7 Destinations in Hawaii Where the Locals Love to Go

"Pescaia also loves Papohaku Beach on the west end of the island. 'Stretching for three miles, this white-sand beach is never crowded, and sometimes you are the only person there,' she said." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Huge beach with no people! Some rocks in the water, and I'm sure it's rough in the winter, but one of the nicest beaches in the state! Bathroom and shower facilities are nice also. There are tons of camping pits all around too.

Google
Beautiful long sand beach. Wind is pretty strong, but they got restrooms, fresh water tree to wash off. When we got there only 3 people for 2-mile long beach. Very quiet and lovely place to watch sunset.

Three miles of white sand and turquoise waters. Tides are strong but well worth the relaxation and tranquility.

Google
Huge sandy beach with good restrooms and lots of parking. Also picnic areas under shade trees. Beach is good for sunbathing or walking but not for swimming or snorkeling. Waves are big and shoreline is big long rocks - looks beautiful when the waves hit them. Lots of room to spread out - on windy days the sand will pelt you. Bring shoes, lots of prickly thorns until you get to the sand.

Huge sand beach with plenty of room. We were the only ones there in the middle of the day, but even with other people, there's plenty of room to spread out. If it's too windy though, the sand is so fine, it will feel like pellets hitting you so keep an eye on the wind. The water is fairly cold, potentially harsh, not always the best to swim in, especially for kids. But at times and in certain areas, it is safe to go in the water.

The beach park is a spacious area with grills and a few tables. Bathrooms are open but stalls have no doors. Showers available to wash off. You need a permit to camp overnight and can get that from Parks and Rec. There's a path to the beach that's easily accessible. Swim at your own risk. The water is known to be quite rough in this area.

Located on an easy drive to the west side of Molokai. It was easily accessible and parking was ample and flat. We were the only people at the beach at noon on a weekday in March. This is not a swimable beach. Watch children closely. The waves are mezmerizing and clearly unpredictable. From the parking lot, it is an easy, short, level walk thru a beautiful shaded park with bathrooms, outdoor shower, picnic tables and charcoal grills. The sand is soft and squishy then slopes down toward the shoreline where the sand is firm and walkable. A few shells lay in the tide wash areas. Be careful of waves that wash away your footing. The colors of blue in the water are beautiful.

Google
Pristine beach with little to no people to be seen. Not a site to snorkel, but a great place to lay and relax, explore the small shells in the sand or play in the waves. Bathroom on site, no shower Please pack your trash out ! Enjoy what nature created. 🌸

Yelp
We went to this beach while visiting Molokai. When we got there, there were only 2 other people there. The whole time we were there, I don't think we saw more than a dozen people. This isn't some little tiny beach either. It's a big, long, wide beach, possibly the largest on Molokai. If you come here, you may not quite have it to yourself, but it will probably be close. How cool is that? Oh, and from here you can see Oahu. The downside? It's not as pretty as other beaches and I hear the current is too strong to swim in. Worth going to if you are looking for something to do in West Molokai.

Yelp
Very wide beach with quite ample parking and room to roam. If you're looking for shade beware the keavi branches strewn beneath the underbrush- spiked little bastards. Very quiet, a bit windy. Too turbulent for snorkeling but a fantastic place to have pretty much to yourself as long as you'd like.

Yelp
Great views of the west side! You can even see Oahu on a clear day. Great facilities as well - parking, trash cans, bathrooms, picnic tables and bbq. Not too far of a walk from the parking lot and very flat if you were going to bring a stroller or wheel chair. Beach itself is pretty but too rough to swim in. There were hardly and people when we went and it is a very large stretch of beach so we were all able to sprees out well!

Yelp
I went to Papohaku Beach to catch the summer sunset and of course, explore as much of the 2-mile stretch (north to south and vice versa) as I could. It almost feels like you are literally in heaven when you visit this fabulous West Moloka'i beach because it is practically never crowded at all and it is so wide open, meaning that you can practically have the beach all to to yourself! Sand is so soft and clean and the views are so unbelievable.

Yelp
The cleanest beach I've ever been to out of ALL the islands I've been to in the Hawaiian Islands. Even the restroom, shower, changing area was absolutely clean. (Wish the toilet stalls had doors tho.) We were the only car in the parking lot. Local deer and turkeys wandering through the beach park.

Melike G.

Yelp
It's longest beach with least crowd you can find anywhere in Hawaiian island. Beautiful colors! Facing Oahu island, it is located on the west of Molokai. It's said to be 3-miles long, but with our fitness tracker's estimate, it is about 2.2 miles. Nonetheless it's a wonderful walk to slow down and have the best down time.

Yelp
One of my favorite beaches. Very nice sand and the view is incredible. Can't really go into the water for parts of the beach and the current is pretty strong at certain parts of the beach.

Yelp
Absolutely huge beach. We were the only car in the parking lot and had the beach to ourselves on a Sunday afternoon. The beach is very wide but it does have some rocky areas so it may not be the greatest for swimming with kids but it is huge in both directions. It is a very nice drive out there as well. A great place to come and relax and spend the day and enjoy Molokai.

Yelp
About a mile or so long of white sand beach with almost no people. Absolutely breathtaking. There were about five other people visible along the stretch when we were there but only as specks in the distance. This is a true, hidden gem but beware! The elements were rough. The ocean, despite being almost totally rock free and swimmable, had QUITE a pull and churn and the wind was so strong that the sand battered our faces and bodies. Still, it was worth the visit and will forever remain one of the most stunning locales I've ever seen.

Yelp
I absolutely loved Papohaku Beach and Beach Park. The beach seems to be endless with smooth sand and the most amazing view. The beach park is green and beautiful ( PERFECT for camping) and the facilities (toilet and shower) for both men and women are great!! We weren't expecting much, but everything was beyond what we could've hoped for. Showers and toilets are clean and well maintained. Watch out for toads during the night though. They seemed to creep out of their hiding spots during the night. Overall, if you're going to Moloka'i and are tempted to stay a night in the outdoors, camp here on the west side of the island! It's beautiful and perfect for a camp-out if you prepare in advance. Remember to shop groceries in town (Kaunakakai) before you head out because there are limited stores once you head out to the west side. There's a small shop in the Kepuhi Beach Resort (you'll see a sign directing you to the right if you drive from east to west). The shop is called "Da Store", but they only have certain supplies, not a huge selection of groceries. NOTE: You have to get a camping permit if you intend to camp here. It's $20 and you can either mail a check to them or pay it in their office. However, be sure to plan ahead, because they are not open in the weekends so if you'll be arriving after opening hours, you have to send the check to them and once they've received it they'll email you the permit.

Yelp
Longest, cleanest, most desolate beach in Hawaii. Few Tourists. Seashells in spring. Beach park with toilet showers BBQ nearby Kaluakoi Villas.

Yelp
My wife and I were literally the only people on the beach. We prefer to enjoy vacations away from other people and Molokai and this beach has been perfect. The wind does pelt you with sand and the riptide was uncomfortably strong but I enjoy a dip in the water to cool off more than I do swimming. It was absolutely beautiful!

Yelp
Terrific, isolated beach away from it all. Truly one of my favorites in Hawaii, and I've been to all islands save for Lanai. On a Sunday morning we saw about 8 people total. The ocean was gorgeous and highly active, a bit too much to swim, but I had a great time regardless. The park area has a great bathroom, plenty of space for camping, and seemingly more grill areas than it could ever need. A true gem.

Yelp
Came here after we landed so we could catch the sunset. So glad we did!!!! The beach is almost empty. I could only see a few people in the distance. We basically had the beach to ourselves. The sand was super soft, the sunset was beautiful, and the beach was gorgeous!!! Definitely recommend coming here for the sunset!
