12 Bars and Restaurants With Music on the Menu

"The Peace Hotel is, alone, worth a visit. The historic art-deco behemoth is a centerpiece of Shanghai’s picturesque riverside Bund area. The hotel bar’s house band is just the cherry on top: The primarily octogenarian “Old Jazz Band” is likely the oldest living and longest-performing musical group alive today. The bar and its band are an encapsulation of a pivotal era in Shanghainese history. The arrival of jazz in the 1920s brought about an embracing of Western culture throughout the city known as the “Paris of the Orient”: Men began wearing suits, ties, and mechanical watches, and gelling their hair, while women assumed tight-fitting cheongsams with high heels. The band’s repertoire of mostly nostalgic tunes from the ’20s and ’30s is an homage to a bygone era that birthed what’s known as “Shanghai style,” a singular blend of East meets West, old meets new. Several musicians can likely attest firsthand to the period’s pathos; the “younger” of the bunch can recall practicing their forbidden instruments in secret during the Cultural Revolution of the ’60s. At any rate, the “Old Jazz Band” that began playing here in 1980 is the same one that plays today. The average age of the house musicians is currently 82, a number offset by the rotating, often younger “sultry female vocalist” (according to the hotel website) who joins the band at 9:00 p.m. each night. That the bar itself was originally an English-style pub is evidenced in its darker features, from the bar stools to the wooden tabletops, suited to an ambience of weighty refinement persistent throughout the hotel. Photos of famous politicians visiting the legendary bar line the walls, including Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. Bill Clinton (did you know he played saxophone?) once famously joined the band for a stand-in solo. While the bar is open to the public, care is taken to evoke a sense of exclusivity. Returning guests’ preferred food and drink order, as well as their table and cigar selection, are memorized by staff. A menu of snacks accompanies a cocktail list inspired by those of the ’20s. Grab a martini and french fries and enjoy this living slice of Shanghai history. The band goes on each night at 6:30 p.m. If the charm brings you to tears, it’s dark enough that no one will notice." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Instantly travelled back to the golden era of Shanghai. Very cool performance done by Shanghainese native. Wish I could bring my late dad here.

Interesting spot to enjoy the famous legendary Jazz band in crowd Shanghai. Stunning and fancy place and great Jazz performance from known veteran Old Shanghai musicians. Really enjoyed and satisfied the performance 🤩 Bit overpricey for entrance fee 350RMB and the drinks just standard.

I wouldn't call this one Jazz, there is minimum guarantee 350Y per person. I kinda understand why because I wanted to leave since the band came up!!! if you like free flow improvising jazz DON'T COME here. It's more like Music Band with Saxophone and brass the rest is no Jazz at all. I might not research good enough but come on, what kinda Jazz if you only follow sheets and play famous pop songs??

We had a great time knowing that it was significantly over priced at 350 RMB minimum charge per person. We spent less than the minimum so even with the 10% surcharge we still kept it at 700 total. Drinks are very overpriced- for example the smallest whiskey pour I’ve ever had was 118 RMB and beer (296 ml) was 88. However if you go there for the entertainment and nostalgia it was fun and worth going. The halls and lobby in the Peace Hotel are beautiful. The band was slow as some say but still enjoyable. All this info is just to help you have advanced information. I would still recommend you go. We made a reservation with the concierge on the same day. We were not staying at the hotel if that matters (I think you get slightly better seats but our seats were fine). The loud Americans behind us were annoying though playing drinking games (we are American)).

Wonderful old style jazz club, sending back to the '30s-'40s in the old Shanghai Pudong district, near several masonry buildings of the Elizabeth time. Painted glass decorations and fine boiserie are part of the european '30s atmosphere. Impeccable table service, high class, with much care of the customers. Some decent and eatable food before the show. Quite large variety of drink and cocktails, including wine. Cost of the evening, music included, little food and wine, 2 people served st the table, about 100,00 €. Music? Better to forget it. Real far from any pale idea of jazz music. Starting with the typical entrance march of clowns at the circus, and continuing with mazurka, rythmic valtz, and similar pot-pourri without a even a faible link with "Jazz". Nice and high class local, but a very, enormous disappointment about the low and power quality of the music entertainment.

Interesting place to chill after walking down the super crowded riverside. Drinks and snacks were on the higher end but taking in the consideration of the bar/hotel location, it is still reasonable. The band played some familiar and popular songs.

One of the oldest jazz bars in town with a record holding oldest average age jazz band. Despite their age, the band is still lively playing the classics. Minimum charges apply for entry.

I can't believe the changes! It used to be one of my favorite spot to bring my foreign friends to enjoy the OLD shanghai but this time round, I am more than greatly disappointed and actually alittle piss off! They started now with a minimum charge of 350 RmB per head (which is not cheap for local standard) and on Top of that of want the singer to sing, you have to pay additional 100 rmb. This is total rip off! Also the band today is no longer playing with Pride like those days and the singer was totally sloppy! She sang with no feel, no mood and dragging her voice. I couldn't stay longer and just leave the place. This is no longer the place that I ever want to bring my friends to and is indeed a disappointment that Shanghai has lost another interesting place.
