"A Bar or a Museum? You need to make time for this bar, because there is an 82-page book—a fantastic work of art—from which to choose a cocktail. Or you can have tea. Also, you will need time to check out all five rooms. Thousands of pieces are here: medals, frames, mugs, tin soldiers, flags, cartoons, strollers, busts, the work of Bordalo Pinheiro (a Portuguese artist), and much more. And, go to the last room to play at the snooker tables (it’s the only smoking room). The name comes from a time before the bar, when a grocery store here sold spices, teas, coffees, and other delicacies. In 1986 the place became a bar, or should I say museum? To enter you will need to ring the bell."

Pavilhão Chinês – Lisbon, Portugal - Gastro Obscura

"Look for the red door and ring the doorbell to be let inside Pavilhão Chinês, a bar in the trendy Bairro Alto neighborhood of Lisbon. Housed in a 1901 building that was formerly a grocery store, the bar’s five rooms are packed with the owner’s personal stash of vintage collectibles and oddities, amounting to a sprawling cabinet of curiosities. There are rows of helmets and military uniforms, vintage paintings in every corner, and shelves with all manner of dolls and action figures. Model planes and boats strung from the darkened ceilings jostle for space with crystal chandeliers. Around the bar counter, china plates and antique mugs hang helter-skelter around perched porcelain figurines. Don’t bump into the British Palace guard mannequin standing at attention on your way to order a drink. Sit at the festively upholstered little booths in one of the rooms, lined on all four sides with ever more cabinets bursting with vintage toys, trains, pins, and more. Order some bacalhau and a bottle of wine, and take in the surroundings in this spirited curiosity-shop-cum-drinking-establishment. Know Before You Go The bar is open 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Remember: You have to a ring a bell to be let inside." - p patricialotterman, rbenn250, chrisjthen, cdb, patricialotterman, joshuacarlon, ahvenas, c chrisjthen, bobbypinto, c cdb

"The five rooms of Pavilhão Chinês, in Bairro Alto, essentially compose a small gallery that flaunt a staggering collection of antiques. Here, there are plates on walls, statues propped up on tables, and rows and rows of glass cabinets showing off the likes of figurines, fans, and hats. When you're ensconced in one of the striped benches, surrounded by dark wood, you'll feel a bit like you're imbibing in a shop or an offbeat museum. Between rounds of drinks, kick back at the pool table." - Alia Akkam

Pavilhão Chinês has an incredible design, full of unique and intriguing decor that creates a fantastic atmosphere. However, the cocktails were just okay and definitely overpriced. You’re really paying for the experience and ambiance rather than exceptional drinks. Worth a visit for the vibe, but don't expect top-tier cocktails.

Google
We stopped by for a cocktail and to view the collections. We sat at the bar. Not overly friendly or social. We left after one drink. We had a Negroni and Old Fashioned and bill was ~30USD

Great place to visit. Inside is magic. Sure there are some tourists but lot of locals still coming to play pool or have a drink.

Was met at the door by a waiter. Asked is there was a bar, he replied - best one in the city. What a bold statement. Asked for a menu, got offered a qr code which I hate. Requested a printed menu, which had all the prices changed with a pen. Odered wine, served very unenthusiasticly. Wanted to try cocktail…asked a barman if he makes good singapore sling….he seemed confident, but turns out there was no reason for that. Cocktail was horrendous. Literally like something I would make in a gas station setting myself. Would never return. Ridiculous

Google
This is without doubt the best pub in Lisbon! So much to look at, outstanding service and a great choice of drinks. The two pool tables are pristine and good value for money. If you're visiting Lisbon you have to spend an hour in this pub to look at the various memorabilia here!

Google
Very nice and stylish cocktail bar. But that's no use if the quality of the drinks isn't right. Unfortunately my Old Fashion had 2 slices of orange and 5 industrial ice cubes. An absolute no go for this drink. Many of the other drinks looked like they were served at a children's birthday party. A great pity.

Google
This bar was pretty hard to find. With the help of Google maps once my location was on I took a guess and rang the doorbell and presto I was in. The door by the way is red coloured. Amazing toys all over the cabinets to admire. Regarding the cocktails there is an extensive menu to choose from. I ordered the lord which is something like a blue lagoon. Service was prompt maybe due that I arrived early in the evening. Overall I recommend this bar.

Google
A huge bar with several rooms, all with a very elaborate decoration, war and Asian themed. Some of the woodwork are really amazing. The last room has two billiard tables. But all this does not justify the bad quality of the drinks. Old fashioned tasted bad. Small pieces of ice, inappropriate thin walls glass, inaccurate slices of orange.

Yelp
This is a quirky little bar I found on Atlas Obscura when researching for my trip. It turns out it was right next to where I chose to get dinner and I was moderately curious about it. So first things first, you must ring the bell. I didn't remember this one little factoid. As a result, I'm sure there's footage of me embarrassingly attempting to pull and push the doors for about 5 minutes. At some point they just keep the doors open, but you will ring the bell at least before 10pm. There are about 3-4 rooms filled to the brim with tchotchkes and bobbles in every corner - ships, trains, dolls, hats, mugs, you name it. Think lots of mismatched, eclectic furniture except they're arranged extremely tastefully. Cocktails will run you anywhere between 11-20€ depending on what you get. I settled for a Lady Pisanc at the recommendation of one of the waiters which turned out to be a light, mildly sweet, foamy drink. It was a pleasant way to end the evening

Yelp
Speakeasy bar located in Barrio Alto in Lisbon. Met up with some friends we met on an excursion that day and we wanted to go out for a drink at night. It's not marked and you ring a doorbell to go inside. Service was great, they accommodated our large group and checked in on us. They had a full bar and the whole place was surprising, so many different knick knacks and items, mirrors, and rooms. There's a pool table in the back and there are QR codes to check the menu. A lot of us got beers, I got an espresso martini and there are tons of cocktails to choose from. I appreciated that the music wasn't so loud so we were able to have conversations and hear each other and we were able to sit comfortably with a large group.

Yelp
DO NOT PASS BY! Pavilhao Chines is one of if not the most unique speakeasy (bar) not only in Lisbon but perhaps in all of Europe. The atmosphere is incredible. SOOO many unique nick nacks, collections from everything imaginable. Too many to even mention what they are. The service was great as we sat at the bar in the middle of the place. It's broken down into many smaller rooms. Don't just stop at the bar, even more. We didn't eat anything but we had a couple of wonderful cocktails. The bartender was very nice and explained the history of the place. I could get into it but I would not do it justice. PLEASE check it out for a once in a lifetime experience.

Yelp
Ring the doorbell to get in this speakeasy. I got in close to their closing time, but they were nice and still let us in. They have lots of nicely decorated rooms inside with lots of comfy seating. They had an extensive menu of cocktails accessed by QR code. They have free WiFi! Bathroom was near the bar. We asked for a glass of water, but they never brought it to us. This place is worth checking out. One of the people in our group described it like a museum because of the random collections they have displayed here.

Yelp
Fantastic atmosphere! I think this is a must-do item in Lisbon. It's super unique, quirky, strange, and relaxing. It's also a very large space, but with many nooks and separate spaces within it that I appreciate, which make it feel intimate. Their drink menu is extensive, so you should be able to find something you like or want to try.

Yelp
Online write up of the place seemed cool, but it's really just a dark, junky bar. I stopped by around 7:30pm and the kitchen wasn't open. The menu was extremely long and I had a hard time deciding what to get for a drink, so I asked the waiter for a fruity, sweet drink and he recommended the house special. It looked pretty and had sufficient alcohol. This place only took cash, so take note. I don't see the hype, but maybe someone else will.
google avatar

Krys P.

Yelp
This place wows visitors with the cabinets and cabinets of curios: trinkets, toys, memorabilia of time bygone. The menu is also impressive in its heft, a long list of drinks from tea to cocktails to whiskey and more. Less awesome is the service, which, as some others noted, somewhat non-existent. We felt we may have melted into the large cushy sofas the way the waitstaff seem to not notice us. I was in the mood for some port wine, for a sweet ending to my night. Somewhat surprised that they are really lacking in that category. I expected several listing with info about the vineyards and vintage but nope, sorry, and the generic port/madeira we received were less than satisfying.

Yelp
Super cool speakeasy bar in Lisbon. Unmarked door with a bell to ring and be let in. Stopped by for a drink on the way back from dinner to the hotel. Just had a classic martini. Nothing special, just a really well made drink. Service was fast and friendly, and the menu is extensive. The decor is kinda wild, each room seems to have a different themed collection, like mugs or tin soldiers. The lights were a little bright for a speakeasy vibe, but maybe that's just a one off.

Rona P.

Yelp
Really cool speakeasy in the Barrio Alto. Interesting space and good vibe recommended by our amazing Uber driver, Orlando

Yelp
Had to check this place out while in Lisbon. Had a convivial time here downing a couple of G&T's and enjoying the ambiance. The myriad of memorabilia in the the different rooms is fun. They have a small menu of bar food yo accompany your drinks. Seen some complaints about service. The waiters put on a stiff upper lip , but are efficient. We opted for bar seating and had no trouble ordering drinks or food from the bartender. We enjoyed ourselves and would return again.

Yelp
This place is part toy shop, part oddity museum and part classic bar. It seems very popular in the PR area with all types of people. You can get lost just staring at the walls. It has been around for quite a long time and is something you would find on Atlas Obscura or something like that. Even with the classic look, the bar seems very average. The bar menu is very long with some strange concoctions, and the quality seems to vary. Much of what people were ordering were mixed, fruity style drinks. There is not really a great selection of mid-top shelf stuff, so while the menu is big it reminds me of something you'd find in an all inclusive resort. Seating is very strange in spots, with extremely low tables and booths. Worth a visit if you need a watering hole, but if you are looking for a cocktail experience this may not be for you. Music selection was very interesting for the establishment.

Yelp
Whenever I travel, I like to get a taste of the nightlife. The second stop of my bar crawl in Lisbon was Pavilhao Chines. This bar was recommended in my guide book. Located on a busy street, it took me a while to figure out how to get in as the door was locked. After realizing I can indeed turn a doorknob correctly, I found out that you have to ring their doorbell to get in. Like a speakeasy. Located on a busy street, this bar looks cool from the outside. But just wait until you get inside. Pavilhao Chines is a large bar with several rooms. Most of the rooms have comfortable seating and there is also a small bar in one of the rooms. Make sure to explore each one as they all have their own vibe. One commonality between all of the rooms is all of the trinkets scattered throughout. Military trinkets, movie trinkets, pop culture trinkets...you name it. This is definitely an interesting and quirky bar. While the bar itself is awesome, the service was bad. I sat at the bar and it took me forever to get a drink. It's like I was invisible. I waited until I got fed up and proactively asked for a drink. It's a common practice when you sit down at a bar for one of the bartenders to greet you and ask what you'd like to order. This didn't happen here. Management needs to provide some proper training.

Yelp
I say this without any doubt, by far the most important highlight of Lisbon, this bar will transport you and your partner/friend/family members to a New realm. Ring the door bell and wait a second you'll be immersed in the most fantastic interior decor and put your phones away after you've ordered via their QR code menu. The vibe is sublime
google avatar

Mariam W.

Yelp
Drinks aren't mind blowing but the visual eye candy is over the top! You cannot stop looking at all the trinkets! Do not miss the toy soldier room in the back. Stay for a drink or play a round of pool. Good fun and definitely something unusual. Also located on a street with many lunch and dinner restaurant options. Service was good on the night we went but according to other reviews it can be slow.

Yelp
I popped in here while in the area on vacation. I ended up not staying because it was a bit confusing and no one who worked here seemed interested in helping out a customer. The inside was as ridiculously decorated as described by others. I took a few pictures before cutting my losses and going to one of the nearby places with better/responsive service. If I was with a friend(s), I'd probably try coming back, but in my own, I can find less challenging options.

Yelp
Pavilhao Chines was way too much fun. it kind of reminded me of drinking in someone's grandparents' house. - there was an abundance of alcohol: every cocktail under the sun and then a hundred more that I never even heard of. a little steep but the funky atmosphere makes it worth it. - the waiters were older men in formal waiter attire straight outta 1973. vests and all. - there were cabinets filled with all sorts of outrageous trinkets, knick-knacks, collectibles, tchotchkes, and any other clever nickname for "random junk". model airplanes, maps, porcelain dolls, clocks, military figures, and more. - if you're easily offended, just be forewarned that a slight portion of the collection is, well, let's just say "from a different era" - just like the stuff you'd probably find in your grandparents' house.

Yelp
Crazy cool little bar full of kitschy collectibles. Good drinks in a great part of Lisbon - definitely a good place to stop in a night out!

Yelp
Decent prices here! This place was recommended by the bartender at Cargo III. They charged extra for the bread, cheese, and prosciutto, so be aware or decline if they offer. We ordered the bacalhau and beef/egg/rice, as well as a bottle of red wine recommended to us- papa figos. Overall this was probably the best meal I had in Lisbon!! The red wine was amazing.

Yelp
Very cool bar...I think I could come here 100x and find something interesting to look at that I had not noticed before every time. Drinks and a little more expensive than most places in Lisbon but consistent with most of the rest of Europe and US.
google avatar

Shaghiegh C.

Yelp
I love this place ! Such a unique place that is easy to walk past, yet full of of old art work, toys and statues. The drinks are amazing ! (Espresso martini is a must) and the environment is very relaxed and casual. People from all ages go there to get away from the typical hip bars, and it really does feel like you aren't in the 2000's which is great ! They have 2 pool tables which is €12 for 1 hour and €6 for 30 minuets. It isn't the biggest bar (except for the pool room) but it's still a fun place to go in larger groups or even smaller groups just to get away from everything.
google avatar

Sun-Rabbit Q.

Yelp
Don't miss! Astonishing!!! How many people for how many years have been collecting all these objects?! It is almost impossible to have a good look at every piece during one visit. Consider the price of the drinks to be the price of a museum ticket. By the way, cocktails are decent so that 7,50 Euros is not a shocking price at all. Shacks aren't expensive. Old-fashioned atmosphere enhances the experience. Staff speaks a very polite English. Later in the evening the door is locked, ring the bell.
google avatar

Andy R.

Yelp
One of my favorite bar-cafes in the world. Excellent cocktails... Wide selection of some of the world's best alcohols.. Always easy to get a seat.. And of course, the atmosphere... It's like being frozen in time.. An art nouveau kaleidoscope treat for the eyes. Beautiful and strange, with something new to notice each time you go in and each drink you take. Even the music mix is odd. You can go from soft R&B to 80s pop to Swing back to back to back. Just a feast for all of the senses. A timeless place that I hope lasts forever. One of a dying breed worldwide.

Yelp
My friend, a former Lisbonian, said this was one of the things he missed when he moved away. He was describing it and then said, "ok let's just go there and you'll see". Truely, there are no words to describe, you'll have to go here. But, if I had to describe it in a word, I would say "yard sale". There's SO MUCH to look at and while you're sipping your sip while staring at cabinet full of creepy baby dolls, you have to think.... wtf was this guy thinking? You're free to meander about and look at all the collections. The drinks were on the sugar heavy side and therefore not my favorite, but your eyes will be overwhelmed with some impressive collections.
google avatar

Tiffany K.

Yelp
It's kind of expensive, but this bar has the most interesting vibe to it and we really enjoyed it! You can't really tell what it is from the outside and it's not really a place you'd just stumble across but rather somewhere that you have to be told about. However on the inside, the place is huge!! It's also decorated like someone took a bunch of stuff from a giant flea market and organized it all together to make jam packed decorations.
google avatar

Andy B.

Yelp
Great bar filled with all sorts of collectibles and memorabilia - but its all done in the best possible taste - so it isn't tacky in the slightest. The bar staff are friendly and efficient - so no complaints there. They serve a selection of sandwiches - suitable for a quick snack to stave off hunger, but not that substantial. Go for the beer, cocktails or surroundings, not the food. Go all the way in to the smoking room (which wasn't that bad when I was there - because it's a big room) and look around. Well worth a visit on your own, or with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
I bring anyone who visits Lisbon to this bar. The ambiance is amazing. The waiters walk around in red vests over white shirts. The menu is like a cartoon from the American 1920's with flappers. The drinks, while not as cheap as other places around Bairro Alto, are very well made. They have pool tables in the back.
google avatar

Lÿda D.

Yelp
My husband and I really adored this place. The decorations are vintage and eccentric. It's such a beautiful bar worth checking out with delicious cocktails!

Yelp
Unique decor ruined by uninspired and unfriendly service, have a peek inside and go enjoy your drink somewhere else

Yelp
Our guide said that Tony Blair would visit this bar regularly. We were very disappointed. The many waiters were slow and unmotivated. The interior is a museum. The cocktails were bad. No recommendation.

Yelp
This is a very interesting space; collectables are mounting since 1986 delighting and entertaining your eyes and mind at the same time. It was actually the owner who started collecting and now there is a collection worth a musuem. It includes almost everything from military helmets, model planes, coins, postcards, toy soldiers, sculptures, among other treasures! The name is still a legacy from what this space used to be: a grocery that sold spices from the east. All in all a great experience in a cozy environment. It is open 7 days a week and has a good and extensive choice of Cocktails, Tea and eatable treats.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice place to visit cause deco is really interesting but way too overpriced and waiters rude and super slow. 3 people got 1 menu, a pint took 15m to pour (for 5e) cocktails about 25-30m (9.5e each).. Was a Tuesday so place wasnt even full... Not coming back
google avatar

Siddhi L.

Yelp
This is an unusually expensive bar for Lisbon, but it's also one of the quirkiest and most charming. I recommend getting one of their liquor shots and hot water-- making yourself a sort of hot toddy-- as it's rather expensive to get multiple cocktails. The place itself is practically a museum and is certainly worth at least one drink while you explore the array of collectables housed there.

Miguel A.

Yelp
Despite the fact that this is a beautiful place with a good ambience, I for one could not be more displeased with the plain rudeness of the staff. It all started on a Monday night when I got to this place for the first time with a small group of friends, after hearing so many great things about the beautiful decor and the collectibles they displayed on the walls. Needless to say I had great expectations. And truth is it is beautiful indeed. Sadly, as soon as we sat in the almost empty room, we took a look at the menu and the prices were a complete rip off. We found nothing on that menu that costed less than 3€. Even so, when the waiter approached us, we asked for two coffees and two natural juices, as three members of our group weren't interested in ordering anything at the time. After a moment of silence, the waiter told us we were obliged to order more things, as everyone had to make an order, as directed by a paper on the front door that says "Consumo obrigatório", loosely translated to "Mandatory to consume". We politely told the "gentleman" that there we were indeed consuming, actually more than half of the people were consuming as we made an order that was well beyhond 10€, and that the paper in question did not inform of a minimum value nor did it explicitly say that EVERYONE had to make an order. Furthermore, the place was almost empty so we were not taking away seated places from other more consuming customers. The waiter then proceeded to say he would not serve us at all if we didn't make an order by person, showing the most arrogant demeanor and tone of voice. As we were in no disposition to be subjected to such rudeness, let the least pay for it, we decided to leave at once. As we were leaving we were offered a cynical "Come back anytime!" by the waiter. Needless to say I won't go back to this place ever again.
