The ride over is a nice adventure and only takes 15 minutes. The Casco Ferry Line is really well run and the terminal is spanking clean. The ferry's do leave right on time (if not a minute or two early by my watch) so don't be late.
I would love to be able to live here in the summer as it offers a mellow laid back kind of lifestyle. As a tourist visiting for the first time, however, I was a little surprised at how not tourist friendly the island is. There is only one public restroom under the stairs of the parking lot and it is not in great shape. There was no way to dry your hands after washing them, and I cannot imagine how this one bathroom serves the public in the summer. Meanwhile, right across the parking lot, is a big gorgeous building that houses the water company. Really?? I would think that someone would have thought to put in a public area with bathrooms and showers (unless of course they don't actually want tourists coming over to the island, which is a really possibility) rather than using it for the public works.
Okay, so we got off the ferry and followed a herd of people to a beach a few minutes walk away. It is a lovely little beach, although I cannot imagine what it looks like in season or how it accommodates the public. Again, there is no bathroom anywhere near the beach, so I'm guessing people make do, which is a disgusting thought.
There are a couple of restaurants, an ice cream shop, a bike rental (which is so cool as it is an honor system this time of year and you can take a bike and leave money in the till.) There is also a reasonable golf cart rental. The island tour looks great so might do that next time.
We actually stumbled on the library and talked to one of the librarians who told us to buy sandwiches at the grocery store and walk to a nearby stretch of beach. It was a fun way of seeing the island. We ended up back at the ice cream shop and at a soft serve as we waited for the ferry ride back. As we were sitting in the chair with two toddler children, a pickup truck came rolling onto the sidewalk. Apparently one of the locals delivers packages and feels it's fine to drive his truck right up to the front of the building with no regard for pedestrian safety. As I was walking back from the bathroom, a large dog came barreling down the hill at me. When I asked the owner to call his dog, he snottily said, "he's just running to the beach." I then pointed to the HUGE sign that says, "keep animals leashed at all times." Apparently there are not actual police anywhere around as the locals think they can do whatever they want without consequence.
All in all, this is a place worth visiting. I do have to say that while some of the locals were friendly, as anywhere, some were a bit crabby and curt. Not everyone is super-friendly and happy to see the tourists piling off the ferry, although I would think the ferry would not exist without the tourist trade.
