The hotel is well located, and the common areas are beautifully designed, especially if you appreciate The Monocle Magazine aesthetic (which I do). We were upgraded upon arrival, which was a nice touch and much appreciated.
The garden and bar have a great atmosphere, and I enjoyed browsing through the selection of design magazines. Breakfast was good as well.
However, there’s a noticeable gap between the marketing materials and the actual experience, hence my three-star rating.
The main disappointment was the service. We tried the pizza restaurant, which promotes its use of fresh ingredients, but unfortunately, the pizza was the worst I can remember tasting. We waited 40 minutes for it, despite being the only guests in the restaurant. The staff were not particularly welcoming either.
The hotel bar, while beautifully designed, suffers from similar issues. Service is slow and not especially attentive. The ginger tea had virtually no ginger flavor, the pieces hadn’t been cut before being placed in water, and the toast (literally just ham, cheese, and bread) came without a dip. When I asked, the waiter explained they had run out and later brought ketchup instead.
Of course, these are all first-world problems. But at the price point this hotel charges, I believe it is a fair expectation.
