Paynes Bay Beach
We stayed in Speightstown and approached our first trip to Paynes Bay Beach with some trepidation having read about difficulty in parking, awkward access and being busy. And also having been spoilt by Miami Beach in Oistins where we stayed for our first week on the island.
None of our fears were justified – Paynes Bay Beach is lovely, quiet, beautiful, peaceful and easy to get to. No seaweed or rubbish – just clean pristine sand.
We parked opposite One Sandy Lane easily several times. There’s plenty of space on the inland verge next to a bus stop, some waste ground directly opposite the gates on the other side of the bus stop and three spaces at the entrance to the beach on the north side of the property. We had parking at Holders Lane up our sleeves (in addition to using the ZR/reggae buses), but we didn’t need it in four visits.
There are several walkways through to the beach from the road. We used the walkway about 50 yards/metres south of One Sandy Lane – the one to the north with the small parking area wasn’t always accessible because of the tide.
[NB despite the popular view and a few tours stopping outside, One Sandy Lane is not owned by Rhianna – the owner is a businessman with connections to Sheraton Hotels].
There are sunbeds and umbrellas along most of the beach, single or double rows but not crowded. Most belong to beach side accommodation. But there are three public rental spots – Jerry’s at the north end, which we used (Bd$50), one about 150 yards/metres further down where there is a small beach bar/café which has a toilet/bathroom (Bd$2 charge) and one in the middle just past the concrete water channel. They were never crowded and sunbeds were always available.
During our four visits only two vendors came by and they just walked past us!
There’s an array of yachts and catamarans sailing past on the horizon during the middle of the day, which adds a bit of interest. A few come in and anchor for their passengers to have a swim – it’s a bit of fun watching the passengers with swimming aids trying to get onto the beach! The Tiami was noisy, so I left a 1 star Google review!
The water is clean and warm. There are a few pebbles and a sloping shelf to access the sea – but that’s not a problem.
