Avoid the Buffet Breakfast!
The Hilton Melbourne Airport now known as the Parkroyal was always a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne Airport, a quiet place to relax and reclaim one's self before heading across to the chaos that is any major airport.
What once was an oasis is sadly little more than a holiday inn, the love and character that was once exuded by the staff seems to have disappeared.
On this busy morning I chose to escape terminal 2 and have breakfast, a treat I was sure I deserved. What I stumbled upon left me cold and disappointed, what was once an award winning restaurant is now simply an unloved collection of buffet dishes with some very simple fair.
Having eaten at this buffet before and in comparison to other leading Melbourne hotels I can simply say this does not deliver, there is nothing luxurious or compelling with what is on offer, a testament to this would be the shear lack of customers.
No longer is there an egg station, or even a chef, grab a waitress and tell them if you want your eggs done anyway but scrambled and they will organise it for you. But what happened to the theatre of watching a chef make your omelette, of having a chat and saying exactly what you want in it, this has gone.
Welcome the pancake machine, no seriously, press a button and out comes some of pancakes. Offcourse automation is a good thing, perhaps also get rid of staff and have the droid from the domain real estate advert welcome guests, at least somebody would welcome guests.
What has gone is the passion, the passion for food, the passion for customers, the passion for success. Today it's an automatic toaster, automatic coffee machine, automatic pancake maker and a few warm dishes you would expect in any good 3 star hotel, but pay $35 and you simply expect more.
In this day and age we expect fresh juice bars, a huge cold selection and artisan baked items not purchased from Woolworths. Today we expect more and today we should get more.
