After touring through SL for several weeks we were looking forward to expending a couple of days at the beach. We were used to the staff friendliness and good service everywhere we have been, but this hotel felt different.
It isn’t the location, which is great, although I’m afraid that in a couple of years this hotel won’t be standing anymore, the impact of erosion due to the waves, sea level rising and/or building too close to the sea are already visible.
Rooms are good, spacious, clean, comfortable, AC works okay, but there are signs of postponed maintenance, especially in the veranda surrounding the restaurant.
It’s especially the little details that tell the story, the hotel staff, being extremely anxious for a tip. Food in the restaurant is just about okay, the buffet is lukewarm, fruit like mango was probably bought at a discount the day before yesterday. The Sri Lanka section of the buffet, which is something every visitor would be looking forward to, is a poor attempt of local cuisine, no authentic flavor whatsoever. Every single dish has a label “how can I cook something edible while spending as little money as possible”. There is a “fresh” section with grilled fish, prawns, sausages, omelets. etc
