The Ultimate List of Wonderfully Specific Museums

"Collecting pencil sharpeners and assembling them into a museum dedicated to pencil sharpeners is a kind of eccentric thing to do. Step inside the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum in Logan, Ohio and it somehow seems perfectly admirable. The Pencil Sharpener Museum is the result of over 20 years of collecting by Ohio local, Rev. Paul A. Johnson. His wife gave him a couple of car-shaped sharpeners in the late 1980s, and his zeal for collecting was born. The sharpeners lived in a pre-fab shed in Johnson’s backyard, growing over time to over 3400 at the time he passed away in 2010. His family was holding onto them when salvation for the whole collection – and the shed – came calling in 2011. It was the Hocking Hills Welcome Center, happy to take on the job of collection custodian, and everything was moved over to their site in South Logan.   Just like any museum, the collection has been meticulously cataloged and preserved in protective cases. There are sharpening cars, toys, Garfields, Mickeys, Tweetybirds, tractors, airplanes, trains, U.S. presidents, panda bears. There are old ones and new ones, and some shelf-mounted classics you generally only see at the library. Try to be sharp on your puns though—the staff has heard them all." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Such a cool place! Went down memory lane as I did the search and find game they have available! My grandma used to collect the little metal pencil sharpener! Free to the public! Has air conditioning for a quick cool down! The welcome center is next door with lots of information about the park and trails.

What a cute little addition to the Hocking Hills welcome center. Go in if you are there. You can read about it in a brochure and the lady in the welcome center told us about it. She also gave my kids a paper with a scavenger hunt. They filled it out and got to choose an pencil sharpener for themselves. Definitely a nice road side attraction. It's free to get in.

We're visiting from NY and decided to stop by here. It's a cute little building, definitely interesting to see it. I love seeing all the little random things while you travel.

Google
This is a cute museum next to the welcome center. With tons of unique pencil sharpeners that will fascinate people of all ages.

Great collection of pencil sharpeners from the past and present. When my sister in law suggested we visit the museum I was skeptical… but the place gives the food for a curious mind (as well as the realization that materials that were used in the past (metal, wood, etc.) are so much more appealing that cheap plastic 😏.

The pencil sharpener museum was worth the stop on a day that the rain prohibited hiking. Stop in at the welcome center first to get your scavenger hunt list. A prize is given to those who complete it.

If you're looking for a "pointed" experience in the heart of Hocking Hills, the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum is truly a cut above the rest! This quirky, privately owned museum is a hidden gem that will "draw" you in with its sharp collection and sharpen your appreciation for this often-overlooked tool. Housed in a cozy one-room cabin, this museum is anything but dull. With thousands of pencil sharpeners on display, it’s "sharp-tacular" how the curators manage to never repeat a single sharpener. Each visit promises to be a fresh "point of view," with new sharpeners rotating in and out of the spotlight. Reverend Paul A. Johnson, the mastermind behind this collection, certainly had a keen eye for the finer points of pencil sharpening. His passion for collecting has created a museum that is "on point" with its vast array of designs, ranging from the whimsical to the classic. It’s a fascinating look at how something so small can have such a "sharp impact" on our everyday lives. Maintained lovingly by his family and the Hocking Hills Tourism Association, this museum is the perfect "sharp-stop" for anyone with a taste for the unusual. Whether you're a "sharp-minded" collector or just looking for something to do, this museum will surely "sharpen" your day. So, if you find yourself in Hocking Hills, make sure to pencil in a visit to the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum. It’s a "cutting-edge" experience that will leave you grinning from ear to ear and perhaps seeing pencil sharpeners in a whole new light!

Yelp
This was a fun little stop as we were on an RV sightseeing trip. As pencil sharpeners are small, so is this one room museum. It did take a lot of time and effort to put together, so kudos for that. There's some limited parking outside and no cost for the museum, so why not?

Yelp
The pencils sharpeners were so funny and so awesomely awesome. Absolutely life changing!!

Yelp
Ermagerd! What a cute little museum. All of one room this museum is loaded with pencil sharpeners of all shapes and sizes! Located outside the visitor center there is no charge. Just walk in. Not something I would have gone on a mission to find, this turned out to be a very fun and interesting exhibit. Great family fun. Make a game out of it. Who can find the VW? Where is the ship? Can anyone find Mickey? Why not? If you're in the area and just need an excuse to get out of the car, stop on by, or better yet add it to your itinerary. It was a lot of fun.

Yelp
This is definitely one of the smallest museums I've ever visited, with a collection of something seemingly small but very culturally significant. The Pencil Sharpener Museum is a must-see if you're visiting Hocking Hills or Logan. Plus: It's totally free! The Pencil Sharpener Museum is open when the Hocking Hills Visitors Center is open. It looks like a little wooden shed in front of the visitors center. It's so small that there's a sign saying that only one family is allowed inside at a time. Once you step inside, you're surrounded on three sides by pencil sharpeners of all kinds: pencil sharpeners shaped like food, former presidents, airplanes, dolls, etcetera. This museum is tiny but you could spend a good 15 minutes just looking at all of the pencil sharpeners that were collected by one person, Reverend Paul A. Johnson. He started his collection more than two decades ago, and now you can gawk at more than 3,400 pencil sharpeners of all kinds.

Yelp
The Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum is located just off US Highway 33 next to the Hocking Valley Visitor Center. The collection of 1,700 novelty pencil sharpeners was put together over 10 years after the collection received a single novelty sharpener. The collection is housed in its own small building. Sharpeners are arranged by category-- trains, ships, characters, Disney and more. There are legitimate pencil sharpeners, too! A lot of fun to visit.

Yelp
Cool collection of ALL KINDS of pencil sharpeners. All the way back to pre-world wars to more current 90s paraphernalia. I particularly liked the copper metal looking ones: miniature musical instruments, old planes, historical US monuments, even vintage typewriters and sewing machines. Everything is grouped, which made it appealing the eyes. Definitely worth a visit, if you're in the area!

Yelp
So the visit to this stop was an unexpected surprise and a lot of fun to explore. Over 3,000 pencil sharpeners of all different kinds that you would have no idea existed - ever! The tiny building is the original one from Mr Johnson's property but moved to the current location after he passed away. If you are in the area, stop and take a look!

Yelp
I had no idea there was such an museum! There were over 3200 different pencil sharpeners! All were inside glass cases. The museum is inside a darling shed located near tourism building for Logan, Ohio. I remember having a couple of those pencil sharpeners growing up but seeing how many different ones there blows my mind. All were collected by one man. I think it's a place to visit if you're ever close to Logan!

Yelp
A cute little stop if you are traveling in the area. This pastor received a gift of pencil sharpeners. He was inspired to begin a collection that has expanded into a mini museum. Modes of transport, holidays, people and patriotic charms. You can find many categories represented i. His collection. Free. It won't take you long to see, depending on your interest level.

Yelp
What a fun and quirky museum! The history behind the collection is fascinating to read, and it's amazing to see the sheer number of items in the collection. The wide variety of themed groups is very impressive - characters, transportation, and more! It's free and located directly outside of the welcome center, so it's a very convenient stop! Depending on how intriguing you find the collection, you could spend just five minutes to a good half hour peering at everything. It never occurred to me there would be an excavator or airplane pencil sharpener! There's a neat brochure available inside the welcome center that provides additional information about not only the collection, its owner, but the move of the entire museum from its former location to its current one.

Yelp
Adorable place to peak at while gathering information from the visitors center. Wide array of types and themes, you're sure to find one that would make everyone in the family smile :)

Yelp
This is, by far, the best Pencil Sharpener museum I have ever had the pleasure of touring... (hey, what do you want for a free attraction hiding behind the visitor's center??) Seriously, worth the 10 minutes it takes to look around. The very nature of it will put a huge smile on your face. It's fun, it's goofy, it filled us with joy.

Yelp
Who would have thought that you would see tons of pencil sharpeners under one roof. From the average to the unique. Interesting to see.

Yelp
The literal definition of this museum is: a shed on the side of the road filled with old pencil sharpeners. A better description is: Behold, a glorious haven! A pencil sharpener sanctuary with no rival for size or awe. Come visitors; come marvel upon it. I stumbled upon this gem on my trip to the Hocking Hills visitor center. It would have been easy to miss, but thankfully, the staff at the visitor's center directed my attention. Artfully displayed, the collection boasts what seems like a lifelong passion for the obscure. The vast array of colors, styles, and mechanisms will send your mind reeling. I highly recommend stopping in. It's totally free and something you will never see anywhere else.

Yelp
Located at the Hocking Hills Welcome Center in a shed, this little gem is worth a peek! My boyfriend and I were about to get back on the road after picking up a few maps, but decided to look inside. I'm glad we did!! Hundreds and hundreds of...you guessed it, pencil sharpeners! You won't see this anywhere else, make sure you take a look.

Yelp
Nice to browse after hitting the Visitor Center Yes, this is a very small, shed-sized attraction, one that will take you about five minutes to browse. However, I believe it's worth it. There is a wide variety of pencil sharpeners to be found: some very old, some modern, some based on video game or cartoon characters, some based on religious symbols. They were neat to look at. There are also some newspaper articles hanging on the wall talking about the founder of this "museum," but I didn't really read them. Overall, I'd recommend visiting it since it's right outside the Visitor Center and free. Plus, you can tell your friends that you went to the world's only pencil sharpener museum: that's a good conversation starter.

Yelp
Went this weekend. a must stop an see!!!!!! What a hidden gem in the hocking hills! Snow, sleet, rain or shine the visit will put a smile on your face. Thank You Mr. Paul A. Johnson your passion of collecting is a amusement for everyone.
