Awesome spot to check off the bucket list! You have to take some hiking shoes. Invest in some if you don't have any. The rocks are very sharp and you need to be careful. The hike is pretty intense and steep for the average person. I'm not used to that type of climb but was beautiful and well worth it. The views are amazing. It has some spots where you can see some steam coming out of the rocks.

I highly recommend exercising prior to the trip so you can hike up through the lava rocks and up to the crater. Be sure to bring some water and snacks as the hike can be hours long but worth while during the entire journey. Also have solid comfortable shoes and be sure to tighten them on the way up. On the way down from the volcano be prepared to get lava sand inside your shoes and socks. This is an all day trip and the sun can be tough so have some type of head gear. After the volcano y recommend horseriding to the old town (San Juan). The entire tour can be arranged by the tour guides at the entrance to the town of Angahuan. The tour may sound expensive but as my tour guide Benito stated, the money goes to help 4 families in town. Benito, who's 60 but in amazing shape did not struggle during the hike, yet my 32 year old body struggled just to make it to the base of the volcano. Once at the crater, the scenery was mesmerizing and at my next trip I plan to spend the night up there.

Long walk to the buried church take a horse if you are not physically fit. Don’t recommend taking the walking short cut to the summit across the lava field.

It is really nice, beautiful country. I rode a horse to the buried town. I had been fascinated about the volcano since learning about it years earlier from Dr. Kathleen Thomas, my Spanish teacher at Hickory Hills elementary school.

Unbelievable place with incredible 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside. Accessible by horse or 4x4 this remote area is kept relatively pristine and serene as a result. A must see if you can make it.

Be aware, it is a tricky dirt road to get there, especially to the volcano cone! We got stuck in the volcano sand taking an inroads path between the church ruins and the volcano! Please make sure you have traction on your wheels and a spare tire, since the rocks on the gravel road are quite sharp. In total from the y-junction following nuevo s. juan, count around 45 minutes to get to either place (so 3 hours of driving from that point to see both attractions), better go early and hike from the church ruins, as it took us all day including short lunch stop from morelia just having 2 short visits (from 8 am to 7.30 pm) The church below the lava is impressive. Unfortunately, there is litter all over the place and people drink and smoke and yell around the area. Also people climb up the church structure, which must be fun but not really good for the the 70 years old building that gets no maintenance. The mountain climb is not so hard, but be ready to slip especially while descending again!
