Five stars all the way! Initially, we had booked online, but preferred 2 days earlier than I could reserve online for. I also was not able to confirm my reservation until less than 8 hours before my tour date as my email account was locked by my provider (being overseas). To our great surprise, we were still able to take the tour, be picked up at our hotel in Paris, and were even offered a complimentary bottle of champagne for our flexibility (amazing!) On to the tour itself...
Trong (the best guide you will ever find!) was right on time picking us up at our hotel, and had amazing knowledge and insights from our hotel locale ( recommending restaurants/shops/etc.) all the way to Reims. His running commentary was very interesting and also informative. Breakfast along the way was a simple but tasty Parisian coffee (or tea) and pastries, but necessary if you are going to go wine tasting.
Once we arrived at Reims, Trong took a few small detours to show us some landmarks that were not mentioned in the tour that made our experience custom tailored to our specific origins.
At the vineyards, Trong gave us a very detailed explanation of the tedious (and back breaking) work required to grow varietal grapes in Reims, why Reims has the optimal soil and conditions for wine-making, and the reasons why champagne can only come from Champagne, France.
We then went to a small family run winemaker (Jean-Claude Mouzon) for our first cellar experience in Reims. We learned how the grapes are transformed into a nice bubbly beverage, which was also a very informative stop in our tour. We then were offered a tasting of the house champagnes, which were very good. Then onto lunch in central Reims.
Lunch was wayyyyyy better than we anticipated, as prepared by a Michelin star quality chef. This lunch was one of the gems in our trip to Paris, and was all inclusive with a few nicely selected choices. Excellent quality and presentation of our choices, including dessert, at a relaxed pace so you can enjoy your time!
Next was the Reims cathedral, which was a very good stop and some Christmas market up during our visit, which added to the feel of the church. The stained glass and gothic architecture should not be missed. Beautiful.
Our last stop on tour was a larger champagne house (Taittinger), as advertised, a larger scale producer with a Roman era chalk cellar, which was nice, but did feel a lot more commercial and impersonal at times. Though we did have a better report with our guide here, as we were touring in the low season, they still shied away from our photos.
Last words, Trong's tour was an excellent experience for us, and others we were with. It's an all day event, so dress properly and be prepared for super cold mornings in Reims (in November), but still very interesting and a great time. Drink the coffee, the champagne, have a great lunch, and don't be afraid to talk to Trong!
