6 Best Day Trips from Barcelona, and the Itinerary to Know for Each | Condé Nast Traveler

"An hour’s drive northwest of Girona will present a word you never thought you’d see in mainland Spain: volcanoes. Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park actually has 40 of them (no longer active, you’ll be relieved to hear). Volcà del Croscat, the last to erupt, did so (a rather reassuring) 11,000 years ago. The area is still considered seismically active though, with earthquakes in the early 1900s. Scary stuff aside, it makes for a spectacular national park: the ground bursts into giant forested domes and misty valleys, while tiny villages perch perilously on cliff edges. For hikers and cyclists, it’s a dream." - Gemma Askham,Jessica Benavides Canepa

We took a walk through the forests, Fageda d'en Jorda path, and a tour in Castellfollit de la Rocca, great way to combine nature and sites. The bridge over the River Riu Fluvia is a great spot to view the sight of the village built on the rocks

Beautiful lush park with hikes for all levels and distances. The extinct Santa Margarida is a fascinating extinct volcano with a tiny chapel in the crater, do take a longer walk to experience it from different angles!

You can walk, you can run, you can ride, you can fly. Just go out and have fun as this place is waiting for you. We have done 10km around the main volcanos, and it was super pleasant. Nice views. Interesting story, and if you are a fan of volcanos, it's the right place for you.

If you're into nature, peaceful vibes, and something a little different, this park is a must-visit! 🌋💚 Located in Catalonia, it’s famous for its volcanic landscape, lush forests, and charming villages. Here's what you need to know: - **Scenic Views** 🏞️: The volcanic cones (don't worry, they’re dormant!) and surrounding greenery make the trails magical. The **Santa Margarida Volcano** is a highlight – there's even a tiny chapel in the crater! - **Hiking & Trails** 🚶‍♀️👟: There are over 40 walking routes, well-marked and suitable for all levels. Don’t miss the Fageda d’en Jordà – a serene beech forest that feels like a fairy tale. - **Charming Atmosphere** 🌳🍃: Quiet, clean, and incredibly well-preserved. It’s perfect for slowing down and enjoying nature’s beauty. - **Amenities** 🗺️🍴: Maps and trail info are available at visitor centers. There are also picnic areas and lovely local restaurants nearby for refueling – try the local cuisine! 🍽️ - **Family-Friendly** 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦: Great for kids – wide paths, cool forests, and lots of space to explore. Pro tip: Visit in autumn for the gorgeous fall colors. 🍂 Stunning!

If you really want to experience Catalunya, not just the big city mirage of Barcelona, this is one of the palces where you must go. It has a great area of volcanoes and a forest. You can fly with hot air balloons, do segway tours of the volcanoes and hiking.

Not quite what I was expecting. Seems like there were a few hiking trails, but they didn’t grasp me like some of the others in the region.

I'm living here since 2016 and is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Catalunya
