A Nature Lover's Guide to Camping in Redwood National and State Parks

"The Panther Flat Campground, the most popular in the Smith River NRA, is on a flat shaded by trees about 50 feet above the Middle Fork of the Smith River. Two short paths lead from the picnic area to river swimming holes."

Excellent, well maintained National Forest campground near the Smith River. Clean restrooms with pay shower. Some sites will accommodate an RV up to 30 feet, such as our 30' travel trailer. The current hosts worked hard at keeping the campground nice. My only minor complaint is that I wish they allowed reservations all year, as our trailer length makes planning ahead often less stressful.

We really enjoyed our stay at Panther Flat Campground. The swimming hole on the Smith River is deep and water is very cold. Very refreshing to take a swim in. The campground itself is very clean and well taken care of. Campground has showers available and the bathrooms are well maintained. The sites have a good amount of space and are separated enough between campers that you feel like your not camping right on top of another site. Be mindful that at certain times there are fire bans in effect and this means no campfire or charcoal bbq’s. Overall I highly recommend this campground for a family vacation spot.

Nice place to camp. Lots of trees to help keep it cool on hot days. Good swimming hole pretty crowded but nice for swimming. They need to develop another trail the the first swimming hole could not find a way to it. The trail was washed out. Was a bummer no running water other than the flush toilets this season but the camp host had a large tank of water we could fill our containers with.

Lots of "first come, first serve" spots at $15 a night. Campground Host was friendly and took good care of the camp. Real bathrooms were available and limited fresh water, and possibly coin operated showers (though I didn't personally use the shower, it looked nice and clean). Each camp spot was clearly marked with a paved parking spot, picnic bench, and firepit. Lots of available loose wood to use for fires and most spots had lots of trees between the next one so you felt pretty secluded. The river is right there and made for a nice walk. Best to drive a truck or car, but RVs and trailers for easily into most spots too.

Beautiful place, great swimming hole. However, the road noise was a bit much, as was the noisy camp host, he should lay off the crack!.Wish I would have had blinds to close!

Nice campground that's well maintained right off the highway. Has hot showers, drinking water and plenty of animal proof trash cans. Best part is the Smith river next to the campground, it has an awesome swimming hole with crystal clear water that's nice and cold.

Very quiet area next to the Creek that runs to Smith River...you can hear the sound of the rushing water from the campsites. There are two shower houses which are coin op/quarters only Spray nozzles could use some work but water was hot quickly and was a good length of time for just $1. No hookups but nice spurs wide enough for my 34' TT and my 3500 Truck, with fire pit.

Yelp
This campground was truly a sweet place to stay a few nights. The camping spots were spacious, surrounded by trees that in the evening create a beautiful filtered light. You can walk down to the Smith River to a clear, cold swimming hole - perfect for the hot day we spent there. The bathrooms were sparking clean. The campground offers flush toilets and quarter operated showers. Make sure you bring cash if you haven't already paid online, and bring quarters from Crescent City or Cave Junction. Basically no town in between will give you quarters.

Yelp
Beautiful canopy of green to sleep under, short walk to swim hole and clean facilities. Can't get better than this for $7.50 a night!

Yelp
I spent a week here. I easily fit in a 30 foot travel trailer. This is dry camping, no RV hookups. Nice camp sites, nice bathrooms, the highway noise is constant but tolerable. During the week the campground was about half full. On the weekend it was packed. River access is a short walk and had a nice swimming hole. The area is very shady with all the trees, so my solar panels were useless. That causes me to have to run my generator once or twice a day, and other RVs do the same. So again, some additional noise. But this is a great spot. I camp here every year.

Yelp
Awesome campground. Very wooded, big sites and very secluded from your neighbors. Flush toilets and coin operated showers. Bathrooms were clean and well stocked. The river access was really neat, had a nice swimming hole for the kids. These sites are all dry camping with no hookups. Sites are really tight, be careful if you have a very large Rig. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Vault toilet in the day use area wafted up into our campsite. Disgusting. Camp hosts were very nice and were busy constantly cleaning the bathrooms. They are park volunteers that really deserve a paycheck for what they put up with. Campground swarming with unsupervised children, midnight music and road noise ensure you no rest. The topper was the 1am marital brawl and revving Harley. We will not be back to camp, but if we need a bathroom this is where well stop for sure.

Yelp
Uh. Crowded, smelled like poop near the swim hole. Ok to camp there but we found a better spot further up the road to hang out in the river.

Yelp
PRIMITIVE CAMP GROUND! Not for people who need luxuries like running water, showers or flushing toilets (on that note be sure to have water with you). Stayed here for one evening in August as part of a two week camping trip. First off It was cold. Elevation of 7600 feet, bring warm gear. It was CLEAR! The sky was amazing. Can't possibly describe the beauty, we lucked out and saw a meteor shower that night. The other campers I met were very generous and nice. The ground is hard. You are on a mountain, so bring something to sleep on. Get to the site early so you can catch a spot as with the price tag of $0 spots go fast. The spots themselves are LARGE so they can support a group. Spot 7 was where we slept. It is the highest of all the sites and quite large. Because there is not much for trees up there, noise carries easily unlike in your lower altitude thick growth forests. Not advised for people who have difficulty carrying gear to the spot or not comfortable on rough terrain. The paths, though clear can be a little dangerous to navigate at night even with a flashlight or head lamp. Cost is free. You get quite a mix of people on this site based off the previous reviews. We met some college age students who were great to talk with. Some camp in the parking lot in their cars, others in the campground proper. Some claim it is a UFO hot bead. It has absolutely AMAZING views of the stars. Be aware there are stellar jays and ground squirrels up there. Keep your tent closed or you may have a furry visitor.

Yelp
I liked this campground. It had spacious sites, for the most part. Big metal mesh like picnic tables. The path to the river was nice and when you got to the river it was sooooo beautiful! The camp host was friendly. I was pleased to see Panther Flat had clean bathrooms and Hot coin operated showers! Because it is located off the Hwy, I could hear vehicles noises. Other than that it was very quiet! I definitely would come back to be close to the Smith River and swim!!!!
