Where to Stay in Christchurch When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"I appreciated the large, clean, modern rooms and the value here — the four‑star property has two on‑site restaurants, a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, small fitness center, free parking, roomy bathrooms with good water pressure, and comfortable beds in a simple, contemporary setting." - Matthew Kepnes

The 6 Best Hotels in Christchurch (Updated 2025)

"Located in Merivale, a hip suburb north of City-Centre, I found this unpretentious, affordable four-star hotel clean and comfortable with a contemporary design and large, modern rooms featuring smart TVs, mini fridges, and large desks. The property includes two on-site restaurants and offers a buffet breakfast in the mornings (not included), plus a heated outdoor pool, sauna, and a small fitness center. Rooms are large and well-lit with comfy beds, roomy bathrooms, and showers with pretty good water pressure; there's free parking and larger family rooms, which is handy for road trips or group travel." - Matthew Kepnes

Great cozy hotel which has staff that's very affable and caring. Reception staff is efficient and helpful. Housekeeping was perfect, clean and prompt. Complimentary Breakfast which I booked was tasty, and good. Rooms are perfectly sized, adequately equipped. Overall it's value for money.|Other guests who speak loudly can disturb you.

I recently dined at The Pavilions Hotel restaurant in the evening, and I have to say the service was absolutely outstanding. Georgia looked after us, and she was incredible from start to finish. She greeted us with a huge, genuine smile that instantly made us feel welcome. Throughout the night, her attention to detail, professionalism, and warm personality really stood out. Nothing was too much trouble, and she made the whole experience feel special. Georgia is a true asset to the team, and I would highly recommend asking for her if you want exceptional service!

Clean, pleasant, with excellent customer service. Attached restaurant is excellent. Definitely try their lamb. Bathroom with great water pressure, good fan. Parking was super easy. I needed to shred some paper documents, and the front office lady immediately took me to the shredder so I can do it myself.( Instead of taking the documents, putting them aside and assuring me that they will do it later.)

This hotel is absolutely brilliant, I loved my three night stay recovering from 34hrs of travel to NZ beforehand! Although on the more expensive side for me personally, the location was perfect with everything easily within walking distance. The nearby park & botanical gardens were definitely my favourite! The staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful & the room had everything you could possibly need & more - the jacuzzi bath was a very nice touch! I can’t comment on the facilities as didn’t end up using these but the breakfast & food was great. My only bit of feedback would be, I hadn’t realised there was no lift to many of the rooms & getting a 30kg suitcase up their solo with an injury was definitely a bit of a challenge! The breakfast area is also quite small so got very busy at times! Would absolutely recommend & would definitely stay again!

Beautiful clean room, quiet and peaceful!|Reception staff very friendly and assisted with both the enquiries I had while I stayed. I was slightly early and got to check in before I was due which was very helpful on a very hot Chch day. Restaurant & bar was very handy & the food there is always good. I always choose the Pavilions when I am travelling for business as it is just so easy.

We had a wonderful stay at The Pavillions. Our room was impressively spacious and very comfortable, exactly what we needed. We’d return without hesitation and highly recommend requesting a room with the spa bath for an extra touch of relaxation.

Stayed here for 3 nights when coming for a wedding. Good location that left us being able to explore town on foot if we wanted.||The room itself was quite good. Nothing amazing but did the job.||We didn’t try the restaurant, bar, or breakfast as we had alternative arrangements.

Yelp
We spent a total of 3 nights here to and from our way from the Christchurch Airport onward to the South Island. It was the perfect transition point for our two week trip. The full cooked breakfasts (included with certain rates) were fabulous, the Executive Spa Studio was spacious and nicely equipped with desk, kitchenette, and both a spa tub and a roomy shower. The staff is helpful. Parking is usually right in front of your room. I used the pavilions.co.nz website and found the best rates there after seeing this hotel on a generic hotel website.

Yelp
I stayed here a couple of nights with my parents after we all flew into Christchurch :) We rented a two bedroom suite which also had a nice living area, dining table, mini kitchen, fridge, and a big bathroom with a large bathtub. We were on the second floor so that kept things quiet since no one was above us. The beds were comfortable and the sheets were nice and clean and cozy. The wifi died on us at one point but my dad went to ask the front desk for help and the guy gave him the password to a special network which we were able to use for a little while until the regular network was back. The restaurant they have on site is excellent as well; we ate there for dinner one night and I was impressed!

Yelp
Came here for Christmas and it was one of the only places open for dinner. We were so glad it was! The dining room is half sun room, half indoors. The staff was very friendly. Our waitress went thoroughly through the specials and gave tips on what was locally unique. When I asked what juices were in the refrigerator in the corner, she excitedly talked about the coconut blend. She actually ended up giving a small bottle to me on the house. Maybe it was because it was Christmas and we were on honeymoon. Maybe she was just very sweet. Maybe both! Dinner was wonderful. Experimental dishes like Lamb 3 Ways were novel- pour the "shot" over the lamb though. Don't take it as a shot :). Lamb ordered by my husband was very juicy and seasoned nicely. I don't even eat lamb but had to try it. I got the chicken. Seemingly standard but it was the most tender piece I had thus far in NZ. The presentation was colorful and the vegetables were marinated and flavorful. Portions for both were huge. The chefs clearly care about food quality, even with the skeleton crew the hotel had over Xmas. If we had room, we would have tried the profiteroles...

Yelp
Came here with a group of 13 and I stayed three nights. Each room had a kitchenette and ours had a lovely Jacuzzi. The location is amazing; access to so many beautiful parks and landmarks in beautiful Christchurch. The staff was extraordinarily helpful, kind and cheerful. The breakfast was especially delicious. Good strong coffee, lovely pastries and elegant fruit offerings. The staff was extraordinarily helpful, kind and cheerful. I asked for special treatment numerous times and got it. I'm looking forward to coming back in a month.

Yelp
After looking through Travelbug my wife and I found a great sounding place. We called Pavilions and asked about one of their Superior rooms. Was asked how much it said on the website and was upgraded to the Executive Spa room for that price. So far, so good. We collected our key and found our room. First thing we noticed was the 1cm gap between the room's doors, you could feel the draft unless curtains were closed. The "heat pump" as called on the information about the room was actually just a small, budget wall heater. The spa is far too small for more than one small person and seemingly out of the 80's. As with every other appliance in the room (microwave, fridge, stove top). The TV when you enter is advertising as soon as you turn the electricity on. Which we listened to (unfortunately, average considering price!) to be blasted with more advertising about a book the owner had written. 3/10 after spending $185.

Yelp
We rented a 2 bedroom suite. Comfortable and clean, perfect for our family of 4. Good restaurants within walking distance.
