50 Obscure and Amazing Places to Visit in 2017

"If you only visit one glacier in your life, Perito Moreno would be a good one to pick. It towers above the turquoise glacial water of Patagonia’s Los Glaciares National Park, beaming a blinding white and exuding cold blue hues. Unlike most of earth’s other glaciers, Perito Moreno is still growing. The Perito Moreno Glacier, named for a 19th-century explorer, is currently 19 miles long and rises an average height of 240 feet above the water. Altogether, the glacier covers about 121 square miles. It is part of an ice field located in both Argentina and Chile that is the third largest reserve of fresh water in the world. Part of an area known as Argentina’s Austral Andes, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981. There are viewing platforms a safe distance from the glacier, overlooking Lake Argentino, the glacier’s terminus. You can get pretty close—to the point that you can basically feeling the glacier breathing cold air on your face. If you wait for a while, you’ll likely witness huge chunks of the ice mass fracture off and crash into the water, creating a massive, reverberating roar. There are walking paths that allow you to check out the glacier from a few different vantage points, as well as a boat that takes you on a 45-minute trip around the base. There are also trekking tours that take you out to walk on parts of the glacier itself, surrounded by the beautiful Patagonian scenery of forests and mountains. The Perito-Moreno glacier retreats during the Argentine summer, that is, from December to March (although it may begin to melt earlier), and begins to freeze after the third month." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Absolutely worth making the effort to go and see this. It is a sight to beholden. The walkways are great for viewing, and if you can do a glacier walk or boat trip I would highly recommend

A must see when you visit El Calafate! The glaciers are breathtaking! Pictures truly cannot put into perspective how massive they are! My husband and I walked all the different trails and it wasn’t very difficult. Great way to get more angles of the glaciers while you’re there. It was so fascinating to hear them cracking and see ice fall into the water. *NOTE* be prepared with your money for the tickets. Best check online for pricing before you go. Foreigners pay more, so make sure you’re viewing the correct pricing online.

Established in 1937, this UNESCO World Heritage site spans approximately 7,269 square kilometers. Among its highlights is the iconic Perito Moreno Glacier, a stunning ice formation that stretches 250 square kilometers and rises up to 70 meters above the waterline. The park is also home to the striking Cerro Fitz Roy, a peak that reaches 3,405 meters and offers some of the most awe-inspiring views in the region. How can this be so wonderful?

A beautiful, other worldly place to spend the day. Book passage on the ship for a several hour tour. You will view, in awe, one of the most beautiful and mesmerizing natural wonders Patagonia has to offer. A must see if you're in this part of South America.

An interesting place where you can see farm animals (cows, horses, geese, etc.) that have returned to nature and are coping with this harsh climate.

What an amazing place! The park is incredibly well-taken care of, with safe walkways all around that offer amazing views over Perito Moreno Glacier. The walkways are identified in different colours according to the difficulty of the path (i.e. the number of climbing stairs). There is a big cafeteria with loads of food, hot drinks and toilet facilities. Though it closes at 6pm, so plan accordingly. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance on the same day.
