The covered passages of Paris are legendary and ideal to walk through when it rains. In the classic movie "Sabrina", Audrey Hepburn as the title character suggests that one should "get yourself some rain, not just a drizzle, but some honest-to-goodness rain" on their first day in Paris because "that's when Paris smells its sweetest." Well, it was actually our fifth day in Paris when a torrential downpour arrived, and I'm not sure if it smelled any differently.
Instead of hanging out in the hotel, Jamie W and I explored this 436-foot passage, the first of four we visited in succession and the oldest of the existing passages. It was built in 1799, and its ornate structure attests to its lengthy history. So do many of the shops which reflect vintage specialties like stamps, postcards, and antiques. By contrast, the restaurant options reflect a diverse palate that encompasses both traditional and modern tastes.
