B.

Yelp
Fun stop on our trip! Delicious candy and treats! Loved seeing the antique candy-making equipment.

Jessie S.

Yelp
This place is SO cool. You feel like you're stepping back in time when you enter. It's worth a trip just to look around; seriously! The candy selection is amazing. I go and bag up on sour stuff, and then go buy a couple of their home made Reese's cups. Their fudge is to die for...try the peanut butter! They gave what they call 'speciality foods' as well. Tons of sauces, jams, hot sauce, spices, cheeses, etc. I don't buy those items much, but they're there. They do gift baskets and always have seasonal stuff. Not a lot of parking. It's a PokéGym for all you Pokémon Go players!!!

Kenn A.

Yelp
This is a must stop if you are in Sioux City. You will not leave empty handed, something for everyone. Spend some time walking around the store check everything out. The employees are friendly and have a lot of knowledge of the history of the place. If you want any of the bulk candy, they will assist you. One stop and my diet is done.

Nancy H.

Yelp
Perfect place to grab gifts for that sweet tooth in your family! Good For: souvenirs, gifts, Twin Bing

Eric P.

Yelp
They have tons of candy people, I dunno what else you need out of life. I tried a "twin-bing" for the first time ever, and was filled with such joy that I solved world peace. Then I realized that you can't get twin-bings in my town, and I unsolved world peace. Then I found out you can order them and have them sent to your house, but I was so exhausted from solving then unsolving world peace that I decided to just order another box of twin-bings instead.

Lori R.

Yelp
As usual this place is amazing. There is something for everyone (sweets - chocolate to gummy bears) cooking sauces, cheese) and it is all yummy.

Slash M.

Yelp
The Bing candy! Palmer brings back fond childhood memories. I grew up in Sioux City and indulged my sweet tooth every Saturday. They didn't have a factory store when I lived there, I envy the residents on that. The store is amazing. And the candy is so fresh you'll think it was homemade. Can't wait for the next road trip to Sioux City!

Michelle D.

Yelp
Palmer's is amazing! It's a fun store with friendly staff and more candy than you could imagine. I am about to make a 90 minute drive one way to make some purchases for my upcoming holiday trip with family! If I'm hooked-I need them hooked too!

Lindsay B.

Yelp
Always enjoy stopping in when I am in town. My kid loves stopping in as well... was the hi light of her day today!

Michelle T.

Yelp
This is a great place for getting a gift. They have pre-made gift baskets of varying prices and ages. I got a $15 gift basket for my daughter's friend's birthday party and the little girl loved it. They also have a large selection of candy to pick from. My kids like to pick out a variety of candy in their own bag. I recommend the fancy truffles in the glass counter. They're about $3 each but you only need one and your sweet tooth is satisfied.

Courtney L.

Yelp
Palmer Candy is a great local candy shop! Their prices are very reasonable/inexpensive. The store front is always well kept and clean. Now about the sweets, A-Mazing! They have this caramel corn that has milk chocolate on it and it's drizzled with white chocolate too--oh it's soo good. If you're in the neighborhood check it out.
