The Ultimate Guide to Bird Monuments

"Many people walk in front of this great monument, which stands nearly 20 feet tall, without pausing to think about the World War I heroes it honors: France’s carrier pigeons. The statue guards the entrance to the Lille Zoo. On it, peace, represented by a woman, liberates a swarm of pigeons. Below her, a shield crushes a snake that symbolizes the enemy. The bas-relief shows soldiers from the front lines using birds as messengers as a last-ditch effort to communicate with the outer world. In 1936, the Fédération Nationale des Sociétés Colombophiles erected this monument in honor of the 20,000 pigeons who served and died during the Great War. It also commemorates the pigeon fanciers who were executed at the hands of enemy forces for their involvement. During World War I, the birds swooped through the skies as part of their missions to transmit key intelligence information. Forces on both sides of the war attempted to control these skybound messengers. In German-occupied territories, civilians were ordered to shoot pigeons to reduce the presence of any Allied avians. One of the most famous French carrier pigeons who served during the Great War was a bird named Valiant. Though he had been badly injured and gassed, he managed to deliver a message from the ill-fated French troops at the Battle of Verdun before later perishing in his dovecot. Later technological advances eventually rendered the battle-bound birds largely obsolete. However, France’s Nord department still retains its strong pigeon fancier heritage, as professionals and amateurs alike still participate in training the birds." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
🥰 Wonderful park, we really enjoyed our time here! The park is massive, you can spend hours here if you want to. We didn’t even see the zoo, so we could easily have spent even more time here if we had the opportunity to. The park is beautiful, lots of people come here to enjoy nature and to run. We didn’t see any water fountains and even though on Google Maps we saw there were public toilets, we didn’t use them, so mind that.

Google
A great urban park, very calm and pleasant in the morning for a stroll with joggers on a Sunday morning. It's bigger than it looks, we didn't make it all the way around.

Google
Park in the walking distance from the Town of Lille. Beautiful and looked after. Great for sports, families, and children.

Google
Pleasant park with a mixture of buildings (citadelle), water (moat, canal), and nature areas (grassland, forest, etc.). The park is free to enter but the zoo is not and the citadelle cannot be entered without prior appointment.

Google
A wonderful green space near the heart of Lille, bordered by canals. Great place to stroll on a sunny autumn day and even see sheep grazing. Hire an electric boat and enjoy it from the water. An essential part of any trip to the city.

Yelp
be careful...i didn't know this was an active military area... i sorta ignored the humvees on the road until this french DND: do not disturb sign stopped me OOPS!~ luckily i found another entrance to the citadel through a park area with that said, i *stumbled* upon my favorite historical building in lille! the famed architect vauban nicknamed it "QUEEN of citadels" ~*~ the expansive grounds is a pentagon shaped built in the 1600s...these days there are loads of forests and riverways that surround/run through this place there are a number of dirt and paved routes that intersect this entire place i just kept thinking all my marathon friends would LOVE to run here~ ~*~ suggested activities: exercise picnic family time~ ~*~ PS. if you're lucky, you might randomly run into the resident yak! ;p
