Taste Tahitian Cuisine in the Capital of French Polynesia
"This historic market, established in 1847, was the first organized place where farmers and fishermen from surrounding districts could sell their goods and quickly became the city’s culinary melting pot; guided tours offer a crash course in contemporary Tahitian food culture with tastings of local specialties such as saucy chow mein sandwiches and firi firi (a coconut-milk doughnut), historical context about the island’s foodways, and stops at quick-service stalls to sample items like creamy poisson cru." - Alexandra Owens
"Le Marché de Papeete The perfect place to shop for anything and everything from all the islands is the 155-year-old public market called Le Marché. Located two blocks from the waterfront in the heart of Papeete, the market covers two stories. The lower level is filled with hundreds of stands offering Tahitian-made crafts, oils, vanilla, fruits, and flowers. Upstairs is reserved for artisans selling pareos, carvings, Tifaifai wall hangings and quilts, embroidered cushion covers, and other handicrafts. You'll also find a few good shops for purchasing unique black pearl jewelry at fair prices. An on-sitecafeteria serves local dishes. Le Marché isnotjust a tourist attraction, however—it's a proper market where locals come to shop for meat, fish, fresh flowers, and produce and to chat with friends over coffee at one of the patisseries."

I love this market. They have everything you could want for you, family and friends. Great gifts. Great prices and very friendly vendors. They have a fruits and veggie section. A meat area as well. All around good vibes and people. You won’t be disappointed.

We went early as we thought there would be a better selection, but it turns out. We went too early because the shops don't really open until 9 and we were there at about 7:30am. Prices were reasonable. Lots of food choices. We at a chicken salad bowl from a vender that was delicious. Lots of fried food options like egg rolls and doughnuts (not my jam, but it looked amazing if that's your jam. No judgment)

Lots of local vendors for flowers, food, jewelry, clothes, souvenirs and other household items. There are two floors to the mall, many different things to see and do. Great place to kill time while waiting for Ferries or a taxi to the airport for a flight.

Visited early morning prior to flight to Bora Bora - unfortunately many of the stalls were still closed and only some (mostly food and produce) were just beginning to open. We managed to snag some souvenirs and local food (delicious). Sad that we did not get to experience the 2nd floor souvenir stalls.

Papeete Market is a vibrant atmosphere with diverse offerings showcasing local Tahitian culture and cuisine. We visited on multiple days. Our sunday morning visit before 7am was the best and is a must to experience the markets full potential.

Downstairs is a great place to get some fruit, or cheap jewelry, upstairs had lots of souvenirs. Band was playing music while we were there. Overall we really enjoyed strolling through the place.
