How a D.C's Sleepbox Compares to Japan’s Famous Sleeping Pods - AFAR

"A 2018 micro-hotel in Whistler that introduced pod-style lodging to Canada, offering mixed-gender and female-only options at about $50 per night; each pod includes a guest-facing infographic explaining amenities, and the design deliberately avoids the space-age aesthetic of traditional Japanese capsule hotels in favor of a different, less futuristic vibe." - Mike Arnot

Can’t get a better location, must be just over 150m from the lifts, right in the heart of the village. Staff are great, to name a few, Josh on front desk, Olivia,Fran,Taylor I could go on. The place hosts a lot of trivia and bingo evenings, where you can win free prizes. It’s a real bonus, whether it’s free drinks, a shot ski, or a free nights stay. The only thing the place is missing is a small area for guests to heat up their own food. (Perhaps a microwave) I did know this wasn’t the case before I booked it, but it didn’t stop me booking as there’s plenty of great places to eat nearby. Pods are comfy and clean. All the staff do a great job of keeping the areas tidy. Place is very social, lots of other solo travellers to talk to and go out on the town!

Google
Location is perfect, the pods themselves are quite spacious, and despite many people being packed in each suite, it is surprisingly quiet. Be sure to bring flip flops, but if you do not have any then you can purchase them at the front. Check-in is very speedy and does not require the assistance of the staff, but I do wish they would automate the process for picking up a parking pass. The staff were all very nice and welcoming. I am giving only 4 stars mainly due to the cleanliness of the place. With it being a pod hotel it is understandable that it may not be the cleanest and is most likely dependent on who is staying there, but I saw gum on the bottom of the shower bench and a poop stain in the toilet that seemed to be there my entire stay.

Google
When it comes to pod hotels, this one's very well done. Especially since this one also has to deal with everyone's ski gear as well, on top everything else. The rooms and pods were nicely divided up, and for such a small place, there was surprisingly a lot they managed to pack in here at Pangea. It's a prime location in Whistler as well, walking distances to the lifts!

Google
The pod concept sounds cool but the reality was terrible. As a couple we felt extremely uncomfortable. There is no privacy and no way to create distance from other guests. Groups of foreign individuals repeatedly harassed our pod and staff did nothing to manage it. Every day guests are forced to leave from 1 to 3 pm for mandatory cleaning yet our pod was never cleaned and garbage was not taken out. The disruption continued until about 4 30 pm which ruined our afternoons. We ended up leaving one night early on December 31 around 10 pm because we had genuine concerns for our lives. Other guests were heavily intoxicated and openly brandishing weapons. For the price this place is shockingly low quality. I will never stay here again and strongly advise couples to avoid it.

Google
They dont check ID!!!!! I booked this place ia Priceline thinking it was a hotel, but it turned out to be a pod-style hostel. The pictures on the site were very misleading, the first 15–16 photos showed trains, traffic views, restaurants, drinks, and food , not the actual rooms. Only later in the gallery did it become clear what the sleeping situation was. When we arrived, we realized it was not a standard hotel room but a pod, just a small spot to sleep. As someone for whom English is a second language, I didn’t realize “pod” meant this type of setup. This should be clearly stated and shown earlier in the listing. While the place was clean, there was no real privacy or sense of safety. No ID was checked, they only asked for a name, phone number, and email, which didn’t make me feel secure. As two women traveling alone, we did not feel comfortable staying here and left within 15 minutes, booking another hotel instead. I paid $100 for that night, but it wasn’t worth it. Especially when, the very next night (9/21/24), I was able to book a nice, clean suite hotel with a pool, jacuzzi, and spacious room for only $116. Compared to that, this pod stay was far too expensive for what it offered. My suggestion to Priceline, please update the listing description, include photos of the pods upfront (picture 1, not picture 20), and make it very clear that this is a hostel with pods, not a standard hotel room. This would help travelers like me make an informed decision, especially those not fluent in English.

Google
Stayed there few times now and love it close to the center of village , if book directly you get free drink too! Parking is $40 if needed. Need to bring your own lock , offer locker too , love they have events weekly so it's a friendly vibes

Such a cool first time Pod hotel experience. The pods were very clean. So nice to have all of H wing for our group. Great location in Whistler village.

Yelp
I did not stay at this hotel, but we had brunch at The Living Room within the hotel. It was unexpectedly wonderful! The food was so fresh and the avocado toast was so simple but somehow it was one of the best I've ever had. It was super fresh and the staff was very accommodating. Typically the toast isn't toasted and they don't do sweet potato fries early, but the staff was accommodating and that was greatly appreciated. The sweet potato fries were baked and they were addicting. The coffee was just as good! I'm a self proclaimed coffee connoisseur and I approve of their lattes! My husband and I both didn't feel heavy after eating, which is often the case when we eat out due to the processing of food. This was definitely quality food. You do seat yourself, scan the menu and order at the counter. They do bring out the food to your table and pickup your plates afterwards. The food also came out pretty quickly! 10/10 will be returning!!!

Yelp
Loved the experience here! The staff were very sweet and kind. We didn't have any big expectations going in, but enjoyed the vibe that was presented from the street outside all the way to the table. Whatever expectations we had were exceeded with the food though Solid!

Yelp
For starters. If you're worried about staying here because you think it's like a backpackers hostel with a bunch of people in their early 20's don't be. This place is such a mixed bag. I love it. I just finished having drinks with a guy who had to be at least 40yrs old and his dad. It was great. Now with that out of the way here's my review. You can't come here expecting it too be a hotel; not even a standard lower end hotel like a Best Western or Travel Lodge. And I feel like that's why some people gave it a bad review. This place is different. It's not quite hostel, not quite hotel. But for $54 a night, you can't beat it. It's literally in the centre of the village. The area right by Araxi and Starbucks and all that. The pods are spacious, clean, and have everything that I need (power outlet, comfortable bed, fan, privacy). Too me, that's all you really need when you're in Whistler. You really shouldn't want to spend most of your trip indoor in such a nice town. Also, for you drinkers out there it has all day happy hour for guests and a DJ that plays from day to night. What I like most about this place is the chance of meeting people. You don't get that at a hotel and I feel like one of the best parts about travelling is meeting others. Would I stay here again? If I'm coming with friends I would.

Yelp
This is honestly one of the cutest hostels I've been to. Got a complimentary drink and also enjoyed breakfast! Pods were clean and cute, it's definitely a younger crowd atmosphere. I would stay here again. It's in the center of everything within walking distance. Worth the price as well.

Yelp
Pangea is not a hotel but not yet a hostel. My first thoughts about this labelling was 'why?' If they'd labeled themselves as a hostel they would really be the best hostel around. If you try to look at it through an elevated lens past the accommodation of your typical hostel that's when you start to see some kinks. Overall our time at Pangea was exceptional for a place that really at the price you'd think it would be worth only a bed, but the accommodations are nice enough that hanging around the common areas is actually very pleasant. We'd come back! PROS: Friendly and helpful staff A patio space is available to spend time outside and they serve you drinks there Super cheap and delicious food options Super cheap and diverse drink menu Cozy mattress. Our pod felt nice and spacious despite being very small. We had the side entrance pod which is slightly larger than other pods - good prices for central in the Village even in peak season - extremely clean. Very impressive - Multiple single stall bathrooms!! Great for privacy - Nice and quiet because they've split up the pods into 'areas/dorms'. I hardly heard a peep other than the door being super heavy when people went in and out. - Despite the cafe turning into a bar at night when you go up to your room you don't hear a thing - Great communication with guests via text message notifying you of the specials of the day. You can also text staff for any house keeping or toiletries and they will bring them to you CONS: No microwave or fridge. Not even a kitchenette. This really limits your food options because you cannot store anything to eat. Room/pods is inaccessible from 1pm-4pm. Sucked coming back from a day at the spa to not be able to get a change of clothing. You need to plan ahead for this. Very minimal storage space for your belongings inside the pod. Most of our stuff was placed beside our bed rather than the offered storage locker, which would most likely be used for only money pouch and passport Pangea does not offer lock rentals for their lockers Their chef was away so we were not able to order any lunch options, they seemed short staffed which is a problem plaguing all of Whistler right now. It gets a bit stuffy in the pod at night, but nothing too bad

Yelp
This hotel was a wonderful experience! I was only here for one night but I was extremely happy with everything. The pod had a bed that was equivalent to the size of a queen size bed. Inside the pod, you have an outlet to charge your electronics and a ventilation fan. Outside of the pod, there is a separate shower, toilet and a mini vanity room. Price- It's reasonable considering how good the location is and how clean the facility is. Prices do fluctuate depending on dates for example one night might be $10-20 more than another (that seems to be the difference between weekend and weekday) Location-5/5 It is the perfect location because it is in the Whistler Village and when you walk down, there are a lot of stores. You're about a 5-10mins walk to the bus stop! This bus area is for public transit and where you're dropped off if you took Epic-rides! Service-5/5 The staff was extremely nice to me. I mostly interacted with Alvin! When I told him about my foot injury, he tried his best to make my stay as comfortable as possible which I really appreciated. He was also happy to answer any questions/concerns I had! Thank you Alvin for everything! Cleanliness-5/5 it was so clean! I didn't see a speck of dust and I'm someone that likes to look carefully at window frames, room corners and I also have a tendency to wipe surfaces before I put my stuff on it. My pod passed my cleanliness test! Wifi- 5/5 no password. It is very quick and stays connected Advice: It gets very cold at night and there isn't enough to cover yourself so make sure you ask reception for a duvet! Bring a lock for your luggage because the pods are covered by a curtain and for extra protection to make sure others can't open your luggage (gives you a piece of mind). There is a small storage that closes in your pod but space is very small (like the size of McDonald's takeout bag). Con: The ventilation fan is extremely loud so you might have to go to reception for complimentary ear plugs or turn off the fan. There is no elevator so going up to your room or reception can be challenging. I had a hard time going up the stairs to reception at 2nd floor because I could barely walk so if you have mobility issues, staying at this hotel will be extremely extremely challenging! Recommend? Yes because staying in a pod is such an interesting experience plus this hotel is close to everything! Make sure to compare the prices on the hotel's official website and on other booking sites!

Yelp
This review is for the Living Room @ Pangea Pod. We had a pretty decent breakfast at the Living Room at Pangea. Super cool vibe up there and the food was fast and the staff was great. Definitely would go back next time for drinks!

Yelp
It's Valentine's Day and everywhere is booked except the Living Room at Pangea. I quickly glance through some brief photos others have posted and decided to try it since we were pretty much out of luck for a sit down restaurant. Well it's located inside the Pangea Pod Hotel which looks pretty cool, like an upscale hostel, it's bustling with international visitors and music is pumping from the lounge area, which by the way is also the restaurant. When you walk into the restaurant space it feels like a bar with lights in the ceiling and colourful accents everywhere and windows all around gives every seat in the space a window view. It has an upbeat cool vibe to it and the waiter we had was very friendly and helpful. We ordered the warm spinach salad with roasted eggplant and butternut squash as well as a gluten free flatbread with prosciutto and arugula. Both items came within 10-15 min of arriving! The salad was fantastic as was the flatbread. They have the best gluten free flatbread Ive ever had, not tough or dry or chewy or cardboard like! Ingredients are fresh and well done. If you ever have a hankering for a quick bite and hand crafted cocktails in a casual but 'Euro' funky ambiance, come here, it's also reasonably priced! These two items were just perfect for two people to share. If you're really hungry, order another flatbread!

Yelp
Terrible customer service. We booked 2 nights back in August 2018 right at the hotel while we were camping in whistler. We thought we wouod do some skiing in december 2018. We were so excited to stay there and was never told it was non-refundable. We can't stay there now because other plans have come up and went to cancel giving them over 10 days notice and they told us it was not refundable because we booked online which we didn't. WE booked it right in their lobby woth the help of their staff We are still fighting to get our $700 back. Terrible way to do business and no excuse not to provide a refund. Be aware if you book there to get their policies in writing because they don't tell you anything AND never provided a confirmation. To top it off they made us feel.like we were not be honest with them?

Yelp
I stayed at the Pangea Pod Hotel for four nights. I had such a great experience! The pod itself is cozy but had tons of room for myself and my things. The location cannot be beat as it is right in the centre of the village! There was always something happening in the Living Room and I met tons of cool people. The staff were super friendly and helpful (shoutout to Steff for helping me store my things on my last day in Whistler!) I will definitely return to Pangea the next time I find myself in Whistler.

Flemming K.

Yelp
I have stayed at pangea pod hotel 4 to 5 times over last year or so. Location is perfect few minutes walk to Gondola. There lots of storage for bike, snowboards ski in seperate area called toy bix. Pods are decent size , enough to get in and out and for good sleep . Anything you need front desk is able to assist - if it's earplugs or hair dryer . Best part of the pod is the living room where you can mingle with fellow travelers , while having drinks from the bar. As a added bonus guest get all day happy hour . Alvin and his team does a great job making sure everyone has best time possible . They treat not only as guest but part of family . I highly recommend pod if you like fun atmosphere and enjoying meeting new people.

Yelp
Overall a good experience. Kind of loud and tight quarters but clean and got the job done. They charge extra for a lock for your locker so be prepared for that.

Yelp
Clean, cool, modern, friendly staff, very easy check in. Great! Until you get to your room at night, which is a dorm that will sleep about 20-30 people, the door is banging closed all night long, people treat it more like a hostel, there was a full blown rave on downstairs in the bar that we could feel the vibrations all night from our bed. I think the letter S was broken on the keyboard when they made the name because there is no difference this and a hostel, maybe there is more privacy in hostels....besides a bar downstairs.

Kim V.

Yelp
You never know what to expect when staying a place where you're sharing a space with strangers but if the customer service at the hotel is good, you won't have anything to worry about - which is absolutely our experience with this hotel. Had some bunk neighbors be loud at 4am and sent a quick text to the hotel for help. They replied immediately and the situation was handled in less than 5 mins. Overall, amenities, cleanliness, ease of use, comfort, location, convenience, and look of this hotel has been amazing! We stayed in the side pod for two people. Surprisingly spacious. I was worried that we brought too much luggage with us but it all fit with room to spare. Plenty shelving, and outlets inside. Bathroom, shower room, changing room and plenty of sinks around. I never had to wait to use a thing. They really thought of everything and love that everything we need is right there, and they're always ready to help with anything with a quick text. Would 100% stay here again.

Rickets44 R.

Yelp
Absolutely ridiculous cancelation policy. Due to our babysitter canceling we had to cancel our trip( not even last minute) We would of been ok with the 50% refund but since we are working parents and could only get away for one night and they also minus 1 night stay so they will fully charge us. We will never recommend nor will we bother trying to make another reservation at this place.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay here. The first night we were assigned a pod upstairs and we ended up sweating through the night because it was too hot. But the next day I told the front desk about our situation and they kindly moved us to a cooler pod with extra storage at no cost. I was really impressed with how they handled the situation- it was an immediate solution. The girl at the front desk was such a good sport about it and because of this, I would return. I've never stayed at a hostel before and with this being my first impression, I would stay again. Pangea pod is a nice place to rest your head at night, nothing too sophisticated, just a bed and a little bit of storage. But the location is the best for the price. I'll be back soon!

Heath M.

Yelp
Wow! A small pod hotel - sure, if I stretch my legs out too far they'll end up in someone else's bed, but for the price, what a deal! Wait, what? It's not a good price? For the same price as any other hostel (not including parking, which is almost as much as the price of a bed), or even a shabby hotel room, you end up with about 1/25 of the space as a normal hotel or even hostel room. The best part is that you don't have to worry about having any privacy - the lack of a door ensures you're about as safe as sleeping on the street, albeit a little warmer. I looked at staying here and opted out as soon as I saw the lack of value. Sorry, but you're not a pod hotel if you're not providing an affordable place to stay for people. My understanding what that this was the point of this establishment, instead of just being a lower calibre hotel room taking advantage of people. A waste of a concept, not to mention real estate. Good luck.

Sabrina S.

Yelp
Great brunch place!its open till 1 pm for brunch which is great. Bennies and waffles are the best here. Servers are very polite, friendly and go an extra mile. Nice view from glass windows there of the village.

Ki S.

Yelp
We visited their restaurant and it was a good location for ppl watching from table by the window. Terrible waiter service, however, ignoring our table and delivering food/drinks super slowly. At the end it was uncomfortable surprise that they changed 17% tip in the bill even though it was just two of us visited the restaurant. Bad customer service.
