Parador de la Granja

"Start at the top: what will we notice first about this attraction?Parador de la Granja has a regal facade that makes you raise your posture a bit—that is, until you see the tour groups lingering inside. What's the story behind it?The state-run Spanish Parador system, which operates hotels in notable or monumental buildings around the country, is known for known for its excellent dining and hyperlocal sense of place. This property is no different. The building once known as Casa de los Infantes—where the royal princes would stay—is now the main hotel; the adjacent building, a conference center. How are the rooms?Rooms are neither flashy nor extravagant, which helps keep the attention on the historic building—and on Segovia itself. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi—and is the quality good? The internet is free, but the signal strength can vary. What's the food like?Regional Castilian fare is the highlight. If you didn't have a chance to try roasted suckling pig in town, here's your chance. Breakfast (included) has a spread of fruits, meats, hot options, and even cava. Lunch and dinner offer good choices indoors or on the terrace, and there are plenty of options for vegetarian and gluten-free diets. How was the service? The Parador brand offers homespun service from a friendly and engaged staff. Who's staying here?Plenty of conventioneers and tour groups, but all the activity keeps up the energy level in the lobby. How does the hotel fit into the neighborhood? The hotel fits in perfectly with its surroundings. Many guests arrive by car, making it easier to get around. Is there anything you'd change? If it were closer to Segovia, you wouldn't need a car. Any other features worth mentioning?Families will praise the outdoor pool and small spa, and fitness buffs can keep up their routine in the gym. Bottom line: Worth it, and why?Sleeping in a royal residence? Yes, please." - Ramsey Qubein

La Granja was chosen as a destination purely for the gardens, built by Philip V at the turn of the 18th century and influenced by Versailles. There is also a palace attached to the gardens, La Granja de San Ildefonso, but that was closed on Mondays. We were staying at the Parador which was about 10 minutes walk from the palace and gardens.||We only had standard rooms rather than upgrades but they were fabulous - large rooms with spacious bathrooms, a good sized desk, excellent wifi, plenty of sockets and plenty of storage. They did lack a kettle though, which was frustrating as I am usually up around 6AM and like to star the day off with a drink before breakfast. They were very good value too. I'd say English was a bit limited at the hotel with most staff having about by level of Spanish although some were fluent in English but there were no issues and we were always able to work out what each other was saying.||We used the cafe twice in the Parador and the service was excellent each time as well as the coffee and cakes. There didn't seem to be many places open to eat on a Monday evening so we decided to eat in the hotel later, even though the restaurant didn't open until 20:30! We had a fabulous dinner at the Parador, pork shank for Mum, veal tenderloin for Deb and I with what we thought was a vegetable side dish but was actually a soup! Vegetables do seem a rarity in Spanish restaurants. Mum was so stuffed she just had a coffee for dessert, which she struggled to finish, I had a Sergovian cake and Deb had berries marinated in lime and a carrot ice cream. ||The breakfast the next morning (a €21 option) was excellent with a wide variety of cooked and buffet options in a lovely setting. A lovely way to start the day.

A great choice both to visit La Granja and the Palace and Glass Factory, but also see Segovia. Better Parador than the other in Segovia as this one has lots of character. Excellent food in the restaurant. Wonderful, romantic setting. Good pool, gym and spa facilities. Easy free parking very close to the front door. Clean rooms and very comfortable beds and pillows. A fabulous restaurant to try close by is called La Fundicion - Michelin recommended - reservations required.

Visiting La Granja was a highlight of our trip. I had always wanted to try a parador, and we were fortunate enough to select La Granja, which we greatly enjoyed.||First, the building is unique and beautiful. The common areas were stunning and our room was very comfortable from the room size to the well equipped bathroom. Bed was a little firm for my taste, but my husband loved it.||The restaurant was physically lovely, the service was quite good and the food terrific. ||The location is in a small town, but actually offers quite a bit to do nearby. In walking distance in the town itself are the Palacio which is beautiful and not as overrun with visitors as some we visited. The Glass factory was also quite interesting and worth a visit. Also in town are quite a few quaint small restaurants/cafes, and we visited several were authentically local and that we quite enjoyed...using google translate to make things work when English was not spoken but that added to the adventure.||The hotel offers free parking only a short block away, so it's easy to then explore the area with Segovia only a small 20 minute drive. We also visited the Escorial and Valley of the Fallen (each about one hour away) comfortably during our stay at La Granja.||The staff was quite accommodating and pleasant from the front desk folks to the restaurant servers and the housekeeping staff.||All in all, after the bustle of Madrid, our stay at the beautiful parador of La Granja was a wonderful mix of a slightly slower pace but still with plenty to do and see. Highly recommend staying at this property.

I had a bad experience at the parador. The air conditioning in my room didn’t work. I tried getting help from the reception who assured me that someone would come fix it. I returned multiple times and was assured multiple times but no one came, so I had to sleep through the night with no air conditioning. The next morning at reception I was told that there is no technicians that can come as the AC is ‘monitored remotely’. The reasonable thing would have been to move me to a room where the AC works, but no one did anything to remediate the situation.

We stayed one night at the Parador De La Granja and had a fantastic experience. The interior corridors are unique and interesting. The room was clean and plush. Check-in and check-out was flawless. Overall, another fantastic Parador.
