In September, my boyfriend and I took a trip from New York to Germany and were determined to check out Paulaner, as our first date back home was at their New York City location a year prior. We loved the service and beer in New York and figured Germany would be that much better. The food and drink were both great and our waiter Nicholas was also wonderful during our first visit. We went for a meal the first weekend of Oktoberfest when it was understandably very busy and the staff did a great job finding us a table that could accommodate us for a few hours and even went out of their way to find us a new table once our time elapsed and our table was needed for a reservation. Nicholas did a great job serving our food and drinks and was extremely friendly the entire time. We were ecstatic with the excellent start to our trip in Munich. After a great first impression, we decided to return for lunch on our last day in Germany before heading back home. Our second visit to Paulaner was unfortunately the exact opposite of our first experience thanks to our rude waitress Ricarda.
Ricarda greeted our table without so much as a hello and instead demanded I remove my water bottle from the table. She said I couldn't drink my water because it wasn't distributed at the brewery, although a quick look around Paulaner revealed otherwise, as several other tables had water bottles from the same brand, Adelholzener. I found her approach rude and accusatory. Had she nicely informed me of this Paulaner policy and offered to replace my water with some of their own, I would have happily obliged, but she confronted me as if I was trying to pull a fast one.
Next, Ricarda took our food orders. After my boyfriend ordered an appetizer and entre, Ricarda collected our menus and abruptly walked off, without so much as a glance at me. I followed her back to the area where she placed our orders into a computer and reminded her of my existence, "Excuse me, I'd like to order too." She looked at me quizzically and asked if I wanted to replace our appetizer with my order. At that point I realized she must have thought my boyfriend was ordering for both of us when he ordered his appetizer and entre, which was forgivable, but she did not offer an apology. While it could have been an honest mistake and miscommunication, she again looked at me as if I had done something wrong hearkening back to the water incident. So much for customer service. I felt like I was being put on trial.
When Ricarda arrived with the food, her tune seemed to change. She became attentive and chipper and I reconsidered, thinking I possibly misread the situation or maybe even that she was just having a bad day. However, when we requested the check, Ricarda point blank asked us how much we wanted to tip when I offered her my credit card. I was stunned. When Nicholas served us a few days prior and we paid with credit card, he waited for us to volunteer the tip and upon receiving it remarked, "Wow, thank you. That is very generous." Ricarda's demand for a tip was both intrusive and unnecessary and seemed to be predicated upon the assumption that because we are Americans we would be expected to tip her more than is customary in Germany.
The icing on the cake was when she handed back my credit card and the bill back to my boyfriend, despite it being obvious that I was taking care of the bill since, you know, I took the card out of my wallet, handed it to her, and gave her Euros for the tip as well. Oh, also my name is Theresa. My boyfriend definitely does not look like a Theresa. It made me question if the whole not taking my order thing was actually an honest mistake or if Ricarda still thinks it is 1950 and that men pay for everything.
I wish I could give Paulaner 5 stars. If I hadn't come back after my first visit when Nicholas served us, this review would be very different, but Ricarda unfortunately soured the last day of an otherwise wonderful trip.
