Pasticceria Tonolo

Best pastries we’ve had in Italy by far.. no contest. We grabbed five pastries and two cappuccinos for €11.50, which in tourist-land basically feels like stealing. Service was fast considering the place is packed. If you’re expecting a personal concierge, 2 minute service and a red carpet, you’re in the wrong universe 😂. It’s busy, people... breathe, elbow in politely, and you’ll survive. And here’s a hack: attempt a couple words in Italian and wave someone down like a normal human. Suddenly everything works. Great spot, unreal food. Would 100% come back.

Just adding to the pile of good reviews because the HYPE. IS. REAL. When you walk in and have no idea what's going on and everyone is doing things you know you've stumbled across something truly local and unique. And does it deliver. Just absolutely anything you get here is just good. It's some black magic dust but it's true. The highlight was the cream puffs, which isn't overly sweet allowing all the subtle flavours to come through. Surprisingly the croissant sandwich I had to double back to notice it was baked with cheese. So much subtle flavour. Well worth weathering the storm to get to. Despite being a bit out of the way

The chantilly cream puff is amazing: light cream inside with soft but crisp outside. Personally, I didn’t like the sugar on top because it felt a bit too sweet. I also had the chocolate roll. It was definitely super rich with chocolate but I think a bit too sweet.

The cafe is famous for the cream puffs and rightfully so. They are perfectly tasty and reasonably sized so you can try several. It is a very classic and simple dessert which I do appreciate and love. Pistacchio and dark chocolate were my favorite and only whipped cream was less interesting because of the crunchy sugary glaze on top. There’s certainly a crowd here so you won’t get immediate service even when Venice is devoid of tourists. They work so quickly though, you probably won’t have to wait for too long anyway, just don’t get scared of the long line and a bit of a screaming match to order at the counter.

The best local place to have fresh pastries with coffee. All pastries 1.6 euro. Eat and pay after policy. Fast,understanding and mind staff

Def lives put to the hype! If you like your pastries not too sweet, get the pistachio cream puff. One of my fav desserts/pastries I’ve had in Italy so far! Espresso was great. Also had a ham croissant that I’d probably pass on tho (a little too salty).

Loved everything about this place - quintessential Italian bar. No tables to be seen, just a long glass case & counter that runs the entire length of this corner shop to display all of the yummy-looking pastries and to stand at with your espresso or cappuccino. We went twice since they have so many things to try. The wonderful women working were very friendly and helpful, despite how busy they were. Everything was also very inexpensive. My only complaint is that the two pastries I had - the plain cornetto and the raspberry cornetto - both left a little bit of something on the roof of my mouth. I don't remember this from the years past that I've visited Italy, but it seemed to happen in a few places we went to for pastries this time, so maybe they use something like palm oil rather than butter? Either way, my hot drink would typically wash away whatever it was and all-in-all, I enjoyed the experience. Would definitely recommend!

This and the kosher bakery are the best bakeries in Venice, by far! Five out of five pastries, especially the apricot jelly donut, pistachio marzipan, and chocolate cream puffs. Visited twice on our trip and would order those donuts daily if I could! 5 stars!!!

We came here for an afternoon snack. We got the tiramisu and a jelly donut. They are fast here. The tiramisu was really creamy and had a strong coffee/rum flavour. The jelly donut was okay. I would get the tiramisu again. I would come back and try their other items. I loved the ambiance here as you order and just eat it at the counter with everyone else. Everyones in everyones way but no one gets upset about it. You eat and you leave

Local Venice haunt. Cheap pastries and cheap cappuccino. I wish I spent more than a day in Venice because I would come back, but sheesh I love this bakery. Way better than any of the other overpriced Venice places.

I always do my best to find restaurants that appear to be serving locals when I'm traveling. Tonolo has its fair share of tourists who wander into this storied pasticceria, but it's the local Venetians who understand consistent quality... and the need to arrive early. Indeed, the earlier the better at Tonolo. You'll appreciate the fresh-from-the-oven delicacies, and the chatter of locals on their way to work. Their frothy Cafe d'Orzo pairs nicely with Occhi di Bue (Bull's Eye) Cookies filled with jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar. At 7 AM these buttery cookies melt in your mouth! Also, don't forget to try their Tiramisu, served in blue, white and gold vintage cups and saucers. Savor every moment because you're in Venice, tasting local desserts, having the time of your life. I'm not sure it gets any better than this!

Popped in for a quick breakfast. Quick being the keyword. If you are walking by and there is no counter space give it 3 minutes and people will shuffle in and out. If you know what you want then it will be 1,000 times easier. The pistachio cornetto is fantastic!!!

Tonolo can be a challenge for the indecisive. The line moves quickly and you need to be ready to order when it's your turn. The cashiers can grow impatient if you're too hesitant in ordering, so the key is to be clear and assertive. Also, stand your ground in line or you'll be repeatedly cut by more confident orderers. That being said, the pastries are delicious and inexpensive. It's a unique experience and one of my favorite memories from Venice is picking out pastries to-go with my boyfriend.

My daughter and I each had a cappuccino and shared a fruit tart and a lovely pastry. Both were delightful. Prices were very reasonable.

This spot was perfect for sipping our morning Cappucino's and eating tasty pastry. We bought a box to go to take to friends. Not to miss experience, standing with locals, sipping and eating and taking in the wonderful vibe.

Bite size, Venetian treats of joy! Oh and it's from one of the oldest bakeries in the city. Gently sweetened cookies spread with a dollop of apricot jam, a baked packet filled with crushed walnuts, and a crisp "cake" filled with citrusy lemon peel. Nothing too sweet. Simplicity of flavors. Italy expressed in little treats! Don't pass on the traditional Venetian treats. All essentially cookies. Almost pedestrian but you can't stop eating them. The burssola, buttery, yolky and mildly sweet. Ameretti cookies, crisp with a pronounced taste of almonds balanced by a pleasing bitterness. Zaletti, a golden crisp basic cookie but one of the oldest sweets in the Venetian culture. Finally meringues with their light airy texture, gentle sweetness and almost chalk mouth feel. Low sweetness has a bonus of all pairing with prosecco, just saying. Want some? (There is no queue, two doors, and a crowd three people deep along the entire length of the display case). --Be aggressive but not rude. This is every man for themselves. --Maneuver your way to the cases. --As soon as anyone near you has paid, waive and catch the attention of the "dispenser of goodies". --Let them know "a lot" or "a little" (it makes a difference in the size of the tray they will use. --Not fluent in Italian? Just point and hold up fingers for the quantity. Inexpensive and absolutely delicious in victory.

Best Venezie (fried donuts with raisins) I had. I tried several stores and they are the best. A bit walk if you stay at St. Marco.

Came back not once, but twice. Really good pastries and I'm so glad I chanced upon it by accident. Tips: -I suggest just standing around and trying their pastries -They open early so it's a great breakfast option, comes with tea or coffee as well -They will sell out by late afternoon

This is the best pasty shop in Venezia. Here's a tip: if you bring your own Schlitz, you can order a creme-stuffed bombolone and put it on top of your can to create a makeshift Schlitz cocktail.

Bakery with a variety of sweets and treats. We stopped in for breakfast but it was a little more on the sweet side than croissants. However, I couldn't resist grabbing two donuts which were absolutely delicious. They were incredibly fresh and soft.

One of my biggest regrets in Venice is not coming here more than once - or at least successfully. On the night I arrived in Venice, I noticed how crowded Tonolo was, so the next morning as I was walking by when the bakery was opening at 7:45 AM, I nonchalantly brought only three chocolate puffs that were only €1 a piece. Turns out these puffs were the best I had! The puff itself was so crispy, and the chocolate within filled with whole void but was not overwhelming sweet. Sadly, everytime I tried to return during normal hours, Tonolo was always packed with locals. The one time I finally squeezed in the small storefront in the afternoon, I realized that I was fighting with aggressive locals for few remaining pastry pieces and had to give up... Nonetheless, I highly recommend swinging by this legendary bakery even if there is a big chance you may not get anything during normal hours, because on the off-chance that you lucked out, you'll love anything you get in Tonolo and understand why Venetians are willing to fight for a piece here everyday! --- tl;dr version: 1) Massive favorite among locals in small storefront 2) Cheap yet best pastries ever 3) Highly recommend taking a chance to swing by

Quaint little Shop that has the most fresh baked treats, the expresso is delicious and the lady who works there is kind. A lot of locals were coming in and they seemed to know the staff so that's always a good sign

Authentic Italian bakery! Stumbled into Tonolo this morning half awake looking for a cappuccino. I was happy to find everything I was looking for... and more! The cappuccino's are reasonably priced at 1.8 Eu with the pastries being at a similar mark. My group elected to try a pistachio donut and a chocolate filled pastry. The donut was freshly made that morning being fluffy and savory. The pastry was equally delicious with the right amount of chocolate to not dominate the flavor. There is no seating available, just limited high top counters that you can rest on while you munch. Unless your grabbing your items to go, don't panic trying to pull out your cash to pay. The bakers/ baristas ask that you just square up when you are finished. If you're trying to avoid the mass produced coffees and frozen pastries, put this bakery on your must visit list!

Absolutely Delicious!!! Everything was fresh, the pastries were sweet but not artificial. The espresso was full of flavor and came in a cute cup! The ladies behind the counter were lovely and very pleasant!

I found this place on Trip Advisor and I'm glad we squeezed it in our schedule because all their pastries were really delicious and beautifully decorated!! First you order your pastries and/or coffee. Get this, you pay after you're done eating. I think this is pretty common in other pastry shops in Italy. Nice! Staff were really friendly! I recommend trying anything and I'm not even kidding. I definitely will recommend this to my friends traveling to Venice!

Do not be disappointed if they run out of the items you see here on Yelp. I had my hear set on the pistachio donut, but there were none left. It was around 11am. I bought some other stuff and it was all delicious.

Super fast pace. Get a croissant and cappuccino and down both in a minute. Croissants come in different flavors.. plain, cream, cinnamon apple, wheat... a lot of pastries and cream puffs to choose from. Delicious, nice quick morning pit stop.

We were the only non native folks in the store which definitely speaks to the authenticity of the bakery! The ladies were sweet and helpful. The chocolate cream puff was so good, not too sweet and bursting with deliciousness. For 3 pastries (yes we ate all 3), a pizza bite and two double espressos, was about 8 euros which was great. The pastry with chocolate cake, apricot jam and whipped cream was unique and delightful. Don't pass this place up!

This little pastry and baked goods haven is nestled between the edges of San Polo and the Dorsoduro districts. If you get their early enough there is not too much traffic however after 9 the shop gets busy. The cappuccinos are worm and the pastries tasty. The baked goods are also a delightful treat. However beware that if you are sitting in line you have to speak up to order. If you wait to be noticed many other people will jump ahead of you and order. So don't be shy! The staff knows basic English and of course they speak fluent Italian. When I went there was an elderly lady asking very complicated questions and English and had a hard time understanding the shop stewards. However if you ask simple questions and know simple Italian you are fine. Overall nice shop.

What a pick me upper. Came at 7:40am and it was busy. Staff though was very friendly the customers too as no unruly behavior. Had something that resemble the krispy kreme donut with crema and marmalade filling. Nice soft dough. The creme puff was the star. Cuppacino excellently smooth in all for 3 only 9.7 Eur!! Nice!

Super authentic Italian cafe/bakery. €2.30 for a cappuccino & pastry.. very cheap for Venice. The place is usually packed with locals but the staff is pretty quick and speak enough English to be helpful.

Had a caffe macchiato and a blackberry cornetto. The cornetto was fluffy and the marmalade was amazing. The coffee was good too! Both for €2.40. There were a TON of people, and when we went back a bit later it was still super full. They don't have any seating, either. Still would come back!

World class pastries. If you're in Venice, Italy, make this your start-the-day-ritual. A cappuccino and pastry is such a great way to start your day. You'll be walking a lot. Gas up on pastries. Lol

Great coffee, great pasties, great staff. This is one of the oldest places for pastries and the staff is so friendly and efficient, even though it's so packed.

I was moved to write a review because the other review in English gives it 3 stars--WITHOUT HAVING EATEN THERE. The reviewer seems upset that it was closed Sunday afternoon. You're in Italy! Get used to it. Tonolo (especially when it's open) is sensational.

Super good variety of pastries and sweets. The price really made this place stand out. My wife and I ended up getting 4 or 5 different treats and the cost was less than 10 euro.

Delicious and beautiful pastries in a small shop crowded with locals. We were there early enough in the day that there was a good selection. Picked out 3 or 4 items that three of us shared and all fresh and amazing. There was a square cake for 4 euro that we swore we would come back to try, but alas, they were not open last Sunday morning when our son stopped by. A great stop for a treat in the Dorsoduro area of Venice!

Best pastries ever. Usually the choice between milk or dark chocolate filled cream puffs are easy. Not here. Both are about as perfect as one could be. The secret? Highest quality chocolate, and not too much sugar. Can't wait to come back in a year or two‼

This was our favorite Pasticceria visit in our 2 week trip to Italy. I had heard about the Frittelle con Zabione (Donut filled with Marsala flavored pastry cream) and it is divine... We had great doppio espresso and had wonderful service when they were slammed, they were so nice to us despite us trying to order in Italian. This place is so good you may want to stay over here so you can go everyday for breakfast. We did visit a few times, coffee was always good and some of the other pastries were ok but the Frittelle con Zabione was the winner for us here. Hugs and kisses to all of you who work there!! We loved your bakery, your smiles and hearts.

The pastries here are amazing! Definitely recommend. Ran into this place looking for someplace else and was pleasantly surprised to have some of the best pastries I've ever had!

Get ready to stand in line, only to have your life changed by these heaven sent pastries. The goodies here are exceptionally affordable and there are so many choices! The cannoli is nearly a religious experience, so do yourself a favor: battle the crowds and get your Italian pastry on.

Off the beaten path, but worth getting lost to find. Be ready to order quickly so you do not hold up the line. We got 5 pastries, all delicious.

Can't say enough good things about Pasticceria Tonolo. Outstanding pastries and excellent coffee at more than reasonable prices. Fast, efficient, friendly service - even for those of us speaking little or no Italian. Was recommended by a local and we gladly made this part of our early morning routine.
