In Xochimilco, Mexico City, Aztec-Era Floating Gardens Offer a Path to Sustainable Eating | Condé Nast Traveler

"In the southern reaches of Mexico City, densely populated neighborhoods give way to the intricate canal system of Xochimilco Ecological Park, a 400-acre reserve with patches of farmland that appear to float in the water. Remnants of the Aztec civilization that once occupied this region, these “floating gardens” are known as chinampas."

Google
Beautiful, relaxing, and has a museum with lots of information about the prehispanic period. Nice place to get relief from the concrete jungle.

It's a really nice park to take a stroll or have a picnic. It's quite empty and peaceful during the week. There are paths for bicycles as well. The lake has "Trajineras" you can rent for 600 MXN per hour. There's also a museum, but get there before 5 pm, which is the time they close.

Taking a boat trip on the river is very relaxing, and many students rent out the entire boat for parties.

Amazing, visited here several times 50 years ago and now I'm back. Gorgeously manicured grounds, the canals are remnants of pre Colombian times. Just great!

Google
Beautiful place with amazing gardens and spaces to either exercise or have fun with the kids. You can also rent bikes inside the park or take a tour on a trajinera, very traditional of the zone. Just remember that styrofoam containers are not allowed.

Avoid this trap. Save yourself $120 bucks per person on a 2 hr trip, you won't see a thing. Traffic on canal is a joke. We didn't move for 1 hr. 40 boat backup.

This is one of the nicest parks in the city: large bike lanes, and spaces to walk, or host a birthday party or picnic. The channels offer home to various birds, and insects; and offer a nice, relaxing view. On Sunday’s there’s a small market inside with local merchants (food mostly). There are a lot of open areas, so bring a hat and sunscreen.

Google
A wonderful, huge, very well-maintained park. I've been there on the weekend and there are not too many people. Enough benches and picnic tables, and various playgrounds. Not enough signs, I kinda got lost at some point, so make sure you have Google Maps to find your way. Note that it is not a pet-friendly park.

Yelp
This was just so much fun and worth the trip outside the city. You can bring everything you want for the boat - drinks, music, and food. Or you can get it all from vendors before you get on the boat or while you are on the boat. We did both. We brought our alcohol and mixers. Then bought cups and a large bag of ice before we got on the boat. Then on the boat, our driver George, called his friend to make us lunch. We got a whole spread and it was just too much for 6 people, but worth all the bites. We read a review before going that said he didn't trust "water tacos". He was wrong. The "water tacos" were perfect with our solo cups and boat vibes. We took the boat out for 3 hours (600 pesos per hour per boat - you aren't charged by the individual). The 3 hours was a good amount of time. We got to see 3 different parts of the canal. The first was vendor row, plants, food, succulents, etc. Then we moved to party canal. There were so many boats and so many parties. The people watching was great. Lastly we turned to the quiet residential part of the canal. It was cool to get to have all the views during our quick trip.

Yelp
For a DIY day trip to Xochimilco's canals, you can get there by using public transportation (though the journey is long and may require a few transfers), or taking an Uber. If you're not going to Xochimilco on a guided tour, you'll need to hire your own trajinera, or boat. The current going rate for a boat is 600 pesos per hour. Embarcadero Cuemanco is where we went. Apparently Nuevo Navitas is more of a party scene, which I didn't realize, but then we got the whole it's closed scam and our uber driver started taking us somewhere else which is apparently an even bigger scam. If you go to Embarcadero Cuemanco you can ask them to stop at the axolotyl place, it was cool to see the little lizards and they had bathrooms (10 pesos) too. A really nice way to spend a few hours!

Yelp
What a dream to have visited Xochimilco! We got trajineras at around 10am. It wasn't packed yet so we got in right away and rented the trajinera for three horas at $600 hourly . We rented a speaker for 550 pesos hourly. I'm sure we could have negotiated but we choose not too. We thought it was a good price. There are people selling food, snacks and Miches in little boats! We bought food , traditional tlacoyos which were yummy. We got a bunch of quesadillas as well for 1200 total. It was about 10 of us which is about 7 US dollars for each and we were stuffed! Great experience except when having to stop at a restroom. 10 pesos to use and no running water which was uncomfortable. The bathroom was not a great sight. I'm so happy I got to get on a trajinera!

Yelp
This is my third time to visit Xocimilco. Every time I go I enjoy it thoroughly! The boats, the music, the food, the drinks, the shopping
