The Paradesi Synagogue, located in the Jew Town area of Mattancherry, Kochi, is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations. Built in 1568, it stands as a testament to the long history of the Jewish community in Kerala. The term “Paradesi” means “foreigners,” referring to the Sephardic Jews who settled here after fleeing persecution.
The synagogue boasts stunning architecture, featuring intricately hand-painted Chinese porcelain tiles, Belgian glass chandeliers, and a gold pulpit. The clock tower, added in 1761, is a distinctive feature. The synagogue also houses ancient artifacts, including copper plates inscribed with privileges granted to the Jewish community by the local rulers.
Visiting the Paradesi Synagogue is like stepping back in time. Its serene atmosphere, beautiful interiors, and historical significance make it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and cultural explorers. The adjacent Jew Town offers quaint shops and cafes, adding to the charm of the experience. A remarkable spot to understand Kochi’s multicultural heritage!
