I want to write this review in hopes that this property will rise to its full potential. Though the property and grounds are beautiful, the cold and unfriendly service from the staff (as well as poor quality of food) decreases the overall experience.
The rating for the property and grounds is 5 stars! The hotel and grounds are absolutely beautiful. The suite was comfortable and allowed for a good rest.
The rating for service is 1.5 stars. I hope that the service at the hotel will improve. During our stay, the hotel staff and service (except the gentleman who assisted us on the morning of our checkout) was unfriendly, cold, and did not seem to take pride in the property. We felt like we were an imposition to the staff.
When we arrived at the property, we approached the check-in area. The employee (female) stood behind plexiglass the entire time we were checking in for our suite. The plexiglass gave the initial impression of being unwelcome and creating a distinctive barrier between the staff and guests. We were traveling for multiple weeks and had several bags. Since our suite was on the 2nd level, we asked the attendant if there was anyone who could assist with our luggage. We were told "No"….I asked again and was again told “No. No one is here to help you.”
We were told, that as guests of the hotel, that we could experience a wine tasting at the El Esteco Winery (attached to the hotel). After taking our bags to the room, we decided to start-over and visit the winery. Upon entering the winery, we noticed that we were the only people in the shop. Paula, an employee, sat behind the desk. Paula never greeted or welcomed us – and we had the distinctive impression that we were not welcomed and our presence was not welcome. A male employee finally came forward and asked us if we wanted red or white wine. No welcome, thank you for being here, let me give you a brief overview of our winery, etc. Not an upscale or welcoming experience at all. Even when asking questions about the winery, we were told "Red or white wine."
The restaurant was understaffed for the amount of guests. The servers seemed well-intentioned, but you could tell that they were overworked and stressed. The food, during multiple nights, was of poor quality – which was disappointing. We had lunch in town on multiple days and the food quality in town was significantly better than the hotel.
On our second day, we realized that we had no bottled water available. We asked the front desk and were told that we were expected to refill the plastic water bottle that we had been given the day before. That is fine; however, we were never informed of that recommendation and housekeeping had discarded the bottle. We informed the staff member of this...and after being scolded we were finally and reluctantly provided with another plastic bottle of water.
On the day of checkout, a male front desk employee noticed me brining bags down the stairs. The employee quickly came up the stairs and noted "Please let us help with your bags." This employee was the only employee we encountered willing to offer proactive and kind service.
This hotel has amazing potential - but the cold and indifferent service was off-putting and not consistent with a property attempting to be upscale.
