Peachoid

We wanted to take a photo of the Peachoid for a friend and was surprised to see there was a public park surrounding it. Very small parking space out front but the park is fully fenced and has 2 picnic tables inside. Happy we stopped by! Our dogs were happy to get lots of sniffs in.

There is only one thing your mind goes to when you see the massive water tower….that looks like a butt. It’s ok, you are not alone. Take lunch and enjoy while sitting at the park table and benches. let your dogs enjoy a good run. There is a huge fenced in area. Read the signs taking in the story of how this beautiful fruit tribute came to be. It’s a great stop to take a breather and think about “James and the Giant Peach”!

Cutest water tower ever!! Just an FYI, small "parking area", just enough to turn your vehicle around. It's not set up as a tourist attraction, it is a water tower after all. 😊

It’s real, and it’s spectacular. Also, you can park and go in to large fenced area before 5 pm and the dogs loved it for a run around! Millwood Park.

Awesome landmark! So cool to see it every time I head north or south on I-85. For closer looks there is parking.

When in Gaffney you need to stop! Haha Not sure why you'd wanna stop and look, but you do! Its fun to see it in the horizon while coming down 85.

The Peachoid is one of those super cool roadside attractions that we just love to stop at. Always a great spot for a selfie to document our trip. They have paved parking and the grounds are very well kept. This is a great example of making something necessary, like a one million gallon water tower, into an attraction.

The peachoid is a sight to see indeed! Right off highway 85, you can catch some great glimpses of this SC treasure. You can pull off and do a quick drop, there are no fees or lines. Be sure to pay attention to the road as it's in a construction zone and SC drivers are bananas.. P.s. This peach needs to see a proctologist. #iykyk

The Peachoid is a water tower in Gaffney, South Carolina. It's 135 feet high and has one million U.S. gallons of water! People call if "The Peach." It's around exits 90 and 92 off I-85.

I was clued in somewhat wryly by a Gaffney native that this is the thing to see in the area. It is indeed a water tower that looks like a peach. Given the way it's angled, the leaf at the top is hard to see, and from the angles you'd likely be looking at it from, you might think it looks like something other than a peach. There is a restaurant next door which as of this writing is defunct. There's not much else nearby, but the couple of parking spots and small park set up around the peachoid make it clear that it's here to be visited. There are a few fruit trees, including some peaches, though the fruit appeared to have a high rate of getting hit by various blights. Natural part of a tropical climate I guess, but not an inspiring sight.

Yes; there it is and it's not your imagination playing tricks on you! It's in reality a water tank that resembles the Jolly Green Giant's rear end after a severe spanking! I remember when the Gaffney Board of Works built this thing. I was quite amazed initially, but that soon wore off. Now I ride by the Giant Peach and it doesn't cross my mind at all. I'm pleased that travelers from near and far get enjoyment by looking at this water tank. Welcome to Gaffney, S.C. !

You can easily spot the giant peach from I85 . According to official literature, the giant peach boldly "sets the record straight about which state is the biggest peach producer in the South. Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT Georgia." We wanted a closer look so we drove the frontage road to get a closer peek of this derrière resembling peach . As of July 2022 there's a fence around the peach perimeter so you can't walk on the property it sits on . You can pull behind the current Fatz cafe that sits beside it to snap some selfies. If viewing this giant peach makes you wanna take a bite out of one stop by the Abbott Farms store that you'll pass on the way to the giant peach . They have fresh peaches and other local goodies .

Since 1999, I've driven past the Peachoid water tower countless times while on I-85. Born and raised in High Point, North Carolina (where my parents still live), gone off to college at Georgia Tech and settled in Atlanta for 20 years, and now living in both Atlanta and the NC Triangle, the Peachoid symbolizes a few things to me: 1. If heading northbound, it's time to stop for gas at the QuikTrip at exit 90 in Gaffney: https://www.yelp.com/biz/quiktrip-gaffney. 2. Regardless which direction I'm headed, it's time to stop for peaches and say hi to peach-seller Gideon at nearby Abbott Farms: https://www.yelp.com/biz/abbott-farms-gaffney. There are multiple Abbott Farms peach stands. This one is located just down the road from the Peachoid on Peachoid Road. Their peaches - yellow, white, freestone, not freestone - are the best. 3. If heading northbound, I'm deep into my drive and almost in North Carolina. The Peachoid is almost a three-hour drive from Atlanta. 4. If I'm heading southbound, I've made solid progress. The Peachoid is about a two-hour drive from High Point and a three-hour drive from Chapel Hill. Between Atlanta and the Triangle, which is an approximately 380-mile drive that takes around six hours, the Peachoid is the only major man-made landmark that I can think of. It's significant in this regard. Aside from rivers here and there, Lake Hartwell, on the Georgia-South Carolina border, is the only other sort of "landmark" I can think of on the I-85 corridor from Georgia to North Carolina. The Peachoid is fenced in, but you can still pull into its small driveway and tiny gravel parking lot if you want to get out of your car and take pictures of/with it. Landmark of landmarks, here's what looks like a big butt crack and then as you get closer, ah! It's a peach! Yes, this water tower along I-85 in Gaffney SC is near the outlet mall but it's also near some peach stands and outlets for peach stuff. And yes, I know of at least one other water tower that has been made to look like something else. There's one near where the Charlotte Knights used to play in Fort Mill that has been painted to look like a baseball, stitches and all.

No butts about it, this is one amazing landmark! Yes, it is a water tower, but a directional guide for all around or traveling through. Growing up in Charlotte, NC, before 74 was punched through going from I-85 to 26, the quickest way to the mountains of North Carolina was to meet 11 off I-85 in Gaffney to cut over to 26. Well, and for the peaches to take to my maternal grandparents summer house west of Ashville. And the stop at Cowpen's Battlefield. Anyway, this was one of the landmarks my parents would have us look for. I realize that this is dating me quite a bit. But, I get a thrill every time I drive up to my parents house in Charlotte and still see this. It is truly a favorite of mine, and I love that it still exists. This stretch of I-85 can be kind of boring. You are not in the bumper to bumper traffic of Atlanta, and not in the endless construction of Charlotte highways. If you are heading south, it will be on your right. Heading north, it will be on your left (obviously). There is not much else to say, but I am getting nostalgic for a past that has gone by, and grateful for this walk down memory lane. Thanks for reading this (if you did at all). I love you Peachoid.

Is this thing even approachable? We stopped by to check it out there's like a 3 acre radius fence around the entire thing. Kind of a bummer you can't get close to it. Cool water tower tho

Lived here for nearly 60 years. It's just a water tower painted like a big peach. Nothing to see, really. Used to be a good restaurant beside it. It is no longer in business. View from Interstate 85 and keep rolling down the highway.

The Peachiod, as seen in the Netflix original series " House of Cards." The Peachiod is a tourist attraction/water tower located in Gaffney SC off interstate 85. The area around the Peachiod is well kept and there is plenty of near by parking. There is a picnic area or just pop into the The Fatz restaurant, located conveniently within the shadow of SC world famous Peachiod. A must see if your in the area and drop by one of the several local peach stands for a bussel of SC delicious peaches. Note, almost all if the stands are closed on Sunday.

So, I hate to admit I didn't just stumble across the Peachoid while travelling along I-85, no I actually sought this thing out after visiting the Cowpens battlefield west of Gaffney. I checked Yelp for local things to do, and somehow this made the top of the list (that should tell you something about the area). This peach was surprisingly hard to find. Sure, we could see it peeking out from behind the trees from a good distance away, but we just couldn't figure out how to get there. Finally I set my map location to the FATZ restaurant next door (oh, that name...) and we were able to find it. I parked in the FATZ parking lot and tried to get my 3 kids out of the car to explore the peach. My 13-year-old daughter hid in the back seat the whole time out of pure shame at her nerdy family. So, the trip wasn't a total waste. We got some great pictures. It was good for a laugh and definitely something you don't see everyday (unless I suppose you commute past here...)

Oh, magnificent Peachoid! This water tower is hard to miss. Haven't ever really stopped to take an extremely good look, but there is plenty to see just from the interstate. Makes for a really nice landmark as well and probably the most unique water tower I've ever seen. With that it's a very well done sculpted water tower peach. 5/5!

Sad that me, a non-gaffnian to be the first to review this beauty place. The peach is A LOT bigger and juicier than you imagine. Ever picnic-ed under a giant peach? One of the best picnics ive had, and i am a picnic expert! Esp. with friends you love and can be silly with! *************************************************************************** good times. If I could, I would return here every summer, when it is blazing hot, after picking some fresh peaches at a nearby farm. It is peaceful and quiet, something we dont have in SF.

Well...Yep. Just like others have mentioned. It's a magnificently huge ass, disguised as a water tower...disguised as a peach (or the other way around) taking up most of your view in Gaffney. I'm sure it has many utilitarian uses for the community, but to the lay person or regular commuter, it's just a huge ass you can see for miles on a day with decent visibility.

When you're driving 6 hours solid on I-85, the Peachoid Water Tower is a welcome distraction, even if only for a moment. When driving on 85 south, the huge orange peach peeks out from behind the trees before you see it in its full glory; making for an excellent snapshot if you're not driving.

Look! Up in the sky! It's an a$$! It's a peach! It's a big a$$ peach!! If you've driven down 85 into SC, you've seen it. The Peachoid is a pretty cool landmark, although I'm sure it's been the butt of many jokes. For me, it means you're close to the Outlet Center at Gaffney and you've entered the land of Peaches, Cheap Gas and Hardcore Fireworks! For some reason I feel like saying "Yee Haw!".

Most water towers are blah, not marked and boring. This one isn't. My kids say it looks like a huge butt in the air. Years ago back in the 80's there were a lot of peach trees nearby to continue the theme but sadly now there's nothing but a flea market. Anyway while you're driving by you can stop in the FATZ Café parking lot for an up close and personal view.

The Great State of South Carolina. First in giant novelty peaches, last in education. I can't help but marvel at a community that would hoist this monstrosity while society crumbled around it. That takes a special kind of vision. Every time I pass this landmark, I think of T. S. Eliot and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. With his crippling insecurities but utter devotion to appearance, I think the protagonist speaks to the monument in more than one way. I particularly like to think about Eliot's use of the peach as a juicy, sexual metaphor and Prufrock's fear of it dripping down his chin. I don't think the Peachoid's architects expected me to view their construction as a giant metaphorical vagina, but there you have it.

Legendary local landmark leaves little to the imagination. It's a huge peach on the side of a busy interstate highway. South Carolina peaches are sweet and they grow a lot of them. They are not Georgia peaches but they are pretty good. Be sure to point it out to the kids.

This water tower is OK kind of thing. It looks like a big peach and it all so to look like a big butt. There's a fence around it so you can't really climb the tower anymore.

Its a big butt in the sky with a huge FATZ sign right before it. On those 4 hour drives from Charlotte to Atlanta, its nice to have a little chuckle.

Let's be fair, there's absolutely nothing wrong with this peach as a peach. Sure it can occasionally look like a large butt mooning passers on the freeway, but come on, it's a big fruit with a split in the middle, what exactly do they think it should look like. While I can't say that there's a lot to do around it or under it (unless you count FATZ or the Prime Outlet Mall), it's certainly a site to behold if you have to pass though the area.

I accidentally stumbled on this while I was driving to Cow Pens National Battlefield. Having watched some House of Cards episodes though, when I saw this thing I knew I had to stop...The Peachoid is REAL!!! The Yelper who left the tip about driving to the Fatz on Peachoid Rd was quite helpful because I was wondering where I might be able to walk around some and get a good shot of this marvel. This was a great way to end my first day in this area and left me feeling what a peachy day it was even though I had to wake up at 4:30 AM to catch a flight out here.

The Gaffney Peach, AKA the Moon over Gaffney, is a very cool landmark that you'll see driving on 85. It's definitely a neat site and worth taking a few pictures of if you've never seen it before. A year or two ago you could get out and walk around the property a bit more, even picnic in the immediate vicinity, but recently a large fence was constructed around the base after the most recent remodeling. Now it's less of a place to get out and visit and more of a site to see. The surrounding area does have some great fruit markets with ice cream, candies, and interesting sodas, and some great local barbecue restaurants.

I read about the Peachoid before the fact & shared the knowledge with my family. When they saw the Peachoid in person, they just giggled. It does in fact look like a butt. We now call it the Giant Peach Butt. :) Nothing special here but worth a picture of a roadside America attraction.

The peach looks great. It's a water tower shaped like a PEACH. People are going to be impressed no matter what so can y'all stop painting it all the time please

Been there twice, the second being a drive-by during the day on I-85. The first was at night, and I was pretty annoyed that we had been delayed by traffic so that we arrived after dark. However, know that this is very well lit, and standing in the parking lot underneath it in the illuminated darkness gives it a very cool look that you will be glad you stopped for. Interestingly, there was a restaurant right underneath the Peachoid that seemed to be out of business at our 5/2017 visit - I should think that would be a location where it would be pretty easy to do well if the food and service are any good.

Yup. It's a peach colored ass. If you are driving on I-85, you can't miss it. It makes me smile every time.

The peachoid in my opinion looks the best it ever has. Being born in Gaffney but growing up in Florida and traveling back and forth to visit family over the years as young children it was our landmark to know we finally arrived. Even if we were asleep it was a must to wake up to see the gigantic peach. We had our reunion there his past weekend and it was a must before I left for my flight out of Charlotte to drive by and snap a few pics. I must say with the new makeover it looks the best I've ever seen it.

I passed by the Peachoid on my way to Atlanta without realizing it was along the way. After watching House of Cards on Netflix, I was thrilled to see the Peachoid in person. If you're a fan of the series, I'd highly recommend driving through Gaffney for a pit-stop and trying to snag a photo of the tower. It actually looks pretty cool in person, and it's fun to see the reference first hand.

The Peachoid is fabulous. What's not fabulous is the Fatz restaurant sign right beside it. Boycott the Fatz, let's clear the sky for the Peachoid!

This water tower is huge. Made me a little nervous that it was close to the apartments around the area. I got over it quickly though.

It was worth the stop! Not much of my friends can say they have been to the Peachoid! Highly suggest spending at least 20 minutes walking around and reading the plaques!

I am a NC native and I remember when the tower was built. As they were painting it...the first coat was flesh colored..it indeed did look like a giant butt (especially with that little mark at the end looking like a tiny turd). We, as kids, used to laugh and laugh and laugh at it. At the time, we had no idea what it was going to be because they didn't have the leaf on it or anything. So, to this day, I remember riding to Gaffney to shop at the stores and just giggling in the back of the station wagon with my sister at this Peach. Good times. (I do miss the actual peach trees that used to surround it, though).

That is pure and simple Gaffney. You go for the peach, shopping at the big yellow mall, and beauty contests.

You've gotta love the Peachoid. It's an icon, a landmark, and a work of art.

That was a fun project in days gone by. I assisted Peter paint the darn thing. Scary fun.
