I have had 2 experiences with food that was not even remotely close to the hype around it. The first was Chicago deep dish pizza and now this. I frankly had never heard about them until recently from a good friend who suggested to catch up there for lunch whenever possible. To be fair, Pancham Puri has been around for a long time since 1848 as it mentions in the display and they have a loyal base. You will never ever find yourself able to just walk in and find a table. It is located s 3 to 4 minute walk outside the heritage VT or CST terminus as it is now called. Ask anyone and they will point it out to you - it really really famous. The first time I tried to get and that too on a holiday there was a serpentine queue to get in. I gave up. I finally got my chance and that happened because I showed up well past lunch hours. The restaurant is popular count for people employed in office near the area and there are plenty of those. Think of eating here only if you are sure you can wait at least 30 mins and can hold off on your hunger. I just tried the basic puri and aloo sabzi - with gravy and without gravy. Surprisingly the food was so ordinary and the dry potato sabzi was cold. Did not expect this from a place where there are so many people all the time. The restaurant is cramped and is always bustling and noisy - both patrons and staff. The menu is all vegetarian and mostly centred around different types of puri and vegetables and yes rice too. The most popular it seems is the Pancham thali which is fixed set meal with the about 4 vegetables, puri, sweets, raita etc all. This is not a place for a leisurely meal - you order quick, eat, pay and put you go. The place is cramped - can’t blame them it’s where they started given their heritage and long standing reputation it’s not like they can move elsewhere. Also you have to take whatever spot they give you and be ready to have your meal cheek by jowl with strangers. I am not saying it like it’s a bad thing. It’s just how it is. And if you are a big group of 4 or 5, be ready to wait for an hour. Not kidding you. There is only one Pancham Puriwala and thus one is it. To me it was a letdown. A couple colleagues told me it’s not worth it anymore as the taste is not what it used to be. I don’t know how it tastes before but can tell you for sure I have had much better puri bhaji at places I don’t even remember the names of. For the sake of the experience you may try it once. I did not eat here for the ambience but to experience the flavours and the history of the really famous eatery. Boy was I disappointed…..
